View Full Version : The SAAB Viggen released!

JensOle
March 3rd, 2016, 09:55
Hi,

Henk recently made a FSX native conversion of the old Alphasim SAAB Viggen pack and that of course made me interested in completely remaking the textures (as the original looked rather dated). The Viggen really looks like a purpose build fighter and it was actually designed exactly into the Swedish defence plan of the mid cold war era as "the system 37".

All new HD textures with correct panel lines rivets, details, decals and stencils. The model has quite a few mapping issues, but I think it looks rather smart in the splinter camo after all.

I have always liked the Viggen, ever since I saw it at RAF Waddington's air show in the 90's where it did its landing, turn around mid runway and take off in the opposite direction.

Thanks Henk for doing this conversion to FSX native. Having a lot of fun with it. It's great to have the Alphasim Viggen back in FSX skies. Thank you too Jen for taking this further. Cant wait to see what version 2 looks like with those HD textures... they look superb.

SAAB AJSH-37 Viggen (37908) from Flygflottilj 15, coded 81, based at Søderhamn in the 1990's. This Viggen crashed on 6th October 1996 off the Latvian coast while photographing the new Russian cruiser "Peter the Great". While passing the cruiser at low level the pilot Kapten Göran Carlsson suddenly saw a Russian Be 12 directly in front of him and tried to awoid it by taking evassive action, sadly the aircraft impacted the water and Carlsson died instantly.

The DCS Viggen will be an interesting model for sure and it might make me test out DCS.

In the meantime we are making progress with the reworked Alphasim Viggen. Yes it is dated in some aspects, but I think we can make it more than flyable and actually quite enjoyable.

We have also solved how the canard flaps works and Henk has coded it into the model. The flaps are automatically actuated together with the landing gear and the pilot cannot himself control them. They go down with the gear and up when the gear is retracted. The AJ also have a preset trim on the flaps in accordance with the weight of the loaded stores. It was set by the crew chief and could not be changed by the pilot in flight.. I guess pilot was not supposed to drop any of the more valuable stores as tank, ECM pod etc..

Here's another one I've done using Jens-Ole's excellent HD paint kit. 37432 of F16 at Uppsala, painted blue and yellow for the 75th anniversary of the Swedish Air Force. Known as Petter Bla (Blue Peter)

And an updated version of one in the original pack - 37447 again from F16 at Uppsala,

Great work by Dave on the F16 Viggens!

Another slightly special scheme was this one from F13. The two tone grey scheme had been modified with ligh grey tail with a medium grey fading at the bottom and the wing badge has been oversprayed sort of inspired by a combination of the F-16 Hill scheme and South African Cheetah schemes.

A quick update on the Viggen project. Henk has done some real magic to his old model with importing it into sketchup and managing to remap all the trouble areas. Many important texture areas were reappearing in several places, making it impossible to correctly paint details. Several parts were randomly mapped to another texture. All in all a painters nightmare. Henk has done an outstanding job with getting the mapping in order. Elevons, intake/fuselage, all weapon pylons and more are now correctly mapped and painted by me. Particular the weapon pylons stands out as major improvements.
Henk has also been busy with getting the M/70 rocket pod in correct shape and it is now also possible to load it to all 4 stations which it was cleared for. The same goes for Sidewinders and Skyflash for the Jakt Viggen.
This makeover has come a long way from a simply FSX conversion, and In my mind this is starting to become a very enjoyable modell

Dave Quincey has created the individual specular maps for the bare metal paints, including specular alpha's. The model does not use diffuse alpha. The Viggen bare metal looks rather matte like anodized aluminimum, it was never polished. I think Dave did capture the look of those bare metal Viggens in an excellent way.

The three of us have been working on this project for about 8 weeks now and it's nearing completion. We now have kind permission to use radar and multi-function gauges by Karol Chlebowski in our later JA panel so that should be available too. All the textures will be based on Jens-Ole's excellent 2048 x 2048 paint kit and will cover the whole spectrum of operational schemes worn by the Viggen, in both attack (AJ) and interceptor (JA) roles, together with authentic load-outs changeable by the payload. Here are few examples:

Well, if it is possible to allow for the use of Fresnel (affecting reflection) and diffuse alpha, you could achieve some very realistic results with the painted schemes. They do look fantastic already. Something to consider? Anyway. Not be the late comer to the party. It might not be practical at this point. Always like the Saab jets, nice to have someone paying this attention. Thank you! Dave & JensOle, your work is brilliant!

Another one from the soon to be released Viggen pack. Textures by Dave Q.

