View Full Version : US-Bases on Emiraua Island 1944

Hello everyone,

after I found the superb scenery made the Solomon Islands by Marc, I have decided to complement this towards the north-west. Around 220 Milen northwest of Rabaul are the islands Emirau, Eloaua and Mussau. 1944 they were conquered by the US armed forces and first applied to Emirau a large base. This was 2 runways, as well as a port. Below were built on Eloaua and Mussau small alternate airports.
Far from the capabilities of Marc, I have to now try to create these bases as a supplement. They reflect the state of the bases in the second half of 1944 and are equipped with an extensive AI traffic in the air and at sea.
Yet the whole is far from finished, but I would like to present this little project ever. I beg your indulgence for the quality, but I am an absolute beginner in scenery design. Bit by bit, these scenarios with now continue to grow and hopefully be even better.

Thank you very much for all your kind words.

Off course i use Marc's libraries. I think everyone who is interessted in using scenerys from WWII in the pacific will know Marc`s biutifull work. So his great libraries are installed on all users computer. But the real reason to use this stuff..... i`m not able to do such a good work.

At the next two photos you can see the location of the islands Emirau, Eloaua and Mussau. Emirau an Eloaua are activ airports today. On Emirau there is only one runway in use today for GA-Traffic. The runway on Mussau is out of duty.

Do you plan to include some grass or bushes as well ?

I did grass in just one place till now. Just want to look what will happen to the FPS. FSX is running on a laptop on my side... so i had to look after the FPS. Till now all is wonderfull. 3D Grass shurely will be one of the last things to do.

Till now i did some changes on landclasses on the islands so they show up more realistic. With google i found some helpfull links about the history this bases gone through. Some nice pictures in there.

Next steps will be the work on AI-traffic an some repaints for the planes that had been in use on these islands in 1944.

Step by step i will learn a little designe in gmax so that i could do things like runway, takiway and so on with new, more realistic, textures. Just know i do everything only with ADE 9x. i think the best way will be to update the scenery later with new things i learn.

But just now there is a lot to do till i will put the first step to Avsim.

I`ve decided to take the period of Nov 1944 to Feb 1945 for the bases. In this period there are Fighters from the RNZAF, an Bombers from US on that islands.

Fighters are the 19 th. squadron RNZAF with F4U Corsair and the 22 nd squadron RNZAF also with F4U Corsair.

US-Marine Corps is present with VMSB-243 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VMSB-243) operating SBDs (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_SBD_Dauntless) and the VMB-413 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VMB-413) and VMB-433 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VMB-433) operating the B-25 Mitchel.

First i did the 12 different repaints for the 19 th. squadron RNZAF. The others will follow. AI-flightplanes now represent this planes as you can see on the next pictures taken from FSX.

Klaus,

do you use the FSX default islands? Or did you trace the shorelines in SBX or Google Earth (can't really tell from the screenshots)?

I also can contribute a better set of palms, the ones I see were my first humble try in these horticultural enterprises and look a bit funny with their fat trunks. They also are a bit complex.
I made another version that can be deployed in hundreds over the airfields without a noticeable frame drop.

Hi,

yes till now i use the FSX default ilands. I only change the landclases. In my fsx these islands did not look like islands with jungle.
Marc... every help is welcome. So if i may use this new set of palms i would be very happy to do this. Your libarys are a fantastic work. Without them i couldn`t do such a project.

At this point i will show the next steps forword. Just make the next paints for the AI traffic and flightplans that operate this AI traffic. First there are 12 different paints for the 22nd RNZAF fighter spuadron.

And also did the vmb433 marine bombing squadron.

Hi to everyone,

just the time to tell something about the progress.

Till now all the AI traffic is done. All planes in use got their repaints and all flightplanes are done. Just the shiptraffic will get some little changes in the next time.

For the base itself there is a very big progress by some very welcome help from Marc. He offers the islands he madeto me, so i can use them for this project. At the same time he told me a very much needed pool of informations how to design scenerys. With all that help i startet to do things in SBuilderX by looking into the islands he made.
After some hours of trying i`m now able to change some things and i think i`m on the right way to use this programm to change a lot in the scenerys.

Frist i did the shoreline of the islands an also did a lot of changes in the landclases. So now the first beaches are ready. Some things on bases i had to replace, because Marc did a fantastic work for the islands from google. Their look is much more realistic now.

But have a look at yourself.

