Col. Francis Gabreski,Co.of the 61St. FS/56Th.FG. Halesworth,England, Mid 1944. Francis S.Gabreski was not a Polish pilot, he was born American, but from Polish parents. He flew with 315th FS (Polish) as a transfer pilot from 56th FG, because he spoke Polish and he could therefore learn from these pilots who were fighting from the outbreak of the war. Schilling was Commander of the 56th FG at this time. The 'bubble top' Thunderbolts offered excellent vision during combat. All Schilling's Thunderbolts carried illustrations of 'Hairless Joe', a character from AI Capp's Dogpatch cartoon strip. This fighter displayed 14 'kill' marks under the cockpit of his total of 22.5 victories Schilling's 'Jug' was camouflaged in a shadow-shade scheme used by the USAAF in England. The colors were 42 Medium Green (FS34092) and Ocean Grey (FS36152) upper surfaces over Medium Sea Grey (FS36270) under surfaces.
