Just wondering if anyone has done a skin for Allens excellent G4M1 Betty in the markings of the Betty Yamamoto was aboard when shot down in April 1943.Tail number is T1-323 from the 205th kokutai NAU. Also the second Betty tail number T1-326? Searching but sometimes things are hiding.I saw one Yamamoto Betty on here but it was antiquated and proper skins for Allens G4M1 would be perfect to round out my I-Go missions am ready to release(just need the Bettys right for Yamamoto).

Also, I added an entry in the dp as payload for "VIP Passenger(s) and Cargo.Anyone know of cargo/passengers for japanese planes could use? I remember the FDG C47 had droppable cargo. Without it may just have to lead the entry without an actual payload but have it set as the loadout.

Its just a standard green scheme with white squares around the fuselage insignia and a simple "323" on the vertical stabilizer. You can touch up any Betty in your hangar with these minor cosmetics in less than 45 minutes.

How? I have not a clue about painting planes.

No one does until they put their hand in it. Its just like learning any other thing, such as mission-building for example: you study, ask a few questions here and there and you do. And the small cosmetic jobs such as this request make excellent labs for a beginner.

True.So where do I get started? I assume I need a certain program? Ah , to further my CFS 2 OCD.

To do your own painting your going to need a program better than MS Paint. GIMP is free and I'm sure some others free ones are around. Go to The Paint Shop_Skinnin' Your Game! part of the fourm http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/forumdisplay.php?23-The-Paint-Shop_Skinnin-Your-Game!

One of the sticky threads have a list of free and pay paint programs. Next you will need DXTbmp. http://www.mwgfx.co.uk/programs/dxtbmp.htm This is need to save the texture in formats that CFS2 can use. Also having imagetool.exe by MS isn't a bad idea. I don't have a good understaing of imagetool.exe but sometimes I use it to save BMPs that don't look right when saved with dxtbmp.

Allen summed up step one - the "tool box". And you can also add this site to your resources: http://www.simmerspaintshop.com/forums/forum.php

Thanks.Ill have to sit down and try some painting. To clarify as seen conflicting information. Were the escorting Zeros A6M3 32 "Hamps" with square wings or the A6M3 22?

Allen

My searching says they where the unsquare wings Model-22s. The A6M3-32 "Hamp" didn't have the range of the early A6M2 thanks to a smaller tank and less lift from the clipped wings. The A6M3-22s had the range prob fixed by adding more fuel.

That is what I thought, most said model 22 but saw a few saying 32.

You asked:
1) "Can you tell from where did Yamamoto's Betty Bomber depart from on his last flight to inspect troops on Bouganville?"
No.705 Kaigun Kokutai, Mitsubishi G4M1 Betty, s/n 2656, call [323], flown by KOTANI, Takeo, was based at Vunakanau, but had been flown into Rabaul East A/F (Lakunai) for use as a transport by Admiral YAMAMOTO and his staff.
2) "Also his escort of 6 Zero's where were they based?"
The six Mitsubishi A6M3 model 32 Hamps were attached to No.204 Kaigun Kokutai based at Lakunai (Rabaul East)
3) "Can you confirm the.. pilots as the escort"?
CPO HIDAKA, Yoshima (KIA 6/7/43)
Lt. MORIZAKI, Takeshi (KIA 6/16/43)
PO2 OKAZAKI, Yasuji (KIA 6/7/43)
FPO SUGITA, Shoichi (KIA 4/15/45)
FPO TSUJINOUE, Toyomitsu (KIA 7/1/43)
FPO YANAGIYA, Kenji (survived the war)
(Source: John T. WIBLE)

None of the escort Zeros from No.204 ku were shot down by the 347th FG pilots in spite of claims to the contrary. However, Ray HINE, an American pilot, was lost in his Lockheed P-38. It is possible some other unit stationed at Buin (Kahili or Kihili A/F) or on Ballale may have lost some Zeros, but this has not been established beyond all doubt.

204 ku flew a mixture of model 22s & model 32s. Maybe the escort was mixed?