SAAB JA-37 Viggen 17-33 (37333) from Flygflottilj 17 based at Ronneby in 1983. This aircraft was delivered in bare metal finish from SAAB. The reason for many JA's being seen unpainted was that the Swedish air force tried to save money on not paying SAAB to paint the new aircraft, but rather paint them themselves during major servicing.

Great to hear that so many are looking forward to the release!

It has been the biggest transformation of an old FS model I have ever seen thanks to the joint effort of the team with Henk and Dave. Not only have most of the issues which ruined this model in FSX/P3D been fixed, but a lot of new features have been made to really make this model shine. Henk has really done some magic with the model. In the end it turned out to be a lot more than simply making the model FSX native.

This is one of "Top Five" airplanes I would LOVE to see MILVIZ do:

1. Martin B-57B/EB-57E
2. F-8E Crusader (RF-8A or G would be a bonus, but is likely too much to hope for)
3. Lockheed U-2C
4. Saab AJ/SJ-37 Viggen
5. Saab Grippen
6. Lockheed T-33A (the sixth is needed only if Vertigo doesn't finish theirs [and to me, it looks more and more doubtful as we hit the 4 or 5 year WIP point...would LOVE to be proven wrong on this point, however!!!])

Well, I just did my first flight in this update and WOW, what an amazing job you guys did! This has always been one of my all time favorite aircraft and the update you guys did makes it the same in the sim for me.

Now some statements and questions. First, the sound didn't work for me (In the JA-37), so I aliased it to the Aerosoft F-16, and those sounds work great with this bird. Second, will there be a paint kit? I would like to see it painted in the colors of some of the air forces they tried to sell it to, but didn't end up buying it, like Switzerland and India. I keep thinking of how cool it would look in some of those wacked out color schemes the Indians put on their MiG-27's. Third, does anybody know of a good tip vortex effect that shows strong rotation? I would like to add it to the canard for the high alpha regime.

Great work guys. BTW, I really like the moving map display as well. It came in handy when I was flying in a low cloud deck.

Also. Mods, shouldn't this get a sticky at the top since it was just released? :)

@ Sundog: Thanks for the kind words. We did not include a soundset, the sound.cfg file is aliased to the stock FSX Learjet. Having watched a couple of videos I find the Viggen engine sounds very much like the Harrier so I am using a Rolls Royce Pegasus soundset which was done by MSS for UKMIL iirc.

EDIT: By mistake, my test version of the sound.cfg file ended up in the release, the fix is easy though, you can edit the sound.cfg file with notepad:

Wrong release version:
[fltsim]
alias=.\Sound\RR_Pegasus
;alias=d:\fsx\simobjects\airplanes\Lear45\sound

Correction:
[fltsim]
alias=.\SimObjects\airplanes\Lear45\sound

or alias it to any soundset you like.

The paintkit is not made available as it is very big... The texture mapping is made in a way that the model is covered with many smaller textures and when they went up to 2048x the size of the paintfiles become very big... And I must confess they are a bit of a mess... I'll see what we can do.

The Viggen was one of the candidates to replace the F104 in the seventies, but the F16 was chosen instead. With all international mission I assume the choice for the Viggen would have caused a logistic disaster. But I really considered it a missed chance for the Royal Netherlands Air Force that they didn't choose to fly this Swedish beauty queen!

And Flyboy is correct, the model is available at Avsim and simviation.

Good to see the Viggen getting virtual flight time!

The same here in Norway, it was a contender for the F-5/F-104 replacement program together with the Mirage F1. The JA37 would have brought a more advanced interceptor capability with both radar link and BVR capability at a much earlier time frame compared to the F-16. The Jakt Viggen was pretty bad ass as an interceptor with both the radar and weapon capability it had from the late 1980's. The F-16 turned out to be an perfect fighter for the European partner nations, but it used almost 20 years to mature as a true BVR fighter. Of course the type of operations we have taken part in with the Americans have also played a part of showing how important it has been to fly a similar platform. Have said that there are some major differences between the early European F-16A and the later blocks of the C/D models which the USAF have been flying. Weapons wise the Viggen already was using US weapons, so that would not be a problem.
I'm also quite sure the short take off and landing capabilities of the Viggen would have been very welcome in Norwegian service during the cold war.

There is a small glitch that i couldn’t fix; weapons are fired one at a time but they disappear two at once. Tried to fix the MDL with an hex-editor to no avail.

Made two versions for now:

- Attack, with four rocket launchers and two AIM-9
- Air defense, with four AIM-9 and two AMRAAM

Not much more can be done with current weapons configuration.

