Hi Guys, I wonder if anyone can help with this at all?

I would very much like to have a Royal Navy version of the Just Flight Tiger Moth; to represent an aircraft from the Royal Naval College Dartmouth, 'Britannia', Air Experience Flight, based at Roborough, Plymouth, UK.

The particular example that I am looking for is when they were in over all Silver, with Orange Dayglo stripes.

Pics of a model kit of this aircraft that I made, (other shots available):-

I don't have the JF Tiggie but this paint would certainly be welcome on Ant's model so if anyone here has that and would like to throw some paint at it.. it'd be much appreciated:encouragement:

I know very little about repainting, but I suspect Ant's would be easier, especially as it has some overall bare finishes as a starting point.

Right ok, I have been told about that version, sounds like it's the preferred Tiggie by all accounts, thanks dhasdell

I've always wanted to repaint Ant's excellent Tiger Moth in a whole range of Fleet Air Arm colours and this thread has spurred me on... I've made a start! I'm trying to use the same dayglo etc as I did with my Royal Navy repaints for Dave Garwood's Hunters. If I succeed I'll probably release the Tiger Moth repaints as a batch like I did those Hunters too.

If you can fit it in I'd rather like a 1950's RAF silver with yellow bands, and maybe a pre-war yellow overall, please.

Silver with yellow bands comes as one of the default paints for it me thinks. Had a look this afternoon with a view to making a start on one but as Andy has picked up the challenge.. I'm happy to sit and wait:biggrin-new:

Same here. I've been poking through the paint kit and was thinking of giving it a go myself. Still might do a couple just for the practice though.

Yes, but it's an Australian one, as is the overall yellow with rather unusual rudder striping.

One good thing with the paint kit, is it comes with the layers for all the included paint schemes, so swapping a reg or two shouldn't be difficult.

Well, well! Seems like there's quite a lot of interest in this suggestion; the Royal Navy did indeed use the Silver/Yellow band colours at Roborough as well although much earlier of course!
Must take a look at Ant's Tiger Moth!

I see that you're not a million miles away from me, in fact in the County next door!
Mate, if you like, I have a few more images of both the model and of the real aircraft at Roborough. Plus, a list of the Tiger Moth serial numbers of the aircraft based there! If it's of any help i'll PM them to you Ok?

Progress has been rapid and successful here! If I were on the right PC I'd post some shots.

The FAA Tiger Moths have always fascinated me, in the same way as their Hunters. Over the years I've collected photos of them, but more are always very welcome please! Their paint, dayglo patches, fonts etc are subtly different on almost every machine, and over time too... but I love a challenge. I'm happy to do a yellow FAA one, plus silver and yellow FAA (there was at least one example which retained this scheme onto the mid/late '60s).

I'm thinking in the short term I may upload one scheme for people to get going with, then release a whole bunch as a package.

Hi Martin,

You've posted two of the photos that I had found; well done mate!

T-7404 Guess what? THAT is the Tiger Moth that I flew in, back in 1988; she had an unfinished silver front engine cowling at the time!
What a coincidence!

Just an observation: The model has the wrong roundels compared to the real aircraft. It should be the post war type D roundel and not the small red circle pre/early war type A.

Hi Andy,

As DaveWG says I'm really looking forward to the results too!

NL878 as depicted in the model kit I did; was credited as being the last Biplane to fly from an aircraft carrier.
This took place on board HMS Eagle while she was undergoing sea trials in the Western Channel, following an extensive refit at Devonport Dockyard in 1964.
On the 20th June that year, it was suggested that in order to give the deck crews some practice in aircraft handling using the new equipment, prior to her receiving her squadrons; to ask if 'Britannia Flight's' Tiger Moths being close at hand (Plymouth), might like to provide some aircraft and gain a little mutual training!

And so it was, NL878 being the last off the deck!

I had to have a bit of a chuckle here ... no hook required , catapult travels faster the than the Tiggie and you could probably (sideways) takeoff from the starboard side to the port side with room to spear:untroubled:

Ive been looking around online, trying to work out how Roborough looked when these tiggies were flying from there, there's a few modern Plymouth scenery's out there, but it might be a nice idea to retro the stock EGHD when these tiggies arrive.

Ooh!, now there's an idea Ian!
If memory serves, it was to all intents and purposes a collection of wooden huts left over from the Second World War, accompanied by 2 (I think) Bellman hangars. When there was a flight of Gloster gladiators in residence. Oh!, and grass of course not Tarmac, that came later!
I'll see what I can find as well, nice idea Ian👍😉

OK, here is a WIP screenshot. I'm focusing on XL714 as the base paint, with others to follow. There is still quite a bit to do. The tail (elevators) are missing their dayglo and the colours are looking very "flat" because I'm still working on the spec and alphas. With these in place it should come alive, especially in terms of that tricky dayglo, which is always tough to get right.

