I like the choice in panel, as it represents one of the last Lockheed 10's that has been flying up until recent years - in particular, the Canadian-based CF-TCC: http://www.airliners.net/photo/Trans-Canada-Air-Lines/Lockheed-10A-Electra/0175492/L/ And the modern instrumentation/navigational aids will allow the user to get the most out of the airplane, flying in a virtual world that represents the modern day. The AH F3F also has modern elements in the cockpit matching the modern reproductions that fly today.

The only example currently flying, owned by BATA Shoe, was recently completed in the US, and will soon be flying to the Czech Republic where its owner is based. This very aircraft was actually originally purchased brand new by BATA in 1936. As seen in this video while it was still undergoing restoration, it too has a very modern panel and cockpit cabin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zzPTopBU43w another video/article about the aircraft: http://www.thespec.com/news-story/5574822-last-flying-electra-10-lands-at-warplane-heritage-for-maintenance/

Fred Patterson's Lockheed 10E, N72GT, which was used in the recreation of Amelia Earhart's around the world flight in 1997, was retired to permanent static display in 2013, at the Museum of Flight in Seattle. Here is some beautiful air-to-air footage from its very last flight, flying over Seattle: https://vimeo.com/75649616 Here are a couple photos of the cockpit on this example (a beautiful mixture of old and new): https://www.flickr.com/photos/kaiserjp/9902864973/ and http://s270.photobucket.com/user/locoboy1969/media/ChamaMay09042.jpg.html and some more here: http://www.flickriver.com/photos/tags/n72gt/interesting/ I love the look of those full-circle wheels, and pilots that fly these old aircraft love them too, for the extra leverage they provide.

Looking forward to following this project, Baz!

Here are some comments by a couple pilots that have flown Lockheed 10's, as stated at the WIX forum:

"Got to fly right seat a few times. It was like herding a small building around. Make a roll input and count off several seconds for the roll to start then opposite input to halt the roll. Pitch wasn't too bad, not as slow as roll. If you kept your feet on the rudders a bit hard, you would induce a bit of snaking about. Control harmony was not a priority when designed. Sight picture from the cockpit is like a DC-3, but not as high up. It was fun to take to shows even though a lot of work."

"I was expecting it to be nimble but she definitely handled more like a transport category aircraft, slower on the controls but without the mass and momentum aspect of the larger transport birds. Still quite a lot of fun for sure."

Furthermore, here is some on-board footage of the BATA Lockheed 10A: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dw-LrBrNS3A

To be absolutely honest the modern stuff is for ... something else and just needed testing ( lets keep that information just between us :encouragement: ). We're likely to use a mash up between N27GT ( pretty much exactly as we have a fair amount of reference for that one .. Thx Bomber for more, we collect reference! ) and the canadian CF-TCC. erring on the side of old school rather than new school. The main thing however is how much fun we're having not having to worry about MFDS/PFDS/FMC/SIDS/STARS/TCAS/LIDARS/ACRO/NYM.

The BATA Lockheed 10A is currently on its way from Canada to its new home in the Czech Republic. It overflew Greenland a couple days ago (now currently residing on Greenland's east coast, awaiting the next leg of the flight across the Atlantic), and here are some of the spectacular photos shared by the crew involved:

Yep, I'm all in for an Electra. I love the planes of historical importance for those occasions the little man shows his interest in aviation. Makes for a nice impromptu history lesson.

But a slightly modernized cockpit such as the pics above would be a nice touch.

Very difficult to please all the people all of the time. As usual, we have gone for a balanced mix of entertainment value, useability and variety. We have already been asked by many if it will have a GPS. Others have requested full navigation on NAV1 and 2 etc. We think and hope obviously, we have got the balance right in this cockpit but as with all our products, the Electra will have a patch and upgrade path and if necessary things can always change. But AH has its style and we are sticking with it.:engel016:

I don't understand why some simmers require that every addon have full IFR capability; particularly a vintage aircraft like this.

I have plenty of modern aircraft I can fly when I want all that.

When I want to fly a vintage type I do NOT care to see a big GPS staring at me from the panel.

As always YMMV.

He, he, that's in real life airplanes as well. I saw a person some time back who had a full IFR panel in his Kit Fox LSA full scale airplane. IMHO, that's what I would call a complete waste of money. The panel most likely cost more than the airplane.

RyanJZ
June 22nd, 2015, 09:49
In the few vintage planes I have, I usually have gps as a popup gauge, so I can fly from the VC realistically, but if I need to fly an ILS because I was dumb and didn't check the weather ahead of time, I at least have the option :P of course some would call that sacrilege...

A pop-up GPS or at least a stock 2D autopilot is always a neat solution, not difficult for anybody to add to their panels and very handy if you are travelling far from home. It doesn't interfere with the look of the 3D model and you then have a choice. I too believe this one should remain faithful to the original factory aeroplane. Most classic cars are restored and run without modern equipment on the dashboard.:engel016:

Really looking forward to this, Baz! I love those big round wooden control wheels - in the vintage aviation community, pilots always highlight their love of flying any vintage plane with the full-circle control wheels - both the look and functionality, as they provide more leverage in controlling heavy ailerons. I also really like the perfect/beautiful blend of old and new - that is what most owners like to have these days - the old look, but with modern functionality (if it was completely stock/original, you'd never see these types of planes making cross-country trips today). It's just the practical way to go. You don't always have to use the modern elements, but they're there if you need them. I also very much love that it has the same appearance/look of the restored N72GT, which, in matching fashion, has a gorgeous cockpit.
