Hallo Heywooood,

I remember from good old model flying times the Guillow's models to be "paper" or "fabric covered.
Looking to your models it seems to me that you "skinned" them with fine balsa. Did you have weight problems for flying them?
Yours
Papi

hi michaelvader -
I have attached links to the build threads where I have depicted how the models were built using the balsa 'in fill' method I first saw another modeler describe.
Search the name : Dave Duckett at virtual aerodrome or at the Guillows site I have linked above to see his work also.

These models are for display only as I have built them. The objective was to see how well the Guillows kits were executed wrt to scale appearance in overall form, and then to augment them with scale details and
modest enhancements.

This last model is NOT a Guillows product - the F/A 18c is from Today's Hobbies
I hope this helps. Please check the links or browse the Guillow modelers forum for more information and photo's

Hi Dave - and thank you for your encouragement!
Don't worry - I have purchased and started a lot more projects than I have finished for the same reasons as you.

Sometimes my eyes have been bigger than my plate..or whatever that expression is, so I had to learn the hard way (several times) to start small with a project I know I can stick with - and
take it as far as possible, rather than take on something big and hope to hang with it.

The balsa model outlet is great for me because I can find virtually any subject matter (it's kind of a golden age for these kit mfgs just as it is for flight simulation) and these planes are of a scale
you just cannot find in the plastic kits. Using the infill method and a ton of sandpaper, a modeller can create a fairly nice representation of the full scale aircraft.

I am not as talented as many out there who really go all out but I think what I create from these kits is a decent model that satisfies my own interest and abilities..such as they are.

The newest one on the table now is a real challenge - the F-14A Tomcat. This is a big and complex air frame and will push me to my limits I think.

Nice stuff,I've been working on some RC trucks one in 1/10 th which is a keep, and a 1/14 th big rig with a flat bed trailer.the truck and trailer are kits, and the jeep is a "build up " of after market parts to to build up the hard plastic keep body.im having fun with them but it's taking forever lol.

I built up a couple of Tamiya R/C offroad trucks - Blackfoot and the Beetle - for friends who bought them and needed help...they have a lot of bits n pieces to them.

In your thread on this page I can see these kits are much more involved than those were.

In my case I found one or two helpful youtube vids that allowed me to see what the instruction sheets failed to properly illustrate.

the model requires a 9" prop of a type that is uncommon for this scale and the only thing provided in the kit is a rubber band type plastic one..so I had to make a scale one.
I have never had much luck making propellers - none actually...but this one looks ok.

The primer is on the prop and the engine cowling but I still need to apply more sealer and sanding effort to the wing and landing gear before I can prime them.
This Dumas kit is very nice but there is one key element missing. There are no patterns or parts for the wing root fairings...and nothing on the plan sheet either.
I have made a few paper patterns of my own but nothing is working out - too many compound curves to deal with. I could make them from balsa - cut formers from 1/16" thick sheet stock, space them an inch or so apart along the wing root - then infill with balsa and wood filler - then contour sand the hollow with sandpaper wrapped around a dowel. Or - skip it because that would be bananas

the cowling with the engine and prop mounted temporarily...looks like a bit of orange peel effect on the cowl so some light sanding and another coat of gloss black - it all gets an overcoat of clear after final assembly so that will smooth it out

so the engine kit just arrived for the Laird..Williams Brothers in Texas makes extremely high quality aircraft accessories in molded plastic.
This is their Wasp 'dummy' engine kit - meaning it is open at the back and through the crankcase, so I it can be fitted easily over an electric motor or gear housing for RC flying models to have the appearance of a scale radial engine providing the power.

These are perfect for 1/12" scale balsa display models too - and they come in all popular RC scales. They offer Le Rhone engines the same way for the WWI and similar models also.

as indicated in the header of this post - many of these images are hosted by photocrooked.errrrr bucket and will probably be blocked soon.

that is all

heywooood
July 8th, 2017, 07:00
so some work has been done on the Widgeon. This is a terrific kit from Dumas, as all of them I have built thus far have been.

fuselage rear - sides complete
http://i.imgur.com/7a6CaKE.jpg?2

they need to match precisely -
http://i.imgur.com/MVKDK6B.jpg?2

..so you end up with this initial assembly of the rear fuselage
http://i.imgur.com/4FjSdDv.jpg?2

then you build the front half of the fuse..
http://i.imgur.com/VVrTSWv.jpg?2

heywooood
July 8th, 2017, 07:08
then the two halves are mated. The Dumas solution to the assembly of this major part of the aircraft is very well thought out. At this point the interior can be detailed and the structure is very strong as well as square and straight.

