MacRobertson Air Race 1934 - 2014 80 Years of Racing Legends!
In late October 1934 the world focused its attention on a dramatic feat of aerial adventure. Accepting the MacRobertson challenge, the best aviators from around the world gathered to race from London to Melbourne. They were competing in the best aircraft that they could muster to fly halfway around the earth. Their progress was covered by newspaper and radio for a global audience and wherever the competitors landed they were greeted by huge crowds. The whole world was watching.
We here wish to commemorate that event. We recreate both the competition of racing long distances as well as the sense of adventure that characterized aviation in the Golden Age. Flying was fraught with danger, especially flying through strange territory and over vast distances. In this event, we fly over towering Alps, the temples of ancient Greece, the desolate Syrian deserts, the searing heat of the Persian Gulf, the tiger-infested jungles of India, the mile-high monsoons of the Bay of Bengal, the smoldering volcanoes of the Netherlands Indies, the mysterious Timor Sea, and then the tropical rain forests and barren Outback of the Australian subcontinent. This is not a pylon race around a local airport. (For more on the event and the route, see the Historical Notes accompanying this document.)
The nature of this event means that we emphasize the spirit of aviation's Golden Age when flying was a matter of technical invention, piloting skill, and raw personal courage. Let's have some fun.~MM
