The Feb 14 1943 mission to Kahilli dubbed The St Valentines Day Massacre, done a few searches and get a lot of conflicting information and few details. Were escorting Army B 24 or Navy PB4Y ? 12 F4U , 10 P38 , were any P40 present ? Did not know they could make that trip. How many Zeros attacked ? What was the target ? Kahili Airfield or ?

Source(s)? Just curious. Also, any suggestions for a suitable PB4Y for building a mission? I had the 1% but it has twin tails and P4BY had a single rudder I believe. Downloaded the KM version but it was for not for CFS 2, is there a CFS 2 version?

The PB4Y-1 have Twin Tails like the B-24. PB4Y-1 can be B-24Ds or have a ball like nose turret (none of these ball nose turret where used on Army Air Force B-24s). The PB4Y-2 is the single taill model and has the ball like nose turret and is fitted with side blister gun ports

Target was shipping in Buin - Shortlands area. Some cargo ships were hit including the Hitachi Maru and near misses on 2 others.

Allied losses 10 planes including

2-PB4Y-1's

4-P-38's

2-F4U's

Don't know what the other 2 were.

Expanding on what I posted before. Wiki say that the single tail PB4Y-2 was used tell late 1944. So the PB4Ys have to be twin tail PB4Y-1s (B-24s). Wiki also says that the ERCO nose ball turret wasn't fitted tell mid 1943 would would make since as that was the time that Army B-24s started being fited in large numbers with turrets in the nose.

This leads me to think that the PB4Y where just Naval colored B-24Ds for your mission.

EDIT: They where Navy B-24Ds. Pacific wrecks list one of the B-24s from the mission. It was build as a Army B-24D.

Link for another from the same mission. Same story, build as a Army B-24D.

Thanks. Other two were P-40's possible? Pacific Wrecks page mentioned P-40's.However, I was under impression P-40's in service at that point could not make such a trip or the ones at Guadalcanal anyways.

Thanks.I had read over Pacificwrecks as part of research.Just gets confusing when one source says B-24's then other says PB4Y.

PB4Y-1 are B-24s with navy paint. Even the later ERCO nose ball turret PB4Y-1s are B-24s. They are much the same as the B-24G (made by North American),B-24H (made by Consolidated, Douglas and Ford) and B-24J (made by all plants). From I what I recall the Navy used the ERCO nose ball turret as it could aim it self down to shoot at ships much more than any of the others that the Army was using for the G,H, or Js models.

This also may help you.

No P-40's on that mission,only F4U's and P-38's

The P-40 did escort to Buin on Febuary 13,1943.With drop tanks they had the range.

The Solomons 43 Campaign actually has 4 campaigns in it.

1- P-40 campaign

2- P-38 campaign

3- F4U campaign

4 - SBD campaign.

Very good campaigns

Look at Simviation for KMalinowskis PB4Y if you want the later model with the ERCO nose turret.

http://simviation.com/1/browse-CFS2+-3-93

Navy PB4Ys in the PTO carried Olive Drab/ Grey paint until the very end of 1943, when the first tricolour camo aircraft entered the Central Pacific.

Also don't forget to get Oglivie's mdl & airfile fixes here at SOH

tyre fix

For the St Valentine's Day mission I would just use standard Olive Drab B24D with the 1942-3 roundels (no bars)

Reminds me to get of my asterisk and convert "my" B-24J to a Navy ERCO nose turret BP4Y-1....

Work on the PB4Y-1 ERCO nose turret. Main LOD is the only one done. Texture is a basic Tri color. Not sure if it quite right. Texture is unchanged from the B-24J so if any one wants to pick up a brush they can get a head start.

Nicely done Allen,

Must break out your B24J paintkit...

Any chance of other B24 models? Like a B24A, or the LB30?

Allen, i have another idea along the lines of UncleTgt's post.

How about making a PB4Y-2 Privateer?

A new entry has been added to Add-Ons Library, category CFS 2 Aircraft - American

Description: This rebuild of the stock B-24D Liberator converts the Liberator to a Navy PB4Y-1 with a ERCO ball nose turret. The B24Guy was kind enough to let me use the OverHauled B-24D turrets and Virtual Cockpit. Come with most of the bells and whistles like animated parts and breaking parts. Model is Multi LOD use damage texture logics as well.

Comes with 2 textures (Navy TriColor and Navy Gray and White) Skin templates are included in the textue folders for your painting pleasure. You will need a program that can read .PSD to use them.

I seem to find next nothing on what changes would be need to go from a B-24D back to the B-24A or LB-30.

Allen:

Check this link. It details the changes to each model. This should tell you what you need to know and whether or not you want to tackle the reverse engineering.

Wonderful work. the Navy really liked these planes and gave them the best support they could. They had wanted to have more muscle in the air but Army was determined to keep control of the air as much as they could well done Allen!

I love the Gray and White scheme, which will be great for those long, tiresome yet vital Atlantic Ocean patrol missions, hunting U-boots.

I already loaded mine with aerial depth charges!

Cheers!

Hi Allen,
It seems to me that the ERCO turret You installed in the PB4Y-1 needs just a little rescaling, sorry, but I always loved this plane exactly for the original shape of the ERCO turret.....

I'm not sure what is wrong. I know when the first converts where done to glass nose PB4Ys/B-24Ds the nose's bomb sight area wasn't standardized but after the J it for the most part was. The later Navy ERCO's should have just been a turret swap done from my understanding.

Hi Allen,
I think a "generous" rescaling will be enough for Your ERCO turret appearance.....
Take a look at the Malinowsky's model, its nose shape seems correct to me.....

It may be under sized but resized it would mean re-doing the whole nose (model and texture times 3 thanks to LOD.) If I'm going to put that much time into the model it would be to put the B-24J nose turret onto the tail as the current model dosn't really have a turret on the back for both B-24J and PB4Y.

Any painters willing to do a paint job ? Need the "white on blue star roundels" on the sides. The wing roundels can be added easily be replacing the texture in the texture folder, just need for the sides. Using the light grey scheme for early 1943 mission against Bougainville.Thanks.

Dasuto,

Grey over White was Atlantic units only.

VB-101 first tour was with PB4Y-1 (early, no nose turret). Olive Drab over Grey. Use the OH B-24D.
VB-102 was the first unit to bring PB4Y-1 nose turret to the SWPTO. Again, Olive Drab over Green.
