  2. Graphics help!

Seems like a lot of people are having trouble with graphics now days. I have beat my head against the wall but nothing seems to help. FSX fires up ok and scenery and aircraft are fine. Within 5 mins or so, aircraft lose their textures (may or may not come back after 5 mins or so) and the ground looks like pea soup. In addition, ramps at the airports don't show up but the parking spaces are a putrid lime green. Lights are nothing but black squares. I have cleaned the insides of the computer because I thought it sounded like overheating - no go. I have a E8500 3.2 with a 9800gt graphics card. 4 megs memory. Nvida driver 7.15.11.8250 and nhancer 2.5.9. Set everything up according to Nick C's instructions (thank you again Nick). Have rex gex utx and trafficx (which I also can't get to work) Any help would be greatly appreciated Bob

  3. So you want a MAC that flies FSX like a dream come true-build a Hackintosh!

Build an Intel and load Snow Leopard on it for MAC and dual boot for Win7 to run FSX! $750 I just did this for a friend: Using a Gigabyte EP45-UD3P motherboard, 4GB G.Skill PC2 9600 stable at 1290 mhz, a Q9650 CPU stable at 4.0 on air, combined with an MSI N260GTX OC 655mhz. It runs FSX at no less than 22fps anywhere and as high 80fps in places UNLOCKED! All sliders right except autogen at Normal! Awesome graphics. Very fluid and makes for a VERY VERY Fast MAC PRO Quad! Benchmarks beat MAC PRO Quad Core to death all for less than $750 as opposed to MAC's ridiculous $2499.00! One 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon “Nehalem” processor 1TB

  4. The next steps

I'm contemplating what to upgrade in order to get acceptable performance over dense city areas like LondonX and ManhattenX and also to get rid of the blurries on my photoscenery. My current setup is a Dell XPS system with a Q6600 @2.4ghz, 4gb RAM, W7 Ultimate 32-bit, one 300gb and one 1TB drives and a 8600GT graphics card, ThemalTake 750W PSU. I get a pretty solid 18fps (limited) in most places with just about any aircraft, except in really dense scenery areas. I'd like to be able to run the PMDG 747 out of Heathrow or just go near London in anything more than the default Cessna! One option is to drop a tonne of money on a system that I feel would definitely meet my needs now and in the foreseeable future, but as I mostly flight sim it's hard to justify. That machine would be an i7-980X, 24gb RAM, GTX480 and a Velociraptor RAID array. The other more attractive option is to just add to what I have.

  5. Which add-ons go on which drive ?

I've been asking this on a couple of flight sim forums, and no doubt there is a wealth of expertise and experience here too... I'm about to do a complete reinstallation of FSX and all the associated scenery add-ons. I have a dedicated drive for FSX, D: ( a 300GB Velociraptor ) in addition to my normal 600GB OS drive C: My question is...should I put my scenery add-ons on the FSX D: drive, or can they go on C: without any framerate / loading time impact on FSX ? Here's the scenery add-ons I have: Horizonsim Generation X Version 2 VFR Photographic Scenery

  9. Define "too tight"?

Quick background and then a "simple" question. Bought a new cpu and motherboard; i7 930 and an EVGA X58 3x SLI. Also got a three pack of DDR3 ram. Mobo would not boot with the ram fully populated and yes, they were in the correct slots. Each ram module tests fine under Microsoft's memory tester. Flashed the BIOS a couple of times and got a system that now runs, but only showing 4gb out of 6gb. Many posts at EVGA forum with same problem. Some solutions proposed are that the third-party cooler, a Cooler Master V8 in my case, might be the cause of the CPU not seating perfectly and the pins not being perfectly aligned. Also proposed is to loosen the retaining brackets on the backside of the mobo, as they could be too tight thus causing the pin alignment problem mentioned above. So as I prepare to tear the computer apart one more time and as I contemplate trying the stock Intel CPU cooler on the motherboard I am left to wonder and ask, just how tight should the retaining brackets be when reassembling? Do I need a special torque wrench? I've never really seen anything that says tighten "x" amount. signed, Klueless in Kalifornia

  10. $500 computer -- what do you think of these components?

Any advice will be gratefully received. I had this in the shopping cart, and I was typing in my credit card info when I thought: "Better check with the ones who KNOW." My own build, described several weeks ago, is on hold for the time being, so I'm building this for someone else. In this price bracket, it's tempting to just get a Dell Inspiron or similar, but the recipient runs two monitors and that means adding a video card -- at which point, with the Inspirons, you may also need to get a new power supply. So, I'm going to build. Will purchase Windows 7 separately and use the Antec 450W power supply that was left over from my previous build two years ago (PSU came with my Sonata II case but I bought a larger power supply separately). Will also reuse keyboard, speakers, and mouse. Base: this isn't really a gaming rig, but to get started I used this recent article at Tom's Hardware, on building a $550 Gaming PC: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/cpu-gpu-overclock,2659.html. I opted for a different video card (see below), different DVD burner (based on my own experience with the last build; my pick was all of $1 more), and a larger hard drive. The RAM they recommended wasn't available at NewEgg, so I picked something else that got good reviews and was in my price range. Kept the case, mobo, and CPU the same. Goals: the user mainly uses office apps, the web, and streams video online. Some light gaming. This will be a big upgrade from the present machine, a six-year old Dell Inspiron. Should be much snappier and stream video much smoother.