This will be a display model (more of a toy for my granddaughter who will be 5 shortly) so I plan to forgo the detailing for the most part and focus on making it as strong as I can. We'll probably just hang it in her room but I want her to be able to handle it if she wants to.

I will be building another one at some point for the hangar - that one will be detailed and painted in my preferred style.

I have to ask
Do you get any time to sleep

lol - yes I sleep
I appreciate your encouragement too - thank you.
I left my job of 26 years not too long ago to focus on a family health crisis - thankfully, that situation has passed for the most part, but I have had some difficulty reentering the workforce.
Suffice to say I seem to be past my prime in the eyes of the many interviewers I have encountered over the past year or so.
I started back into building these models as a way to keep focused on tasks and problem solving of a nature that I COULD resolve. One has to maintain ones confidence in the face of so much discouragement.
Also because I was inspired by some of the artists and their works that I had seen on the internet.
Working on these models is a passion for me - I have always loved aviation and the machines that have been built to fly. I try to put that love into every one of them, that inspiration I have always gotten from them.
Posting them and seeing that they are appreciated for what they are and for the effort I have made gives me a much needed sense of gratitude. I am grateful to you who have taken the time to express words of encouragement - and I am grateful for the hobby that is saving my sanity if not my life at the moment. By taking pictures of the work and the results, I find a way of thanking you all.
Thank You All

I have decided that rather than try to replace the images that were lost to the photobucket fiasco - I will instead just place a link here to the Virtual Aerodrome site where my collection of images and builds are stored.

You can see each of the projects there (except for the F-18) by clicking on the appropriate 'Hangar' image.

You can also select other artists and their works by name or aircraft type - or by the model manufacturer. That makes it easy to see lots of images during construction of a particular model if, for instance, you happen to be a builder yourself and want to get a sense of the kits and some technique.

small update..
the wing is partially infilled and some interior cabin trim has been added - also the main landing gear supports are being fabricated from balsa block material.
the forward main float struts are anchored to these as are the wing struts.
the floats have been laid up and as soon as the wing is completed the floats will be infilled and have their nose blocks attached and surfaced - then I can begin to work on the tail sections.

as you know, the main forward float struts and the wing struts are all attached to these 'stubs' so they needed to be strong and solid. I used balsa block material carved to shape and sanded. Once I am satisfied with the shape and finish I can seal the entire fuselage with a couple more coats of clear sealer. Then I will complete the wings and begin fabrication of the tail surfaces.
After that I need to finish the floats and then make the struts.
Still a ton of work to do on the SR10 but it's coming along

I'm going to have to extend the floats and also lay a 1/32" thick birch ply skin over the top and sides to make them proper scale for this model.

They were the right size for the Guillows DHc-2 but are a tad too small for this larger Dumas Reliant..

To extend them I will cut them in half at the step and add a 1" thick balsa block and sand it to shape

You have done it again mate a superb model
I started model building 50 plus years ago but I think I was never up to your standard

John

Believe it or not - The very first model I ever tried to build was an SE5 Balsa kit - I couldn't say which company made it, all I remember was that beautiful green biplane on the box top, with brightly colored roundels on the wing and fuselage. Diving through the clouds guns blazing...
We had driven across country from Atlanta to Pt Colbourne, Ontario. Somewhere along the way we went through a hardware store and they had a very small stack of boxes next to the counter. I remember my grandpa saying, "you wont be able to build THAT" but he finally broke down. It sat on my lap unopened for about 400 miles and I just kept imagining it flying alongside the car. This would have been 1967 - I was six years old.
Needless to say when I opened the box once we got 'home' I was dismayed to see that it was just a box full of sticks, paper and a block of wood the size of a pack of cigarettes...
I went about gluing things together as you would expect any little kid to do - high quality craftsmanship my ass - just give me something that looks airplane-ish.
In the end and after some help and swearing about a waste of money from gramps (prolly $2.50) , we had something to throw across the yard. Once.
Never forgot that experience. Not something you would expect to 'build' on, eh ?

