Hello All,

Because a few issues that I have to deal with over the next several weeks I have decided to release
the Beta Version of Vietnam for CFS2, I would hate to think that all the time was wasted on this project
if I did not at least release what has been compiled.

Warning: This is intended to be a totally Separate install of CFS2 or it will not work. It will require a pot
of coffee or at least 3 beers to complete the install ( about an hour or so ).

Thanks to Al Simms, George Knowles, Martin Wright, Ken French, Phil Perrott, JustFlight LTD, Alpha Simulations
and many more.....I have been able to compile this great scenery that now includes 30 missions and 3 campaigns.

Me being only a "Mud Pusher" converted the missions to fit the scenery...But have yet to actually fly any of them.
Your testing will be much appreciated.

When you go to the page, the required downloads may seem overwhelming but they are not, most are simply drag
and drop or copy and paste.( 24 downloads )

Each download has an install readme, some have maps and others have a brief history in .jpg format.

Please note that although used with permission ,the copyright for the GSL scenery and missions is held by
JustFlight LTD. and can not be uploaded or used without express written permission by JustFlight LTD.

I can only hope that Ya'll enjoy this as much as I have had compiling and improving it.
I hope to have more coast lines, rivers and roads completed soon.

check it out here:
http://www.thefreeflightsite.com/Vietnam_Projects.htm

Your additions, improvements or rants and raves are all welcome.

Be safe my friends,

Dave

Looking Good No Dice!

I will keep an eye on your progress.

I called in naval gunfire and air support in MR-1 during my time there in ANGLICO.

Ah, Monkey Mountain!, spent a bit of time at the USMC barracks at the base of the radio re-trans station there.
Probably been across that bridge a few times heading back and forth to Danang Airbase.
Most of my time, though was spent at and north of Hue.

Devildog73,

Dude I will take any info or story you have, I have a beer drinking neighbor that was in the marine corp at the time,
other than that I would love real info to post for mission and scenery writers.

I will be adding separate pages to the Vietnam page, history..pics..ect in the near future.

I am Starting work on the VTP scenery of the Ho Chi Minh Trail but have nothing ready to release for mission writers at this point.

I will be releasing some eye candy coast lines before I decide to " go under the knife or not".

Your historic input and advice will be much appreciated on the " Forgotten War"

You are more than welcome to contact me direct at dea14u@aol.com

Nice SEA package No Dice,

If you would like a newer Alpha F-8, there's a conversion I started a while back that still needs a damage profile and panel work.
These could be finished to have a complete aircraft. Let me know and I'll get to work on her.

Hello dmaloof,

As far as I know, the freeware Vietnam for CFS2 was never released. This is a conversion of Al Simms Vietnam scenery for FS2004,
combined along side my scenery and now includes (with permission from Flight 1 LTD) some formerly commercial GSL scenery
and missions that were converted to fit the new layout.

Of course all of the credit has to go to original authors of the Aircraft, scenery macros ect...

I hope you enjoy it, sorry that it takes so much to download and get it up and running...

I am presently working on land a water masks plus other additions to the Cam Rahn Bay area.

Look for it soon.

PS, please do not add this to your existing CFS2 setup, make a new install or will mess what you have up.
unless you are willing to swap out the country config and other stuff each time.

It is released sir, will remain in beta forever, Its Freeware....
Beta is so people will hopefully always point out any problems or errors I have made.

And it will continue on...so long as people continue to download, submit projects or
I run out of space on the Free Flight Site.

You may have been thinking about a carrier product from Abacus publishing, no longer available
But I have had luck requesting older product from them, they will bend over backwards to help
you out if they can.

Hey guys, sounds good to me.

As stated previously, I only have the death angel model completed. (same as BC)
All the weapons are removed in the mdl. The forward four point mounts remain along with the under wing mer pylons.
I was thinking of putting aim-9's on the forward four and ground pounding ordinance under the wings. (assorted)

If it's ok with you bearcat, I can email this model to you for further inspection.
The texture used in the screenshot was done by DaveQ They're in the FSX library.
Also already have permission from Phil @ Virtavia to upload the conversion. That was about a year ago but I'm sure it still stands.

Well, still at the salt mine right now so I gotta run.