  12. Another FSX build ~ $1500 (USD)

This is based on Ted's suggestions. I'm looking to build the first week of June, so some components will probably be more expensive, others less. Noteworthy changes: - Lian Li case: I want something quiet, but I'm not wedded to this model in particular. - Nvidia 260 instead of 275 or 285: I could go up on this if it makes a difference. Again, noise matters, which is why I selected the MSI "Frozer" that was discussed last week. - One Caviar Black hard drive instead of two: I'll be moving #2 from my current system

  13. What kind of Video card for FSX

At last I am going to upgrade to FSX but it's too much for my PC from the year 2005. So I have to upgrade the PC too. There is only one question (worth of money too) I don't know answer yet. What kind of Video card I should buy? I am not playing any other games but flight simulators, so there is no need for the best money can buy. My 4 years old video card runs CFS2, CFS3 and IL2 quite well and even FS2004 fairly well in this old computer. Only FSX is too much (for the computer and it's V. card). I wouldn't like to invest a lot of money for nothing (only FSX needs better card), but what kind of card would be good enough? Is there any sence in this Mr. Kok's article where he says that any ATI radeon 4650 level card is good enough for FSX? http://www.forum.aerosoft.com/index.php?showtopic=30796

  15. Will I ever be able to enjoy FSX with this computer?

After ruining my last computer trying to upgrade my CPU, I was afraid to try building a new one myself. Unfortunately, my budget is rather small. I was able to purchase a fairly decent computer, or at least I thought it was. It is a ASUS, I5 CPU 650 @ 3.2 Ghz, CG5275 Motherboard, Socket LGA 1156, 8 Gb RAM at 1333 Mhz, 400 watt power supply, and for now, only because I havent bought a new one yet, Nvidia 9500 GT 1 GB video card, Windows 7 64 bit. Right now, I am getting worse stutters in FSX than I have ever with any computer I have owned, and they were much slower computers. I only had the demo version, but I was able to run Rise of Flight smooth as silk, just like I can with CFS2 and FS9. I didn't have the sharpest textures, but the demo ran out before I could tweak it. I have tried all the tweaks, and have even crashed my system a few times, but no matter what, I cannot get rid of the stutters. The stutters are not micro stutters either, it actually stutters like a 'heart beat', and they are 'hard' stutters. And, my scenery settings are on medium low, and it still kicks it hard.

  17. My FSX has gone haywire

Hi all, hoping you can help me. I have reinstalled FSX and Acceleration. The first addon aircraft I reinstalled was the Aerosoft DiscusX (fully patched). However, I seem to have missing airports and my aircraft registers a crash or starts sliding over the ground moments after a mission or free flight starts. The aircraft seems to fall through the ground (I have collisions on). I tried the introductory soaring mission, I get the start of the "welcome to Minden this looks like a great soaring day" dialogue and I get a crash detection and the mission immediately restarts for the same result. Instead of being on the active at Minden, the first thing I see before the aircraft "crashes" and puts me in outside view, is I'm in the desert - no runway textures or buildings - it's like I'm sitting on the ground in the middle of nowhere. I started the Swedish soaring mission, the glider started in the air, but immediately performed most of a loop and then was impossible to control with my X52. I tried the very first takeoff mission in the ultralight and same thing, it immediately "crashes" and I see it sunk into the ground. Anyone seen this sort of behaviour before and can give me a tip as to what's going wrong and how to fix it please?

  20. What FSX PC would you get for around $2000?

Hi all, I need your help on a hardware decision, because this is not my strong side when it comes to FSX setup. I am going to replace my old Core 2 Duo 6700 soon and have a budget of around $2000 for my new PC. Not only playing with it though. I will use it for modelling, animation, rendering, programming etc. as well. I would like to get a PC, which runs FSX smoothly >25 frames at high to very high graphics settings. Usually, I am more a bush flyer using Togass Fjords X, soon Pacific Northwest, Holger Sandmann's Vancouver and so on. Also I'd like to see some traffic (75%) while I am flying and REX is a future must have for me as well. Would be great if the setup can keep up the frame rate at bigger cities like Vancouver too. Can you give me some advice for a high end PC, especially in the areas of - CPU (would like to get a i7) - Memory (with 4-6 GB) - Graphics Card (>= 1024 Mb) - Harddisc (>= 500 GB)

  21. Angry New Rig for FSX.

Hello Fellow FSXers, I have a new rig being delivered tomorrow. My current computer is Windows XP SP2 32-bit , my new one will be Windows 7. I would like to transfer over my add-ons, free and bought. Can I do it with a transfer cable, or do I have to re-load everything ? I had my old rig tweaked as much as possible, and it has to much family stuff on it. The new one is all mine, and I cannot wait to see FSX in action the way it should be. Any insight would be welcome. Thanks, and Happy Flyin! Here are my new specs: OEM INTEL i7-930 2.80GHZ 8M LGA 1366 , EXTREME OVERCLOCK (20% MORE) 2TB SATA-II 3.0GB/S 32MB CACHE 7200RP

  23. Scenery config files

Can someone give me a little insight on the FSX Scenery.cfg file. I find there are two of them on my system. One in the default fsx folder, and another in the Program data/microsoft/FSX folder. A couple of questions: Are both supposed to be there? If I delet them will FSX rebuild one? What brought this up to cenrter stage is the FSX load time. It's approaching six minutes. Just seems a tad long. Systems specs Intel Corporation DG43NB AAE34877-402 3.15 gigahertz Intel Core2 Duo 3068 Mg Memory