Thank you for your encouragement, musterpilot - I have another couple of kits here in the shop that are unopened, nother Widgeon that I want to put radial engines on (it comes with parts and provisions for the Ranger engines but I want to model it with P&W radials) and a German Pfeil Do335 and a Navy Grumman Tiger. I don't know when I'll be able to get to any of them though..

This pilot is the wrong scale for the model at approx 1/12” scale...the plane is closer to 1/28” so I removed the big feller for use on another project more suitable for use.
The new man is wearing an A-2 with Mae West so I think this plane will be finished in the Coastie paint as depicted on the box top. Now I can use the kit supplied markings as well.

I have the floats assembled with their struts. I have substituted aluminum tubing for the strip platic supplied bu the kit mfg. because it looks better, will be stronger over time, and because I dont need the floats to flex on hard landings. Hopefully as a display model there wont be any of those.
So I still need to make the horizontal tail, and the propellers. Then begins final assembly and sanding / sealing, primer and paint.
But this is the home stretch I guess.

heywooood
January 6th, 2018, 03:50
The modified nacelles turned out pretty well I think. The modification was not difficult at all as it turns out. I was sweating it early on though. I used cowlings from the guillow Catalina kit which I used as patterns to cut 1/16” thick balsa circles of the same diameter. One of each of these circles were attached to the faces of the existing kit supplied oval bulkheads used to make the Ranger nacelles forward of the wing leading edge. Additional circles were each used as the new radial engine firewalls and inserts flush inserted at the back of each cowling as a mating surface to the nacelles. The diameter matched to the overall outer dimensions of the original oval bulkheads perfectly.

all I had to do was carve the blades.

heywooood
January 9th, 2018, 14:21
The paint scheme for this model will be the Coast Guard natural alum fuselage, tail and nacelles with the yellow wing top. It will have a black anti-glare panel in front of the windscreen and possibly on the cowlings too ( inner half nearest the pilot on both cowls) and even though the r/l aircraft still has its Ranger inline engines on it I think this model will look good in those clothes with its radials and round cowlings. Hope so anyway

The Grumman design on these flying boats is simple but beautiful and Dumas has made a kit that is very true to that design. I liked the Ranger version but prefer the look of radials. I have to say this model turned out better than I expected even though I did commit a couple of unforced errors.

both wings are framed and I have begun the infill process on the port wing. The fuselage has most of its plastic appendages attached with the exception of the rear
gunner's canopy. That part cannot be installed until the rear stabilizer is attached.
The green color applied is the interior green that will show as the interior trim color on the clear parts IE: the canopy and bombardier stations window framing. The aircraft will be painted as a Marine

lots of filling and sanding yet to be done on the wings but the major components are attached.

I have to say I prefer the Dumas approach to engine nacelles...I think building them up out of balsa makes for a much easier assembly and a much cleaner look with less than half the work.
Fitting together large preformed plastic shells and then fitting them to the wing's airfoil is problematic. They are preformed and therefore unforgiving. So much trimming and filling and flexing and so on..
Whereas with balsa the process is simple and the fitting is unnecessary and the attachments rendered seamless with relative ease.

That said here we are and much remains to be done to get these plastic parts fared in and smooth in transition to each other and to the respective wings

a little progress.. the infill of the fuselage and cowling are complete. Some filling and sanding (round one) are done.

I need to complete the engine and paint it so I can button up the cowling (mate the balsa section to the plastic forward section) before I continue the filling and sanding process on that assembly.

I also need to make a seat, deck, and panel for the cockpit and get the pilot painted and finished.

thanks musterpilot - so far the project is going along..
I have added the the main gear strut fairings and just need to clean them up. Once they are fully shaped, filled and sanded, I will prep them for paint then move onto the wing center section - get that mounted to the fuselage and faired in.

This model looks like it will be mostly assembled prior to paint. I will leave off the wheel pants, tail wheel, and wing struts probably and paint those items separately. This aeroplane will be an extreme challenge to paint properly, no doubt about it.
Still not sure if I will attach the canopy prior to painting or paint it separately...decisions decisions - - - on the plus side no one dies if I'm wrong when I make these calls, so there's that

the basic Wasp JR is painted. I'll add the plug wires, ring housing, push rods etc before buttoning it up - this is just a test fit to make sure the engine sits back far enough without being too deep in the cowling.

also you can see the fuselage is about halfway through the prepping process. I use spackle paste, followed by Gesso which goes on in multiple coats, then the sealer...then primer - then topcoat and finally semi-gloss clear overall.

