As you can see it does have a VC , obviously not quite up todays standard but overall an excellent job by Vladimir Zhyhulskiy .

Well worth the download at flightsim.com and fun to fly .

I have finnished up on the masters or so I thought, I was just working on the readmes when I realised that because the model I have been working on, the B model, I had completely forgotten about the jato engines on the K models :banghead:. I will rectify this tonight and upload the first few paints tommorow.

Yes, this US Coast Guard repaint is excellent Steve! I find that Banana Bob's prop for Vladimir's AN2 Colt works well, even if the C-123 has 3-bladed props, the 4-blade setip looks fine to me.

Nice piccies Mike, it is nice too see piccies from someone elses sim rather than just my own :d. It's a shame theres only one texture for both the wing bottoms, it makes it difficult to be accurate. But apart from that it's not too dificult too paint overall. Talking of which I have just uploaded the SEA cammo scheme paint.

Thank you, Steve. Real nice. For what it's worth the USAF SEA cammo C-123K call sign was "Booky", as in "Booky 238". I was an USAF air traffic controller in county 1962 and 1970/71. Nha Trang Tower, Thy Hoa Tower and Danang Tower. I've downloaded all your C-123's except the Black Sp Ops 123, Can't find it, yet. These Sp Ops guy's flew out of Danang in 1970/71. One day some AF guy was out near the runway, (17L) taking photo's of one of the "Black Bird's and the pilot radioed us and ask us to call the Air Police and, "get that guys film" ! Which we did and wached the film retreval. That Black Bird pilot was not a happy camper. I know what their mission was but can't state it as it might be still classified. All I'll say it was defenitly some black ops stuff. Anyway, keep up the great work.

The avatar depicts the Lionheart Epic. Available for both Fs9 and FSX. As to the paint its available to all TVA members. Check out the CG forum at Transload, link to the texture is in the thread TVACG Epic (payware) paint Realeased. As to the Pilatus i have a TVA one for the flight1 model both sims. Thanks for the repaints. It is a nice mix of military and civil users worldwide.

I posted a fix for the high reference speeds a while back. Turns out the numbers I used were to slow. These ones fit the speeds in the menu screen:
[Reference Speeds]

full_flaps_stall_speed=70.000000
cruise_speed=170.000
max_indicated_speed=240
max_mach=0.362828

There was a fix for the vc night lighting posted here when the plane was just released. It was lost in the server crash but I kept a copy:
[LIGHTS]
//Types: 1=beacon, 2=strobe, 3=navigation, 4=cockpit
// class long lat vert effect

The earlier photos are pre-guard and has "Alaskan Air Command" on the fuse, then after the early/mid 70's, went to "Alaska Air Guard"....in addition to some minor color changes (and prob. tail insignia).

Just thought it was neat to note the subtleties.

OK, I did some quick research.

The SAC sash, when present, went on the port side, with the unit badge on the starboard.

Sometimes there were no badges on either side, just the sash, and that seems to be the way it was on this C-123.

Hi all:

I am having to cruise this bird at 170 KIAS to prevent flying with a nose high attitude. The readme file say it's cruise speed is 170 MPH. When I fly it straight and level at that speed (149 KIAS) the nose is too high. I'm trying it now with an edit to the aircraft.cfg file in the [WEIGHT_AND_BALANCE] section to read as follows:

empty_weight_CG_position=10,0,0

This nearly levels it out. Anyone else notice this condition, or toy with a fix for it? (Made this change early in a long cross-country flight, so haven't tried to land or taxi it since. Don't know how much those procedures will be effected.)

... I will be working on the SAC over the next few days.
Steve

A correction to my earlier note, where I wrote that the SAC sash, when present. went on the port side...

The sash was on both sides. What I meant was that the SAC emblem went on the left and the unit (usually wing) badge went on the right, both superimposed on the sash.

But you probably knew what I meant...

So this bird apparently had just the sash on both sides, and no emblems.

This has really renewed my interest in this aircraft. I've given mine some cfg changes and modded the cockpit instruments to suit my tastes and get rid of all the duplicate instruments. Seems the only major issue remaining is that the landing lights are not visible when in the virtual cockpit. I kind of doubt that I'll be able to fix that one.

Trans_1007, I was thinking the same thing. Between this and the Convair 240 from CalClassics with the Freight Dog paint scheme, some serious flying could be done. Now where's my copy of Steve Stills' song "Tree Top Flier"? :ernae:

Still at it, I see...

I've been busy too.