These are lightweight standalone variants, aliasing most of the stuff from the main version, since they require custom Aircraft.cfg and Panel.
Now They need some serious beta-testing … any volunteers?

Please report to MC5834@hotmail.it

Unfortunately, the "gun" mode, and no afterburner

The AA mod is OK!

Great stuff Corrado!

Some imputs:
-Only a few of the D updated JA 37 coud carry the AMRAAM, for most of the Jakt Viggens the Skyflash (Sparrow) is a much more realistic BVR weapon.
-As you probably know, only the JA had a semi permanent cannon in the shape of the 30mm KCA Oerlikon. This cannon is as far as I know the most powerfull cannon ever used in a modern western fighter. It has over 6 times the kinetic energy of a similar ADEN/DEFA 30mm cannon. The heavy shell had a very high muzzle velocity and almost flat tracetory out to 500m. It could be great if it is possible to simulate this special cannon. A very special feature of the JA and the 30 Oerlikan was that it could be used in automatic gun mode with the autopilot taking command of the aircraft. Sources say that it was a highly accurate system

-The AJ37 could be loaded with 2 30mm ADEN pods on the inner wing station. This pod is not modelled in our release.
-Have you got the M/70 pod working? It had 135mm rockets with a rather high speed and accuracy compared to the American 70mm FFAR system. If it is not possible to custom make the values for the rockets I think the 127 mm zuni rocket is a good substitute.

Beta v3 uploaded

- Fixed missing afterburner
- Switched to Skyflashes
- Switched to Zuni rockets
- Removed cannon on AJ version

Thanks anyone for the feedback and keep it coming!

So obviously there's a little too much reflection for this actual paint...but only a little. I was looking at pictures of it today and there is a slight reflective quality though not much...however this isnt for accuracy just seeing how things are working together. Again great job guys!

Does someone have a paint kit for this bird? All I'm really looking for are the new panel lines and rivets the team made for this redux version...I'd like to make a set of blank bumps, but I don't have the time to create them from scratch. FYI, bit of a different more developed model source to go by, the DCS Viggen is spectacular. The flight dynamics on it (and according to actual proper sources) it's a fairly easy to handle aircraft. From my observations the biggest limitation is the Angle of Attack due to intake airflow disruption which cause compressor stalls on the engine. Other than that, it's a total joy to fly.

Glad this thread was necro'd because I missed this when it first came out. Thanks, Henk and everyone else!

I have this up in P3D v4.2 and all is well, except... Has anyone replaced the F/A-18 HUD, which doesn't work in P3D v4? Not knowledgeable about panel.cfg editing, so not sure how to bring in a different HUD from another plane. (I was thinking maybe Dino's F-14?)

DennyA, here is a P3Dv4 update (https://app.box.com/s/7ujsbmnwyuweklh1j7njfhr0mu35wy7r) which includes a new HUD and XMLTools loadout manager. The morons at Rikoooo "borrowed" our files, repackaged them and put it on their download site without asking permission so I am not going to release an official update package on AVSIM. The P3Dv4 update requires XMLTools (freeware, Google for it if you do not have it yet). I also do not have time to explain in detail how to install the P3Dv4 update so I would say stay away from it if you do not have some understanding of the P3Dv4 file structure etc.

I avoid downloading from Rikooo because I know they update packages without permission, plus I don't trust EXE installers. So awesome that your file just has the needed stuff.

Thanks again!

I have been reading up on the SFI AJ37 flight manual and with the help of part 2 (formely secret) done some adjustments to the fuel entry in the cfg file in order to replicate the capacity and location of the tanks on the Viggen. this has also been done to the location of the store pylons. The current hot rod have the Jakt Viggen engine power and this is not realistic for the AJ/SH, I have made a separate folder for the AJ/SH/AJS models with the RM8A engine. See entries below

Change the fuel entry:

Any feedback on these mods are welcome!

For me the aircraft wobble back and fort in the yaw axis at lower speeds (both before and after my mods), do any of you fm guru's have some advise to make it more stable?

Bjoern
June 19th, 2018, 12:42
I'd say check your vertical tail area and location. Or simply crank up yaw stability. Or add a yaw damper.

If you want to fix the problem at its source, this is your guide:

Any chance for the re-mapped (fixed version) to be done for fs2004 as well since this addon was originally for that platform?

JensOle
June 28th, 2020, 03:25
Henk is the mastermind behind the model rework. But I think the reworked model has moved so much away from the FS2004 format that it is not a straight forward job to make it FS2004 compatible.