The Gesso is a new step introduced to us by a well established model master craftsman on another website. So far it looks like it goes a long way toward smoothing the balsa textures...I like it.

Heywooood you should really post some of these at www.iModeler.com (http://www.iModeler.com). Everyone there would love to see them! Kudos for taking on the Bulldog. (I have the Williams Bros kit to build but after my GeeBee Z and Hughes 500 in the Reese's scheme I have some time off from fancy paint work.) You showed the fuselage stripes, but for got to show the way the N-number and stripes play together on the wing. Truly maddening! Actually I'm surprised you don't just go a little bigger and put some R/C guts in them!

I have made the wing struts but need to work out the mounting situation. The prototype has fairings and flanges on both ends so I have a bit of figuring to do.

my next project and I can't decide on the paint scheme..Navy, AF - yellow overall, yellow wings white fuselage...or AF blue fuselage and yellow wings or all silver post '44
or this Navy hodgepodge. Apparently as these trainers went through service life it was not unusual for the fabric and the metal, when it was replaced, to go on in whatever color. Eventually the AF just left them in the silver paint the factory produced them in.
In this case it looks like this aircraft got all new metal surfaces in the light grey undercoat and the owner has not yet applied his Navy yellow to it

I have modified the kit supplied cylinders and pilot. First - the pilot seemed to be in a state of rapture, staring up almost vertically to the sky. I cut out the material under his chin and repositioned his head to look more longitudinally if a bit left-ish.
The cylinders were made thicker and taller - more to scale - and to accommodate the exhaust pipes, give them room to bend into the collection ring. I will add the spark plugs and wiring as well once they are installed to the crankcase

Thank you, Daveroo

I have just finished laying up the wings. I will infill the lower wing and then shape, sand and fill it until it is as ready for paint as the fuselage/main assembly is.
Once that is done I can attach the lower wing and fair it into the bottom of the fuselage using the plan instruction of adding stringers and then infilling until a smooth and continuous shape is achieved.

At that point I plan to paint the main assembly, then complete the elevator and rudder, paint and apply them to the model.

The upper wing will be done as a separate and complete model unto itself..there is a ton of detail to add to the upper wing after all. Then I can paint it and attach it after the windscreens are installed to the fuselage.
I still need to have decals made (or make them myself) but there is plenty of time for that.

heywooood
June 29th, 2018, 07:38
small update..not much to report as this process is labor intensive. The lower wing has been framed, infilled, and now shaped. The process continues with more filling and sanding to remove the stringer and former lines.
After that comes the sealing stage with multiple coats of Gesso and medium to fine grade sanding to prep for paint. Once that is done the lower wing will be attached to the fuselage and faired in with a balsa belly pan.

the plan is to paint the fuselage and lower wing assembly (after fitting the cabane struts to make certain of a good, loose fit, so that when the time comes they will just drop into the bottom wing with a bit of wiggle room to set the proper incidence and depth. This way the upper wing can be attached squarely with minimal alterations. So the entire aircraft assembly (sans upper wing) will be completely assembled and painted - then the upper wing will be completely assembled and painted - and then the upper wing will be attached to the model.

I have ordered the decals from Bedlam Creations and hopefully they will be here before the final assembly. If not it's ok - I have a ton of work to do on this project yet

like all of the Guillow models that use plastic augmentation, those parts and their configuration are less than ideal. The main gear upper fairings for instance, are way too thick and obviously misshapen.
Add to it that they are no fun to work with as far as how they are joined together or how durable they are(n't) and you have a significant drawback to just using sheet or block balsa and carving your own parts.

Next time (if there is one) I am going to set aside all of the kit plastic and just fabricate my own fairings for the Stearman..

That said - the tail cone and vertical fin components aren't bad as far as their shape and assembly are concerned - but balsa would be more durable.