Yes ,
Please re download the "To Main Scenery" Folder and the "VNChulai " Folder
Let all over write, sorry about that but I found some texture conflicts, so
each file must be replaced.

Being I know your expertise,
Please note that the Aircraft required have had the DP updated to match the New Config File.

Many of the others have not:

Are you using USN for USMC aircraft?
I called in a lot of Navy and Marine aircraft on close air support missions.
Used a bunch of OV-10 Broncos as spotters with white smoke markers for the Cobras, F-4s and A-7s.

John,
I found some clusters that I forgot I had, BUT...please do not laugh at me, is there an easy way ( something that an old redneck like me could actually do ) to take some of Al Simms .api macros
and turn them into destroyable GSL objects ?

I have gone thru most of the tutorials on the free flight site but to no avail.

I think there is a way but not an easy one. I forget right off hand what is needed. need to make them into bgls. then you can add a destroyable model using Allens .bat set.

dasuto,
It looks like you have a wild weasel setup. Looks like a shrike with MK82s. Don't forget to out turn those SAMs.

You'll need an A-6 to do some Iron Hand. Brings some F-4s to cover your Six if you do. You wouldn't want a mig joining in. That reminds me, someone has to do the 'Flight of the Intruder' "Downtown" mission. The book version, not the movie.

good color pics or drawings with the color of the markings.

Spec needed are length and Dia or a drawing with the specs of each part.

Weight in either Lbs or Kg. The weight needs to be the total of the whole not the weight of the explosive charge. I can work with estimates of those figures.

Drawing are better then pics. So if you find some good ones, grab them.

Hi Blood Hawk,

If I can please ask a favor, Do you think it would be possible to make a FFAR (Zuni) rocket for the Alpha F-8 that's in the screenshots. Mine and BC's.

I've removed them off of the Fs9 *.mdl but cannot find a suitable replacement in any CFS2 weapons packs. Alphasim's modern weapons has a Zuni though no rocket itself shows when it is mounted on the rails. (Not modeled in the .bgl)

I've been trying others but they all have fins in the wrong places.
BTW, if possible a fin-less version would be absolutely great.
Marine F-8's are in dire need of ground support ordinance. :untroubled:

I hate to burden you with more. So if time isn't available...no problem. ;-)

Dosen't look to be too hard but I have been wrong. Wiki has the dimeter and length. The only thing I'm not sure about is if length is for with fins out or fins folded.

EDIT:
What Mk and warhead are you wanting? Each seem to have a deffent length. The Alpha F-8 seem to have Mk-71s with Mk-32 Anti Tank HE warheads.

A Mk-24 would be great. General purpose warhead. This Link (http://www.chinalakealumni.org/Downloads/1959%20D149ZUNI%205.0%20FFAR.pdf) has some good info. Dimensions included for warhead length. Overall length would be 1.752 meters from my guesstimate.

Why won't it export? One things is your nomal model and damaged/destryed model must have matching lods. So if your tank uses 100 50 and 25 you must have destryed models that use LOD 100 50 and 25.

Every one.
Here is the Zuni Mk-16 GP. Something looks off to me but I'm not sure why. Includes CFS2 ready and gMax model and related files.

Whoa, that was fast. She looks really good!
I try to never look a gift horse in the mouth but I see what you mean about "Something looks off". Would it be possible to do some, um-mm, how would one say, tweaking? :friendly_wink:

The length looks perfect. But the diameter is large. Proportional maybe? I'm no gmax whiz so don't know how much work is involved.

Here's a pic with zuni and aim-9 next to each other. The aim-9 also has a 5" diameter body, the same as the FFAR.
Just to give an idea...

Thanks, Dv

Allen,

Half your Dia. In Gmax dia is measured from the center. So if your dia is .025m and you used .025m. Then use .0125m and you will have the correct dia.

So in this case the dia is 5" or 0.127m; make it 2.5" or 0.0635m. Other wise you end up with 10" across. I found that out while making my WWI bombs.

As far as the damage model goes... They are both currently at LOD_100. The undamage model will export fine. I haven't been able to compile yet because of that.

