FSX SP2/Accel - why does the smoke cause these boxy images?? (It is absolutely heaven on earth otherwise . .)

That's a missing texture. Check you've got all the effects installed properly, would be my first suggestion.

Cheers,

Ian P.

Copy that - thanks Ian.

The Solomons scenery is excellent. Also using Shade and FTX Global and Vector.

Seems to be a missing effect texture, as said above.
Downloads are in my signature - be sure to get the update, which fixes a few things and adds some goodies.

Cheers,
Mark

Thanks Mark. Your work is special and much appreciated. Once I go back flying there I end up not leaving for a long time! Right now adding some parking in various spots and adding some USN and IJN custom AI flights. Will try some water airports to support the PBY base on Tulagi.

OK, checked and believe I have the latest v2 2013 updates; reloaded twice a long list of effects and related textures. Could this be because I have just installed FTX Global and Vector??
It is quite dramatic I have to say . . but not what its brilliant author intended I expect . .

Hehe, thanks!

I'll have to check which effect texture file that is. Where is that location, somewhere on Bougainville, I presume?

--> found it. I think it is the c-fsx-black-smoke.bmp , which should reside in the effects\texture folder. Holy moly, an error in the installation file! The folder should read "texture", not "textures"! So if you now have two folders under fsx\effects, one which goes by the name of texture (default) and another named textures (erranous), copy the files from textures to texture and delete the misnamed textures folder. Best to do that while the sim is not running.

Could you report back if it worked? Sorry for the inconvenience.

Cheers,
Mark

It is not FTX nor Shade (did A-B tests). Not a problem at a distance so maybe a LOD issue??

Did you also check the /effects/texture/ folder issue?
If the effect texture files are not within the default /effects/texture folder all the large scale smoke effects will show like they do on your screen shot. Also the large Tarvurvur volcano smoke plume at Rabaul will be corrupted.

FTX or shade should be no problem. The effect looks normal on my machine, on FSX as well as P3D up to the newest version.

It's a missing texture file. Sometimes an uninstall removes default effect files and the associated texture files.
Try a FSX repair or this (http://www.rikoooo.com/en/downloads/viewdownload/8-divers/256-gauges-recovery-pour-fsx-v12)

Thanks all for the good suggestions - been in the air all day flying to DC but will try out these remedies on my return to England tomorrow.

That was it - all sorted now + many thanks.

Hi Paul,

the links are at the bottom of this post in my signature:

Solomon 1943 V2 update 2013-02-05 download: http://www.sim-outhouse.net/download...2013-02-05.zip

I have to re-upload it though, with the fixed texture folder that causes the problem mentioned above.

Mark

I'm wondering if this new Solomon Islands freeware package by Emerald Scenery Design (still a work in progress) is compatible with Mark's 1943 version?

Unfortunately, since I don't have FTX Vector, there is a lot of issues with the coastline. Is there a freeware alternative for this area? I couldn't check Mark's V2 version since the download link is dead... Is it mirrored somewhere else?

Hi,

unfortunatly it is not compatible. The 1943 version has a 30m mesh (the aforementioned product has 76m) in most areas, and is a mix of hand painted photoreal airfields and classic landclass based scenery on the islands, as well as AFCAD based airfields. There are also complete photoreal parts (e.g. Florida Islands, Rabaul). The airfields are matched to the surrounding scenery and the custom elevation model - I'm pretty sure that this will conflict with the other product.
Maybe things could be matched if only the photoreal part of the "other" scenery is employed - but there will be visual caveats.

The link to the V2 is indeed dead, thanks for the notice. I will upload the V2 tonight to SOH!

Cheers,
Mark

Hi,

the DL link for the base package has been updated with a new loacation, it is

www.sim-outhouse.net/downloads/solomonislands/Solomon-1943-V2.zip

My signature also has the new address. The error in the base package that caused the blocky effect textures has been corrected.

Coyotte, the link to the scenery development galleries in my sig is working. Do you get a permanent error?

Best,
Mark
