After having a look at the Aerosoft F-14 paint kit, I decided to give it a try. One of my favorites has always been the VF-31 Tomcatters so here goes.

Looks good. I will be sure to download it if it ever gets available.

If you or others are planning more repaints, please consider a VF-74 Be-Devilers repaint.

Hello Tom - looking good. VF-31 is a great choice, and evolved to many different iterations over the years. Really like you did a non-CAG bird.

Fully agree - I'd say VF-74 is my favourite operational squadron. In addition to the scheme shown above, slightly more colourful paint schemes too ...

http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w305/kopecak/1153063.jpg (http://s179.photobucket.com/user/kopecak/media/1153063.jpg.html)

And also sported some interesting SU-27esque schemes - as seen here in 1993:

http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/attachment.php?attachmentid=16481&stc=1

May be a little "over the top" for some tastes - but some might find it interesting.

Any chance for a development / test scheme? There's something really clean and smart about this one ...

Fantastic paint John! Admittedly, I love the weathered tail, so life like. I just never liked the black radome though, just seemed out of place but still a great reproduction. Thanks for sharing and starting a thread that's sure to grow very quickly.

Hope to see the -74 jets as well. I can only imagine the "lead pencil" scheme for -31 was easy to see in ACM since the early Blk F-16's lost the black radomes pretty quick due to that fact.

Don't forget Mr. Anft's site for reference, my crazy request would be a CAG and Line for each squadron!

Nice work....I have a diecast model of THE PENCIL sitting atop my dresser along with a Black Lions CAG bird. Had the pleasure to see it fly in person a
couple of times at Oceana.

If anyone wants to do a VF-201 HUNTERS paint, I do have the Scalemaster 1/48 scale decals I can scan if that will help. Just let me know.

Groom Lake Simulations on facebook has painted a couple. So far Maverick's plane from the Top Gun movie and the same image was displayed so I suppose that one will follow. He has also done an early VF-84 bird.

Thanks, Tom. I noticed something wonky with the site the last time I visited. As for the AS Tomcat paints, I'm looking forward to them.

Aside from the ones you're working on and those by Groom Lake Simulations, I'm surprised I haven't seen more repaints in the works by now. Seems there are lots to do by lots of repaint artists.

BTW - I cast my vote for a blue splinter NSAWC repaint.

I have a request though. After you're finished with Gypsy 107, could you make Gypsy 110 from the same time period? BuNo was 162703. She was the first F-14 that I got to work as an Air Traffic Controller and was the top choice on my "I want to work one of these in my career" list.

As I mentioned Warhorse, I am completely rebuilding my website. Once I get things rolling again, I will post link to all the Aerosoft F-14 repaints and the Milviz F-4 both E and J models. Probably wait on the F-4 J until the final release.

I have all the Milviz F-4's finished but still seem to find things that need correcting or added to on the Aerosoft f-14. My next priority is get the website redone then post the paint links. It won't be long now.

Appreciate the interest.

I was stationed at North Island during the F-14 era, and watched most of the Miramar squadrons, as well as visitors from Oceana. The most attractive F-14 scheme was, hands down, VF-101's #101 (bright red). Tom: if there is any room still on the list, please include that one. I will attach images - if someone will tell me how to do so (frustrated trying).

Hi Tom,

Thanks so much for doing the VF-101 "Reapers" texture that I requested. It will undoubtedly be my favorite F-14. I do note that your screen-shots, as well as possibly the photo that I provided, show a somewhat "pastel" (faded - washed out?) look to the red upper color. In real life, on the occasions that I saw her, the actual red on the bird was a "stronger" (more intense) color. I hope all these not very descriptive words make sense. In any case, I am going to love this texture. Thanks for a great Christmas present (even if the delivery man comes later).

Best regards, Bill

stovall
December 25th, 2014, 11:05
Bill, your comments are just what I needed to hear. I will make the red color more intense. I have numerous model pictures and a few of the real thing. The model pic show a more intense red color. I have made several other changes to accommodate what the aircraft looked like in real life. The pictures posted are definitely a work in progress. Back with more later. Again, appreciate the help and comments.

Domingo mentioned that my VF-33 Starfighters repaint package still has the VF-31 tanks logo on them. Don't get old is my advise. Easy fix, just copy the Stores file from Texture.VF-101.2004 to the folder, select overwrite and the Tomcatter's logo will be gone. Sorry for that. Should have the VF-101 Grim Reapers Low Viz ready sometime today after final checks.