Could be Hamps but give the number of them made was small (350 or so) The Hamps really weren't well suited to the Solomon with the loss of around 1,000 km (620 mi) in range so I would have thought by than most would have been out of service by than. Flight to Balalae (not in CFS2) from Vunakanau is only 510 km. Hamps could make the flight just fine.

My guess (and it's only a guess) is that due to ever increasing combat losses of fighters, the IJN Koukutais had mixed groups by that time, consisting of all available models grouped together. I would not be suprised to see mixed flights of A6M3 mod 32's and Mod 22's with a few A6M2's thrown in for seasoning.

After some more reading decided to go with the Hamp. Also, Uncle was kind enough to whip the skins for Allens G4M1 and A6M3 32 Hamp. I have two versions of USAAF side of the operation, one with waypoints and one requires bit more navigating without the TD, using the map. Two missions flying the IJN side of things, one flying Yamamoto's plane other flying escort. Testing missions now, likely release them first of next week.

A new entry has been added to Add-Ons Library, category CFS 2 Missions Add-Ons

Description: Five missions (three USAAF and two IJN) involving the shoot down of Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto on April 18, 1943 by P-38 Lightnings over Bougainville. The 3 American missions include a standard using nav points and tactical display and two others requiring player to use map and waypoint information provided to navigate for more of a challenge.

Two IJN missions are included. One the player flies Yamamoto's G4M1 Betty and another flies a Zero escorting the Betty.

These missions are challenging but fun.

Thanks. Have more coming up.Eventually will get my CVE campaign finished but most of missions became corrupted and just have not had the interest in redoing them lately, so turned to various other missions needed to finish up and release.

Thank you for sharing this mission. The French ace Pierre Clostermann wrote a book about crucial missions of WW2, including this one. Ever since reading it, I have wanted to fly this mission, and now you have made it possible. Thanks a lot.

Hi Dasuto247

That got my curiosity up. How are the missions corrupted? All of them? Happened at the same time? What happened?

Not a problem, that is why I created the missions, always wanted to fly them myself.Let me know how they play out for you.

I'm not sure, I had 40 missions completed for phase 1 of campaign(saipan invasion), was going to do a few to cover Guam and Tinian and then release.I went to load one up and it wouldnt load, said something about corrupted file.Tried to load another, same message.Roughly 30 of missions were same and not a clue what happened. One guess is night before I had an issue when was testing with planes not starting in correct takeoff position on a CVE, just that particular one.So I made changes to the CFG to correct and then was done for the night.I tried to test next day and files were corrupted. The CVE in question was no in the game in 10 missions which is why I guess the 30 were corrupted.I tried fixing them but no luck so scrapped them all, will start up again soon.Won't take as long since I know how want things to flow now.

Dasuto247,

It stinks that you had to scrap all of those missions, but you also did a great job on the Yamamoto ones. Thanks for all of your hard work!

Thanks.Which version of the US mission did you fly? Or all? Just curious how and if people enjoy navigating without the TD like I do. Were results satisfactory? I tested them all various times and of course each time went a little different but usually had a historically accurate conclusion.lol in the IJN mission I did make it through flying Yamamoto's plan since 38's shot down Ugakis but while I was near Ballale a P-38 that apparently followed me but I did not see shot me down while my I was on approach, gear and flaps down lol Fired tail gun at time and made his right engine smoke but was too late for me.

Did test the music player I added? How did your fuel situation play out in the 38?

Hi Dasuto247!
It is nice to see that a new mission builder has joined here! I'll fly the Yamamoto missions one of these days! I like the fact that you also did the Japanese side!

About your corrupted missions: Are other missions in the same install of rhe sim still working, or is the whole install corrupted?

A while ago I also had the problem of missions suddenly not working anymore, with messages about corrupted files. (don't remember exactly what the messages were, this happened several months ago)
It turned out that the problems were caused by too many objects in the Objects_DP folder. I deleted a number of files from this folder, mostly CFS1 objects and stock weapons that I don't use anyhow, and suddenly everything was back to normal.

So if you recently added some new objects, maybe that's the cause?
Just an idea I had reading your post, but maybe..

Cheers,
Wolfgang