Fellas, before we jump into the deep end, I had a thought. (Yes, it does happen to me infrequently.) I loaded up my Flight sim archive HDD and did a little checking. Has anyone else got the Alpha sim modern weapons pack? I do, and before we re-invent the wheel, could someone take a look and seee if any are Vietnam era?

There's amother pack that has evn more, I just have to remember what it's named and I'll dig it out and check it too.

I believe that one is more from the 80's and 90's. Not that some of them couldn't be used.

We would have to check the scale. Also many early weapon packs that were made with FSDS have their scale either too big or too small. Something to think about.

Roger that BH. The other modern pack was done by Bononzie and Chris Coarse, looks like it has everything from about 1960 on. Useable... maybe.

I'm slogging through the manuals, but they all seem to be pre-1967 with addenda through 1970, which means that the realistic, useful data ends about 1968. I'fe isolated the Mk 20 and Rockeye dispensers, so far, continuing from there.

All of the self propelled guns should be finished this week. These are for testing mostly. I'm leaving out the LODs for now. I may revise them in the future. For now I think they look nice. They are around 300 polys so the lack of LODs shouldn't be too much of an Issue.

I have one more M107 and then the 4 M109's. Shouldn't those be M110's. I'll have to do some research.

Damn John,
You are doing some great work.

As far as the M109 vs M110, they were created by Al himself.
He was boots on the ground, I have many stories yet to be
posted on the site.

I am sending him one of my spare copies of CFS2, being he was
only an FS2002, 2004 flyer and designer...but I think he is excited
about his original scenery and extras still being used and improved
today. I will be e-mailing him again shortly...I will take some of your
pics from the below and forward to him.

I, Al and I am sure that all of the veterans of the forgotten war, more
than appreciate what you, Allen, DV and all are helping to to recreate.

Hell, I ran across some FSX scenery that still uses his macros.

Again, Thank you all for your contributions.

They are M110's not M109's. I've looked them both up. Sorry its all wiki.

M109;

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M109_howitzer

M108;

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M108_howitzer

M110;

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M110_howitzer

M107;

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M107_self-propelled_gun

As you can see the M107 and M110 share the same chassis. Like wise with the M108 and M109. You can not mistake the M109 for the M110. Not a big deal. I'll just rename them to match the correct unit. If He did the other two, then please send them over. I'd love to complete the set.

It would be great if he can pop in. You know me and military history. I can't get enough. Any insight would be great.

Those dad-gummed 175s worked on either side of my firebase near Hai Lang up in MR-1. Charlie kept hitting us with his rockets and mortars trying to find those US Army 175s.
They would fire a mission on one side of our FB and then move to a new location before Charlie climbed out of his holes to return fire.
And, they would fire off missions all night long making it hard for a guy to get some sleep!
They would then withdraw to a rear area to sleep during the day and we'd get pounded....

Yes that is a .50 Cal. Why? Because I can.

They are all based off of Al Simms Dhows. I have six that are 20 footers. As well as seven that are 50 footers. The green tops are VC boats. May not be historically accurate. They at least look the part.

Some are suitable for any WWII scenery from India to the Philippines. Though maybe not the one with the 50.

Beautiful stuff, folks! :wavey:

Take a look at this link that our good friend Dave Brauneis, a.k.a. Jagdflieger, sent to me a few days ago. "Spads with a load", I think you will all enjoy it.

He's a Vietnam vet, he wrote me: " I saw 'em in action in Thua Thien Provence during my tour in Vietnam. They were just spectacular and they looked like magnets that had flown over a junkyard because they had so many bombs and rockets hanging from under the wings. Their radio call sign was "Sandy" so we called 'em either Sandys or Spads; the terms were interchangeable. They used the Wright R-3500 radial engine and it just shook the sky with its power. It was truly music of the most inspiring kind. Even Brahms would have enjoyed the big engine's base notes."

if I am correct, this Wednesday was Veteran's Day. Take it as a small homage to all veterans of all wars, a tribute to their sacrifices.

Cheers!

I just realized something the other day. I should have used the Red and Blue with the yellow star for the VC. I used the Red with the Yellow star. Thats for the NVA. Ooops. I'll have the correction later.