The brown and tan are mismatched. I have corrected the problem. February 8th, 2015, 08:08
sepp666, I haven't posted the F-14A Ferris scheme yet because there are several versions of what it should look like out there. The model versions appear inaccurate. The real photo version of the pattern is different. Fsafranek pointed out that there should be five points along the fuselage. He is absolutely correct when viewing the photo versions. My first rendition had only four. This was because there is a poly aberration on both sides of the lateral views. This made producing a straight line almost impossible at this area. After more attempts I think I have what should be an accurate version using the only photos I could find. (About 5 photos). Unfortunately there is no really good photo of the right lateral fuselage. I found one showing most of the right side so decided to make both sides the same with five points. Hopefully fsafranek or someone will see what I have done to verify the results are what they should be. fsafranek got a PM asking for help with the images of the new results. I made two versions for the VF-1 Ferris scheme as seen in a picture of the USS Enterprise. One has decals and the Modex 100. The other has no Modex or any markings other than the Ferris pattern. There is a number 42 on the tip of the vertical stabilizer. Waiting for verification of the new pattern.

One without decals and a number 42 on the tail. The other is AC 100 as seen on the USS Enterprise. I have fairly good pictures of both. My helper got back to me and confirmed the pictures above are correct on the points along the fuselage. Back soon. Thanks for the interest.

Thank you for the info, those are good news. Is there a chance that you upload the original photos too?

just so you are aware....the aircraft that has the number 42 on the nose is VX-1 Evaluators.

Skyhawk, all my research shows the two F-14A Ferris Paint schemes to be uploaded were from the VF-1 WolfPack. AC 100 is mentioned in this reference. See HERE! (http://www.topedge.com/alley/squadron/lant/vf1hist.htm) My pictures of the number 42 bird also say it was VF-1. Other references say there were Keith Ferris schemes especially VF-124. Comments and any help is very much appreciated. I should have these two birds up within the hour.

Sepp666, I will put several real photos in the readme files.

Thanks to all who helped me with this project.

Alrighty........i will do some research later. What buno are you using for nunber 42?

I was wrong it was VX-4

Additionally, in the late 1970's a few F-14s (VX-4: 159827/"41", 159829/"43", 159830/"44", 159831/"45"; VF-1: 158979/"NK100"; VF-2: 158985/"NK200"; VF-124: 159827/"NJ410"; PMTC: ??????/"201"; VF-101: 161135/"AD102" slightly different Ferris colours in 1981) were temporarily painted in the so-called Keith Ferris camouflage scheme (see below). For this deceptive paint system three gray colours were applied in a serrated scheme (matt dark gray (FS 36118, dark gull gray (FS 36231) and light gull gray (FS 36440)).

<center>http://www.anft.net/f-14/f14-detail-colours-03.gif</center>

And sometimes, when an exercise was on schedule, some squadrons painted their F-14s with water-soluble dark green and brown colours (at least VF-11, VF-74, VF,124, VF-211, VF-213 (see F-14 Photo section)). Today there fly a few special coloured F-14s at the Navy Fighter Weapons School (see F-14 Sqaudron and F-14 Photo sections), wearing the colours of Russian Sukhoi Su-27s or Iranian Tomcats for adversary air combat training. Also, a few VF-74 F-14Bs received a special two-tone grey colour scheme for adversary training just prior to the squadron's disestablishment (see F-14 Squadron and F-14 Photo section).

Actually number 42 did not have a BuNo paint on the fuselage. There wasn't much of anything on number 42. The BuNo for 42 by the records with the VF-1 was 159828 put into service October 1976 and retired January 1996. The real picture in the included readme shows no numbers at all.

Yes Skyhawk, I saw that at MATS. This is why I took so long to publish the textures. I have more references that say it was on the USS Enterprise and belonged to VF-1 Wolf Pack. Oh well, the paint is what it is. Hope everyone enjoys it. Thanks to those who offered assistance in trying to get the correct information and pictures.

You can collect drawings, paintings, decal sheets, study repainted museum displays and model kits, read historical recounts
written years later, etc., until you're blue in the face (and driven to search even more because they will conflict). But a
photograph of the real aircraft is the indisputable final word (and even then always question captions).

Granted my sources are limited but I've only ever seen photos of the Ferris scheme in the darker grays on the Enterprise or
flying with/parked among VF-1 birds. And also a couple examples (found after our messages Tom) from VX-4 taken at Nellis
in 1977 (according to the captions) with the same camo pattern in lighter tones of gray but with all markings painted over
except the nose numbers and crew names.

Wow, look at that special Tomcat paint: http://theaviationist.com/2014/02/21/new-photo-splinter-iriaf-tomcat/
I like that a lot, what do you think?
