As of today our main Hard Drive is going bad, I got the warning today,

The following warning/error was logged by the smartd daemon:
Device: /dev/sda [SAT], FAILED SMART self-check. BACK UP DATA NOW!
For details see host's SYSLOG.

and the "Smart One's" looked into my warning and confirmed it, tomorrow I will request data center for another drive, once it is in, then we will go down for about 1-2 days to clone it.

Ickie,

Out of interest, what's the size of SOH stored info, and/or the archives?

Is there any possibility of having a RAID 1 system, so that we always have a back-up drive? Or again is it down to cost?

Thanks and good luck with the cloning.

I just bought a Dell 2950 server with 2-quad core processors running 2.83 GHz with 6-300 GB SAS 15,000 RPM hard drives, I just got the trays and HD's on Saturday and haven't fired it up yet. This will come online later this year and will be the future of SOH.
Right now I am only concerned with our current server and it's health.

Wanna hear something better, lol ....Dangerous Dave also bought the same model server for the dot net site :biggrin-new:
so as you see our future is well thought out. I had the seller of the hard drives send him 2 also.:dizzy:

Surprised that there's not more data than that? But with a good old Dell server and a RAID system, certainly good news for the future (no one wants to go back to the dark days of 2005!).

Is the .net domain and server going to act as a back-up, or will both .com and .net be independant and run thier own RAID systems?

A request for a new hard drive has just been made, later today we will go down for 1 day maybe.

as to the hard drive size I got 8-300 GB drives cheaper than 1 TB drive, upgrades will also come as needed on the 2 servers. The servers will be independent of each other

I have my medication now, so you can take the site down for up to 48 hours. Any time after that, I'll need to go get more. :) Good luck!

the backup that was made is now being transfered to our dot net server so until monday we might see thing running a little slower, it is nice having a backup to the backup