I'm working on the T-34/85 now. I'm doing 4 versions. 2 for WWII
First one is Seybolts original
The other is from 1945 Berlin.
Next is for Korea. Its of the Chinese Type 58. If anyone has images of a Chinese Type 58 let me know.
Last one is the NVA Type 58.

Then I have the heavy equiptment to go with the M107 and M110.

So thats whats up for now.

The actual runway width? No.

Use FSSC or groundmaker to due a new one.

In the airbase.dat you can adjust the number of ACs lined up accross. I think you already knew that.

John,
I ended up using Martins MKAFD2 program, it allows sizing of the runways

I used the CFS1 runway texture and then modified it, worked out great.

Now maybe I can get back to work on the rest of Khe Sahn.........

I think I went a little over board with the T-34/85s. Do you remember how I said I was doing 5 models with different paints for the T-34/85s?

Well forget about that number. I've done 21 versions. Technically they are all the same model. Here is what I have finised...

Russia - T-34/85 Model 1944's

"T3485_RU"=Soviet T-34/85 "CYBOBOP" ---- This is Seybolts original texture
"T3485_RU1"=Soviet T-34/85 Model 1944 ---- Plain Texture
"T3485_RU1-lt"=Soviet T-34/85 (Turret Left) ---- Plain Texture with Turret turned left 45deg.
"T3485_RU1-rt"=Soviet T-34/85 (Turret Right) ---- Plain Texture with Turret turned right 45deg.
"T3485_RU2"=Soviet T-34/85 Berlin "CYBOBOP" ---- Late war Berlin Texture
"T3485_RU3"=Soviet T-34/85 Berlin "k339" ---- Another late war Texture
"T3485_RU4"=Soviet T-34/85 Berlin ---- Semi-plain Texture with marks on roof to prevent friendly from Allied ACs.
"T3485_RU4-lt"=Soviet T-34/85 Berlin (Turret Left) ---- Same, turret left 45deg.
"T3485_RU4-rt"=Soviet T-34/85 Berlin (Turret Right) ---- Also the same texture, turret is right 45deg

China - Type 58; Chinese made T-34/85s

"Type58_CN"= Chinese Type 58 "008" ---- As it says. Not sure about the history of this tank.
"Type58_CN2"=Chinese Type 58 1950 ---- Less markings in the texture.
"Type58_CN2-lt"=Chinese Type 58 (Turret Left) ---- Same as the other, has the turret facing left 45deg.
"Type58_CN2-rt"=Chinese Type 58 (Turret Right) ---- Again, same texture but has turret facing right 45deg.

North Korea - Type 58; Chinese built T-34/85s

"Type58_NK"=North Korean Type 58 "215" Seoul ---- North Korean Type 58 that was abandoned after leaving Seoul.
"Type58_NK2"=North Korean Type 58 ---- Plain texture in the same color.
"Type58_NK2-lt"=North Korean Type 58 (Turret Left) ---- Plain texture in the same color except turret is turned left 45deg.
"Type58_NK2-rt"=North Korean Type 58 (Turret Right)---- Plain texture in the same color except turret is turned right 45deg.

North Vietnam - Type 58; Chinese built T-34/85s

"Type58_VN"=North Vietnamese Type 58 1968 ---- For use in the Tet Offencive.
"Type58_VN2"=North Vietnamese Type 58 ---- Has less markings then the other texture.
"Type58_VN2-lt"=North Vietnamese Type 58 (Turret Left) ---- Same texture, turret is turned left 45deg.
"Type58_VN2-rt"=North Vietnamese Type 58 (Turret Right) ---- Same as the other, turrent is turned right 45 deg.

So as you can see I went a little wild with the textures. I'll post pics once I start to test them all.

Hello anyone,
Question about DP files for Library objects. As I slowly learn to add GSL scenery to my sceneries for Vietnam
I have one odd question.( most likely a stupid one)

Vietnam is set up for USArmy=1, USNavy=2, NVA=3

I notice many of the Library objects by Wolfi and others have allegiance=0

Should I change these, such as Warehouses, to one of the above...or will the pilot in a mission still get credit
for hitting an allegiance=0 target in a mission.

I am just a simple mud pusher from Mississippi, so please do not laugh really hard out loud.