Next coming up is to do all the rest of changes on Emirau and then the other islands will follow. On the pictures you can see that there is much to do....

Thanks a lot again for the very big help i got from Marc. Some things would have taken a lot more of time if i had not gotten the big help and a lot of information from him. Thanks for all that.

Klaus,

I've been working on the B-25J glass and gun nose versions ever since you announced this scenery. Still a WIP as
I'm trying to dirty these birds up. If you have any info on Serial codes for both VMB 413 and 433 I can do full
squadron for both units and send to you to use with this package. You can PM me here if you want to use them.

This is just the glass nose and still a lot to do.

Thanks for that great offer joe. Fantiastic work you do there. Till know i wasn`t able to find the right model with glass nose, so i do every repaint to another later model without that nose.

Every information i get to both bomb squadron, i found on the following sides. There are a plenty of photograph in there that show the markings and numbers of some aircrafts.

Thanks Klaus,

I had already found those 2 sites, but the lack of more info on BuNo. for each aircraft makes it hard to do squadron strength.
The John Young (JYAI) B-25 AI package has the glass nose version in it. (model.1) The one you used for your paint is (model.2)
and lacks the top turret. There is another gun nose version in the package (model.8) that has the top turret but lacks the side
mounted guns. There is also a D model (model.6) that can be used for the PBJ-1D that these 2 squadrons shipped out with on
there way to the Pacific.

And now for the sad news....
I did what probably every one has done that uses photoshop or any other paint program, which is to save my paint and for
some reason flatten the image and click save again, then close out the file and lose all my layers. So all that work is now gone.:pop4:
The good news is I had saved an earlier version of the PSD file with most layers still there, (didn't know I did that) minus all my weathering that I did yesterday. The other good news is that it also had all my reworked panel line layers and another factory
fresh metal paint that I had did for another Pacific based USAAF bird + all my Doolittle Raiders paints. So I'm very happy that I
don't have to start that all over again.:encouragement:

And just a very little thing to come with. There is a little island about 40 miles east of Emirau, called Tench Island, that is not build in FSX. Today there are some houses and a little church.... nothing else. I think in 2nd WW there was nothing. But it`s a little nice place to go from Emirau (and just my route for the second carrier group comes to that island) so i decide to make it a little US base. Great work! I'm looking forward to this scenery for sure.

Hopefully at some point in the future, one or more of our great scenery designers will turn their attention to Wake Island and Midway Atoll, re-creating each location as they appeared at the onset of the war in the Pacific.

Yes they did. Did you install all the AI planes? Corsairs are in the folder : AI Planes and named : EDAviation AI Corsair F4U.
In the scenery the corsairs are placed in the south part of the airfield.

Also, just a question, I'm certainly not being picky; Is it Emirau Island or Emirua Island. I've also searched high and low in the SOH Warbirds FSX Addons/FSX Scenery library and can't seem to find either the v2 Solomon 1943 scenery or its update.

Klaus,

Superbly assembled PTO war environment - congratulations. Scenery mesh and textures all look right and good. Like the AI variety. Only small issue I had was the Hornet (?) cv model gives a building crash (not your fault) so I swapped it with a different WW II cv model of Colin's that now allows me to land my Corsair. I trap with crash detection "on." :untroubled:

I did not notice the problem with the Hornet... my crash detection is off. Bag your pardon for that.

The IJN is in the north-west of Emirau (not so far away.... but not visible when you start at the airbase :jump: ) So you have to search for it ;-)

I took my weapon armed Wildcat out hunting IJN today. a line of thunderstorms North and West of Emirau hampered my efforts. Anyone have better luck?

No! I had my tubby and reilable F4F out there too last night and nearly strafed my own side's ships thinking they were the enemy (NW of the island but close in)! No sign of them NW of the island about 50 miles out.

Military intelligenz gets a very urgent report from the route of that submarine..... don`t know how they manage it to get this information.... but hope they are right. Normaly their information are very good. So .... they send us this map with a sector to serch.

Got 'em!
After departing Emirau to the North, I joined up with the U.S.S. Hornet's tack force and brought my F6F-5 aboard to refuel and rearm.Of course I was flying VF-17s Hellcat #35 actually based aboard the Hornet.
After launching from the Hornet, I headed North at angels 5 and found the Japanese Submarine a short time later. I laid 2 500 pounders close aboard and finished her with a rocket run.
A quick return to the Hornet had me back aboard in time for dinner.