I've done an Air Force Reserve bird at two stages of its career, first in silver paint, then the same plane some years later in overall Aircraft Gray (aka "ADC Gray.") I think that overall Aircraft Gray livery makes any plane look good.

I've also re-done my Air America textures that I first released right after the C-123 was released. Those were OK, but they weren't reflective and the looked like silver paint, not bare metal. In those days I didn't know how to enable reflective textures in a model that didn't come that way. The new version is reflective. Alas, by using the alpha channel for reflectivity, I could no longer use it to make the wing tanks disappear, and it seems that AA never used the wing tanks. The polished metal look is worth it, though.

I've also done that SAC bird in reflective natural metal, a natural metal TAC assault transport, and an air assault tanker in a nice white and silver paint livery with orange and black trim.

I thought I was gong to start packing them up for release today, but at the last minute I thought of a way to enhance the bare metal schemes, so I'm starting them over, partly. It's that delightful task of changing the base colors without changing the markings on top pf them. Thank goodness for layers...

Might be able to release this evening, but another day or two is probably more realistic.

Here are the ones that are finished (I think. I hope...)

Mick
October 29th, 2008, 18:35
OK, this here one just went up the pipe.

Air America converted their C-123Bs to Ks, so this paint is right for both versions.

I painted this plane way back when Vlad first released it, but in those days I didn't know how to enable reflections in a model, so the repaint looked more like silver paint than bare metal.

Now it looks like shiny natural metal, but since the alpha channel now controls reflections, I could no longer use it to disappear the wing tanks, which AA apparently never used.

I like the shiny finish enough to accept the drop tanks.

'Nother one just went up.

This is an Air Force Reserve bird in the overall Aircraft Gray (aka "ADC Gray") livery it wore at the end of its service life. When it was painted the rudder and elevators were left silver.

Later I'll be uploading another paint of the same plane with the same markings over an overall silver paint livery. The photos I worked from were taken from the exact same angle and at a glance they look like two copies of one shot. Closer examination shows that in one picture the plane is painted silver, and the background in the flight line of an active Air Force Base. In the other picture the plane's painted Aircraft Gray except for the tail feathers, and the background shows the bone yard, with stripped out hulks standing in the sand.

I've always liked that overall Aircraft Gray livery. I think it makes any plane look its best.

Here's a screenie of the repaint and a copy of the photo.

Mick
October 29th, 2008, 20:12

[quote=Trans_1007;25670]Mine throw crates, So were do i get the paratrooper effect?[/quote

My effects came from everywhere, and I can't begin to recall where I got any particular one.

Most came with various planes but some were released by themselves.

At least one of my paratrooper effects is sized and located for a Ju.52, so maybe it came with that great Ju.52 by Oscar Fischer, but I'm not sure. I seem to recall some smoke jumper effects coming with either models or paints of borate bombers, perhaps a DHC-6 Twotter...???

If you go to FlightSim and search FS2004 Misc section for "effect" you'll come up with some good stuff. Also search the FS2002 Misc section.

One paratrooper file is named para.zip It's a rectangular chute.

Two others at FlightSim are 82ab-fx.zip and 82abd-fx.zip by Heather Sherman; they're round chutes paratroopers in green camo uniforms and desert camo uniforms.

Also by Heather at FlightSim is smkjmp.zip, which is smoke jumpers, just what we need for the firefighting paint.

Look around the download sites and you'll find stuff to push out of that rear ramp...

One question on the C-123 is if it is at all possible to get a truly polished finshed with this latest version.
I have been trying every trick that I am aware off and it just isn't happening.
I know that Heather made a polished repaint on an earlier version, but maybe something has been changed on the current versions model that makes that impossible.

One question on the C-123 is if it is at all possible to get a truly polished finish with this latest version...

It's not the paints and it's not the model, it's FS9.

One particular file, envmap.bmp, determines how reflections look in the sim, and with the stock one they don't look very reflective at all. More than several replacement envmap.bmp files have been released, either packaged with other scenery tidbits or as stand-alone items.

Banana Bob Rivera recently released one that produces an almost mirror finish on most reflective textures. I found that it made some of my older reflective paints look too mirror-like, so I went with another one. I can't recall which one...

Go to the big sites like AvSim and FlightSim and search the libraries for envmap.bmp and you'll find several to experiment with. Which one looks best will depend on things like your graphics card and your personal preferences. Try several and you're bound to get one you like.

BTW, my SAC and TAC C-123 paints are highly reflective in my sim with the enhanced envmap file I'm using, and I don't think they'd be very reflective at all with the stock FS9 file.