Much appreciated,

Hi Dave,

with the size of the Vietnam Project you churned out I wouldn't call you a "simple mud pusher from Mississippi".... My philosophy tells me there's always something new to learn, every day of our lives, so there are no stupid questions. Just questions.

I remember seeing stock objects with the allegiance= set to 0 as well. I always got credit for anything I was able to hit in CFS2.

Therefore I would tend to think there shouldn't be a problem with that. Allegiance assignments have a purpose when any given object is armed and will fire on you, such as a AA gun, if you don't belong to its allegiance group.
Warehouses, houses, hangars and so on cannot fire back.

I kept the Chassis and Turret as they looked fine. I made a new gun barrel, hull mg, 5 external fuel tanks (can't see them all in this pic), copula and antenna on the turret. Also not seen in these pics are the LODs.

I'm going to remove some of the external tanks for each different model.

The Chinese built the Type 58. It was in fact the License built T-34/85. The Chinese changed nothing from the Russian versions. It had the same strengths and weaknesses as its Russian counter part.

It was used during the Korean War by both the North Koreans and the Chinese.

China gave the North Vietnamese some Type 58. These were used during the Tet offensive and after the US pulled out from the South.

They were in other conflicts as well. I'm only covering those three.

I'm doing 9 version of the T-34/85. Three of them are meant as lead tanks. I'll mix and match some of the parts and move the turret to different positions to give them some life.

Here it is the whole time that I thought the rear two canisters were fuel tanks. Well they are not. They are BDSh smoke canisters. At least thats what I've been able to find out. So I had to change my approach with them.

Should I leave them on with the damage model or not? I'll have to think about it.

I also noticed that the one of the side tanks is in the way of the turret when turned 45 degrees. Ooops...

FINALLY...

I'm finished. I hope...

Twenty one models with eight different damage models. All are Multi_LOD. They have twelve different textures as well. I've added the external fuel tanks, plus the smoke canisters. They are mixed and matched, with some having both the fuel tanks and canisters, and some that just have the fuel tanks.

Captain Kurt is working on a new DP file to go with the T-34/85s. Once thats finished I can get them ready to be sent out.

So, I went from a simple little API conversion, to a full blown rebuild. It was fun and now I'm ready to wrap it up.

I have them ready for testing if anyone wants to set them up for a strafing run.

How big were the Revetments for the C130s. Where there standard sizes. I having trouble getting all of the information.

Here is what I've found so far.

"Revetments: length 167 mm, depth 22 mm, height 50 mm - a scale 40 feet long, 5 feet thick and 12 feet high"

That came from a model site.

dvslats
December 10th, 2015, 14:57
That's a good question Blood Hawk.
The revetments were modular, so they could be built to any size.
.
Taking the F-4 dimensions and guesstimating clearance from tail back/wing tips to sides I'm seeing about,

Width = 65 ft.
Depth = 72 ft. Both from the inside.

Also there is a scenery by George Knowles for FS2002 that has revetments represented. API
Ubon (http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/syb2.cgi?section=scenery&file=UbonRTAFB.zip)

It will load in CFS2, but stutters like crazy. Maybe seeing these might help?

You are ohhh so correct Dave. I was just thinking along the lines of a reference (visual) of the revetments plus there are textures in the zip of them.
This base otherwise is totally unstable for CFS2. :peaceful:

On the subject of the VooDoo, I'm in the process of converting. Conversion, Panel and DP are done.
Just for sh*ts and grins, next little addition is a after-burner fx file with the GreenGhost gauge.

I found the measurements. 12' x 10' sections. so about 75'-90' x 50' seems to be the average for the fighters. the larger ACs depended on the Base. any where from 90'-120'.

75ft deep x 50ft wide
75ft deep x 90ft wide
90ft deep x 115ft wide
90ft deep x 130ft wide
120ft deep x 120ft wide

So I'll do a few with Concrete, dirt and gravel. They'll be about 5' thick.

AC-47 had the gun mounts both ways. Some had all guns firing through the windows some had 2 in the windows and 1 in the cargo door. Some had the gunpod field mounts, some had purpose designed mounts. Google "AC-47 images" and you 'll see what I mean.

