I have just re-installed gMax and when I try to run it I get the usual window that asks me to get a registration code. Only problem is that when I do follow the link I come up empty with a blank page. Is there somewhere I can get the necessary registration?

Registry-Fix:
http://www.fsalpha.com/cgi-bin/filecount/purefiletracker.cgi?http://www.fsalpha.com/gmax_tips/zip/+AutoDesk_GMax+zip
--> You need the FSX SDK for that, the P3D SDK does not support GMAX anymore.

Has anyone had a look at Blender?
http://www.blender.org/
What is the opinion as to its uses as far as we are concerned i.e. A/c & buildings?

I tried it for 2 months or so, but it's been a while. Never really got the hang of it. It's a totally different handling philosophy compared to GMAX / 3DS Max.
For FSX there seem to exist a few scripts to export mdl files in the meanwhile - don't know if they support animations though. When I tried it I exported as Wavefront OBJ and did the post processing in MCX - but I used it for non animated, static models only.

There is an excellent BlenderToFSX available via FS Developer (http://fsdeveloper.com)