I'm about to drive across country to care for a family member undergoing surgery this week, so although I may have a chance to check forums my work these repaints will go on hold for the remainder of the week. I was hoping to get one published before I left, but I've simply run out of time. I may then end up publishing them all as a package.

cheers

I'm back in action and the base paint is almost done. I think you'll agree the flatness of the paint without spec and alphas has completely gone (besides the elevators, which need finishing). Believe it or not the RGB of the grey and dayglo etc haven't changed at all... it all comes down to the extras and the lighting (e.g. the dayglo doesn't glow as much in cloudy conditions, whereas what you're seeing here is noon on a cloudless summers day)!

As a matter of interest; the 'tail code' letter, for this Tiggie was grey as you've correctly done. Where as other ones were in Dayglo orange; maybe 714s came off leaving the adhesive behind? Nice attention to detail Mate!

Would you Adam 'n' Eve it, I've finished the repaint! Rather than wait any longer I'm going to publish this one on its own right away (don't hold your breath for any more...).

I'll be uploading here at SOH and also at All Nodes, but for now it can also be downloaded here:

http://www.mediafire.com/download/nlbk7r96kud919i/XL714_BNRC_Tiger_Moth_repaint_P3D_FSX.zip

... and here, for any computers which might complain about Mediafire...

https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B6gEOUK1wISNb2FSRnlnRFRnYjA

I need to point out the textures are designed and optimised for Prepar3D, where the lighting and overall rendering are different (waaaay superior IMO). In P3D the silver finish and especially the dayglo (which changes colour according to lighting) are much better. In FSX you may find the dayglo rather stark and the silver may have a blue tint. The shots below are from Prepar3D. I can't recommend it highly enough!

Enjoy!

XL714 at Roborough; once home to the Dartmouth Royal Naval College, 'Britannia' Air Experience Flight.
She looks wonderful in her new clothes! Many thanks Andy!

I'm glad you like it ChipShop! It is also great to see one's repaints in other's screenshots and a relief to know they are working OK!

All the best

Andy

Yes indeedy Andy!
It's brought back some very happy childhood memories, watching them at Roborough!

I've been flying her at all times of the 'virtual day', to see how the different light shows off on the airframe, in particular, the early morning sunrise gives a beautiful sheen to the fabric of the wings!

I'm certainly looking forward to the other RN variations that you've mentioned!
All the best Mate,

On that note, what RN Tiger Moth repaint would be next on everyone's want list?

That's Easy; NL878 WITH inboard dayglo wing stripes and tail fin letter, then one of the 'Empire' silver with yellow stripes for the early version perhaps BB814, PLEASE!?

There's a weird scheme for T8191 at Yeovilton in 1972, very much like the Chipmunk T10 red/grey scheme, alas I have no images of the upper surfaces for this one!

(I can help with other images if you get stuck Andy!)

All the best,

As a matter of detail Andy, I've noticed that there's no yellow propeller tips on the XL714 model; is that something you can add at all?

I also note that apart from really early days, almost from the word go, the crew wore the early Mk1 silver bone dome, without the pull down visor fitted, might that be possible?

The crew are part of the model, so I can't change that. You'd have to ask Ant.

The prop tips are a possibility...

Ok, thanks for the info. Andy.
As mentioned, I've a few obscure 'Tiggie' images if you get a bit stuck.

Now that we have this little beauty in the Hangar; I think it only right and fitting for Dave B to land her on the flight deck of an RN aircraft carrier.
All in the interest of recreating history, you understand!
Over to you Dave......................:loyal:

What.. AGAIN??:biggrin-new:

TBH.. I've only flashed FSX up a handful of times recently and purely to check out a new RN ship (currently WIP). Got a bit bored with the whole kit'n'kaboodle:(

You are indeed a Splendid Fellow Mr. B:applause:
You have the Admiral's permission to draw an extra tot of rum:very_drunk:

In case anyone is wondering if we've lost the plot; this actually did happen in the summer of 1967!

When Tiger Moth's of BRNC Air Experience Flight based at Roborough in Plymouth were invited by the powers that be, to perform deck landings aboard HMS Eagle, which had undergone extensive maintenance. So, prior to Eagle receiving her squadrons, took the opportunity to test their new flight deck and lift equipment, also a chance for deck crews to practice their aircraft handling skills.