Allen,

I thought one was suppose to shoot out the door?

Can. I have seen #1 2 guns in the back windows. #2 3 guns in the back window. #3 2 guns in the back windows and 1 in the door. #4 2 guns in the back windows and 1 gun put behind the doors with a hole cut for the barrels.

Also seen 2 types of gun pods. I went with the one that I could get a good pic of.

Not much to report on the AC-47. All that I got done was getting the Fixed Windows to be toggle-able. This mean when you hit the Collective Display Toggle on the panel you will be looking out the left window with out having to hold the look left button on your stick/keyboard.

32707

Soon as you hit any of your other view buttons it will take you back to the main panel.

Edit for Info.

Thanks to CFS2 poor bullet tracking the AC-47 must be flown at 1,500 feet above the target at 30-degrees. Any more Alt and bullet tracking become vary poor. I can see the tracers all over the area (Chase view of the object I'm shooting at) but no hits on the ground or target. At 1,500 above the target I can see the object get hit and sparks fly off but ground don't show it was hit by gunfire.

Already tired the DPs bullet tracking. It had no effect. I'm sure that the player or AI aircraft has to be with in a set destance before the game loads the DP for an object. Seen this when I tried to make Zeppelins in CFS2. My bullets would fly right throught them tell I got close.

Allen, is the 1500ft due to Time of Flight (2 secs)?

Maybe you could fake it (like with the HAA) by increasing the MV so the round Time of Flight is 2 secs from the altitude you would normally operate from?

Hope this helps.

Allen
December 12th, 2015, 14:26
Had that same idea that the game would forget the bullets before they hit the ground but the guns Muzzle velocity is 2,800 ft/sec (853 m/s). I have the DP set to track bullets for 7 secs.

The real AC-47 flew at 3,000 feet above the target at 30-degrees left hand turn at 124 knots. At 3,000 feet and 30-degrees left the bullet travel time is 2.1+ secs to ground. Using the DPs bullet tracking of 7 secs should be just fine when you only need to track it for 3 sec.

I didn't try your idea of making the bullet super fast but I'm really think that the player or AI aircraft has to be with in a set distance before the game loads the DP for the object/aircraft. I could also try moving the guns away from the aircraft and see if that will make the game see the bullets as hits.

Hi Allen,

I remember reading somewhere that the sim is hard-coded to calculate each rounds path for 2 secs. Adjusting the MV makes Flak Cannons reach out to their proper engagement ranges/altitudes, figured it would be the same for MG & cannons too.

Allen
December 12th, 2015, 16:23
Damm I'm I good.

I just moved the guns 700, 600 and 500 metters away from the aircraft. Now at 3,000 feet (914 meters) and things work like a charm.

but UncleTgt genus!

Tripling muzzle velocity and it works even better.

UncleTgt
Never knew that and didn't see that when I re-programed the CFS Large AAA gun to be a Flak 88 but maybe is muzzle velocity is fast enough so I never saw this.

Double posting!

I'm putting up the AC-47 as I have it now for testing/tweeking. It is mostly done. Test lacks the gauges but it uses may stock gauges and the others it uses you should have if you have all of The B24 Guys OHs installed.

32769

As you can see I edited the fixed window to have some basic gauges. I find the useful so you don't find you self too low or high and lets you fly only using the side view.

Yeah, back in the early days when certain designers were cranking out x-planes in CFS2 for giggles, one could program the guns as lasers using this technique. By quadrupling the MV, range and tracer count, a short MG or cannon burst can be made to look like a straight laser beam without the normal gravitational drop effect of conventional guns.

Your welcome.

For the new year, I'm looking into the Horses and the Pigs you sent me.

I'm thinking of some WWI and WWII Mounted Cav for the horses. As well as some pulling wagons and carring packs. Might try to turn a horse into a mule. We'll see how far I get.

For now I'll work on a strait up conversion of the APIs. If I don't have to redo the models it should go fast.

I'll make Euro/American and Asian versions of the Pigs. They will work well for some Helo missions.

The Deer is Kool but might not work for any war missions. It might work for other things. I'll do a strait conversion of those. Same with the Cow.

So thats the Plan. I hope everyone stays safe over the Holidays.

'til Later,