The patience of a long distance runner.
Coming along nicely.
Your comment about the plastic parts struck a chord with me, way back (and I mean WAY BACK!) when I built several Monogram 'scale' models they included 'plastic' components.
Early injection moulding was rudimentary to put it kindly.
But at least one had to build the model, unlike today's 'shake and bake' kits.
:encouragement:

heywooood
July 8th, 2018, 22:10
One of the main reasons I have moved into this realm exactly. The plastic kits, especially the very incredibly evolved Tamiya and similar are so finely engineered and masterfully mass produced that there is no longer much personal effort required.

The reason I do this at all is that it affords unusual opportunities for imagination, artistry, ingenuity, and meditation. The big plastic kit mfgs have removed almost ALL of that from the realm of the builder and taken it for themselves.

In addition, the subject matter is no longer dynamic - simply put, they only create models of 'popular' subjects. I would much rather build a 1/24th scale balsa DH2C or 1/12th scale Super Solution than another plastic Mustang or ME109 and the balsa subject matter can go anywhere depending on one's level of competence or interest. There are scale model plans for literally ANY subject, and far more complete kits for more varieties of aircraft in balsa than in plastic if you include available 'out of production' material.

I've had the dubious pleasure over a few decades of being drafted into the judging team at what was originally the IPMS Australia championships which several of us finally turned into the Australia Model Expo.
The styrene still abounds but the categories now include paper models, balsa, resin, white metal or combinations of all, in short the 'modelling' now covers anything imaginable.
A couple of us old lags who have been to the Model Engineer Exhibition (at Wembley in my case) are feeling a little pleased with this, (perhaps 'smug'?) as the venue was moved to a far more professional location as well.
Living where we do now is very handy as most of the current generation of Expo Committee can't find me or think I'm dead!!!!:biggrin-new:
Haven't been to the Nationals for three or four years.

I have never attended an Expo, or any other kind of model meet..although I have visited the IPMS Websites and viewed tons of galleries and contest entries over the years.
I would never intentionally disparage any form of scale model building. I only meant to convey thatfor me, plastic model kits are too confining. It’s good to see the shows are now open to the other disciplines of paper, balsa and so on. That can only serve to grow or at least maintain broader interest.

heywooood
July 25th, 2018, 10:07
Well I very much appreciate your words of encouragement - thank you.
I have enjoyed working with scale models for a very long time...and aviation is a passion for me.
I see the earlier airplanes more as musical instruments than as machines, because they were made of wood and fabric, balanced, their flying wires 'tuned' and so on - and because the pilots who flew them
had to essentially perform as an equal part of the equation. The aircraft had to be 'played' constantly to get the flyer where he wanted to go safely.
In fact, most of the earliest aircraft were built in factories and by hands that built and worked on pianos and other instruments.

The Stearman was on the cusp of the transition to heavier, metal construction elements and the bigger more reliable power plants but is still a holdover to the earlier days.
I always try to get my models to reflect as well as possible, all of the key aspects of the full sized aircraft.
This model differs from that in one key aspect - it has no visible ribs or 'stringers' due to the infill method of construction and purists may not forgive that..
I could have attempted to simulate that look but in the end I decided that would look too...simulated.

I'm hoping that, once it is complete, this model will be accepted as it is. I want it to last a while and the tissue covering just doesn't hold up over time. The mylar covering tends to distort and pull the
balsa when it is tightened with heat, and quite frankly, I just wanted to see what a smooth Stearman would look like. Hopefully we'll see.

Coming along very nicely!
At least the rigging is fairly straight forward, I assume you can use straight wire (I like brass myself) in this scale?
One of the more useful materials I found for 1:48 and smaller scales came from my Mother's sewing basket, 'Shirring Elastic'!
It was also a source of 'Hat Elastic' for a variety of fluid lines in my scratch built cars and a type of elastic stripping that was flat and made of of (IIRC!) six sound sections that could be separated into individual strands.
Perfect for plug leads and similar small lines.
And then I discovered Kevlar 'tubes' available in multiple diameters.........:encouragement:
We modellers are regular scroungers if we notice something with 'possibilities'!