Hi Mick,

thanks for the reply. I am aware of the basic function of the envmap.bmp and I have reflections on quite a few repaints...including some of my own creations.
But with the latest version of the C-123 when I apply the usual grey scale alpha layer which is what normally generates the "chrome" effect the texture becomes more and more transparent.

A solid black alpha layer which is what generates normally a perfectly polished finish without any trace of texture left on this model removes the outer skin entirely and you are left with all the interior in plain sight.

Since for example the recently metioned L-10A Electra in TransCanada Colors shows up nice and polished I am positive that it's not my card, the settings or the envmap.bmp file.

Just for kicks however I have tried a couple different envmap versions and the result is the same.
I am pretty sure that this is in fact something that has to be planned for in the 3D modeling phase of the airplane...or the texturing.
I am not sure which since I have never or not yet dabbled in that part of the hobby.

I have also tried this in FSRepaint, shich handles the reflection a bit differently and get the same result.

Can you let me know where to find your SAC or TAC repaints so I can possibly take a look if they will work for me as well ???

Thanks
Stefan

Hi Steve, your work is great.

My english is very bad and I find it hard to understand everything.

For me, the roundel of the C-123 Royal Thai Air Force has not the right colors.

Super! This will be just perfect for exploring Lao PDR!

Also, not totally fictional, since LPLAAF did use some ex-RLAF C-123 for a time after the war.

The reflection is based somewhere in the model as I had thought.
If you want to try for yourself apply the TAC or SAC textures to the
model with the jet assist engines....AA or FAV for example.

And you will see that the fuselage will become transparent...which is a neat effect :costumes:
On the model without the jet assist pods (model folder was part of the SAC and TAC paint zips) my own repaint shows up nice and shiny as well.

Cheers

As for the model shine, out of the box the C123K comes with both matt finnish and high gloss finnish, if you want the paint too appear on the the High Gloss then make sure your aircraft config entry has model= (leave blank). If you want the non shine finnish make model=US on the aircraft config.

You must be using Vlad's original model file, which does not have reflections enabled.

You can make a reflective model with Ivan Hsu's "Shine" program, or with Jeff D's "Shiny," which is Ivan's "Shine" with a Window's interface. (The original "Shine" is a DOS command line program.) Both "Shine" and "Shiny" are available in the library here at SOH.

Or you could download my SAC or TAC paints and use the reflective model that's packaged with them.

(I also made a model with specular shine; if you need that you can get it with my AFRES Gray paint.)

Ah ha!!!

I've been wondering whether there was any difference between the two K model files! I'd somehow not noticed that one is glossy and the other is flat. I went and made a glossy (or was it flat?) copy when I already had one!

I thought the two model files must account for some difference like the presence of absence of some aerial, or something like that. It never dawned on me that the difference might be the finish of the plane in the sim. Not too swift, since I've been making different copies of the model for exactly that purpose...

I dont think I have an origional model left in my C123 folder lol, I changed the non gloss finnish to a satin finnish for the cammo schemes using the shiney util and I tried to tone down the full gloss model down a notch as well. :d

But out of the box from Vlad the easiest way to tell the difference is barrels in the back= gloss, Jeep in the back= matt.

Hi Mick,

I got your SAC and TAC repaints and they do work ...but I have a strange black panel behind the gauges in the VC with the model.br
Do you get that as well or am I missing something else ???

I tried a Google search for the Shiny program you mentioned but it returned way too many results to comb through.

Do you have a link by any chance to the program with the Windows interface ???

Thanks for any help in advance.

I don't get a black panel behind the gages, I get a shiny panel behind them. It can't be helped, as far as I know. It seems to be an effect of making a model reflective that wasn't built that way. This doesn't happen at all on some models; on some models it puts the reflective panel in front of the gages, making the VC completely un-usable. On this model it's sort of in between. There may be a way to fix it, but if so, I don't know how.

Odd that the effect is different in your system and mine. I suppose that might have something to do with different video cards...?

I took a flight in one of the reflective paints and found the effect annoying, but less so than I expected. Still, the reflective paints might end up being used mainly in the AI role, where they are already decorating a few bases in my Flight Simulator 1954 - A Half Century of Flight AI scheme.

I don't have a direct link, but you can find "Shiny" right here at SOH, in the FS2004 Utilities section.

Thanks Mick,

I'll search for it here then. The even more odd thing is that my pal in NZ using the same model doesn't get any black boxes with that same model.

I will play around with it some and see what happens. I'll probably switch back to the non reflective as well for non-AI use.