heywooood

exactly - one of the side effects of being a model maker is that constant running assessment of everyday items and packaging that goes on - the 'what else can this be used for' mode that is always 'on' in my head

heywooood
July 26th, 2018, 07:27
the black cockpit coaming padding is from an old electronic accessory cord from the collection that accumulates every time we buy something that plugs in anymore.
an old trick whereby you slice the cord to create a slot - pull the wires out of it - then slip that slot over the edges of the paper coamings and run a bead of adhesive either along the paper edge or along the underside
of the padding once it's applied. some might call it a shortcut but I think it looks right in this scale.

the upper wing infill process involves working the underside first and from the center out. I want to support the stringers initially and maintain equal tension so I cut a section of the 4" x 36" x 3/32" sheet about 8" long (I basically want to fill about 6 openings per strip) then using the wings stringers as a guide I line the section up to the center stringer and mark the distance to the next stringer on both ends. Using a straightedge I then cut the strip. That strip is marked along one edge (the leading edge of the wing) so I can keep it oriented to the openings I want to fill. Then, working from the center out and in a line, I fill in that row of openings until I have the entire center row filled in. Then I do the next row on the underside..leaving the LE and TE rows until the center rows of the top of the wing are done. In this way I can get the stringers on both sides of the upper wing supported with infill.
After that I finish the underside the same way, from the center out and working the trailing edge first. Then the top of the upper wing is done. Then finally the wing tips can be done.

Once this is completed I can rough sand the wing surfaces, LE and TE as well as the wing tip until I have a uniform shape and profile. Then the filler goes on in multiple coats with medium sanding in between each application. Hopefully at the end of that I'll have a nice smooth wing to begin to detail and seal.

The decal proofs have been confirmed so I should have them by mid August - about the time I will be ready for them.

working away on the top wing..the fuel tank is in, I still have to attach the trapeze brace and a few vent lines.

Then I can start on the underside with the fuel indicator tube, fuel valves and lines and the mirror etc...

meanwhile the next project has arrived - Guillow's P-40 in 1/16 scale...

I was thinking about Chennault's Aleutian scheme for it but might yet just do the later Tiger paint - love that shark mouth on a P-40

test fitting the wing struts to make sure they fit into the holes in the wings - alignment isn't bad either which is good. Anytime you can just set the upper wing onto the struts and be close to all of the variables of alignment you can call yourself a lucky bast..err modeler

I might be able to put the decals onto the main assembly tomorrow - then finish up on the upper wing and install it in a day or two as the paint is allowed to dry first.
We're getting closer to completion but the rigging will take some time to do.

I should be able to install a fully painted and completed upper wing tomorrow or the day after, then I can go onto the rigging and final assembly bits n parts

so the rigging placement holes are drilled out and now I want to pre-install the rigging lines into the top wing - this way I wont have to keep flipping the plane upside-down
endlessly..less handling means (hopefully) less chance of a ding or scrape etc..

the upper wing has its yellow coat on but I still need to paint the red 'find me if I crash' stripes on it.

mounting the upper wing. I attached the outer wing struts to the upper wing first using white glue..
as soon as they are secure but not 100% cured, I set the wing making sure to check the alignment.
Since there is some play due to the holes being hogged out until just a tad oversized compared to the strut ends, I can usually get a good fit and still be able to coax the wing into position. Then I use a toothpick with a dot of CYA adhesive to secure the lower strut ends in place. After that has cured - pretty quickly - I then paint the attachment points with a white glue and water mixture with a fine brush.
As soon as all is set and cured I can trim and fit the cabane struts and install them, being careful not to affect the alignment in any adverse way.

Now I just need to drill a few holes in the horizontal stabilizer and the lower fuselage, maybe apply a bit more adhesive to the struts throughout the day and then let that all dry 24 hrs - then tomorrow I can
start on the rigging.
Meantime I need to fabricate the mirror and housing and the fuel indicator tube..maybe paint the prop tips the prewar red/yellow/blue since I am just going to go with the kit supplied propeller. AS you can see I made the struts all Lt. Grey

This airplane being among my top 5 favorites, meant I had to work a little extry hard to get the result I wanted. This came very close.

once again I have to thank them fellers at GAS - as soon as they announced their new Stearman project I purchased this kit.

I hope to be able to learn how to paint in FSX so I can recreate this scheme onto their PT-17...

It was fun also referring to their 3D model for assistance while working out some of the details added to this kit.

if anyone is interested, I posted a brief pictorial on how I install the rigging lines - someone on another forum asked so at the end of this thread I posted some information.
