Ok, I have this great set of multiresolution files from another designer who placed the datum way off from the CoG. I fix the location and go to make my model and then I notice that the selection "File/Create MultiResolution MDL file" is greyed out. I have searched and can find no documentation as to what might cause this to be disabled or how to enable it.
I also have a text file from the original designer for compiling the model. I have no idea how to use this file. I have made three aircraft with this tool but no MultiRes. I have a tutorial for multiresolution models but it simply says "Click on File/Create MultiResolution MDL file" as if it should alway be available. Any help as to what to do next is appreciated.
I believe the original models were made with FSDS and I am using FSDS2 if this helps at all. Any ideas?

Hi;
Sounds like you have an FSDS version 1 model there. In FSDS V1 you created your LOD models as separate files, created MDL files for each LOD model, then used the program with the text file you mentioned to compile the final, multi-res MDL.
With FSDS V2, all the various LOD models are in the same file. If you look under "Model" on the menu bar. you will see the commands used to create and modify these LOD models. I'm sure there are tutorials that will be able to tell the details of this more clearly than I could. If not, I would gladly give you more info.
As far as to why you cannot create a model, that is indeed a mystery. Is your FSDS all registered and all that good stuff? I seem to recall having to put in a registration code after installing the program, did you do this? Also, when you first import a V1 model into V2, it asks if you want to remove certain processes V1 had in its models, did you opt to remove them? Those are the only things I can think might be complicating things for you.....

I am sure that the software is perfectly capable of creating a model if I knew what to do! I have found no tutorial for multiresolution models that applies to FSDS2. If you know of one I would love to know where to get it.
I have a whole collection of files, eight to be exact, of the plane with the ratios and all. There must be some way of turning the eight models into a single multiresolution model. I assume it has something to do with the add model or insert model command. When I select add model, all I get is a blank screen ready for me to start drawing. I can't believe that I have to redraw the whole airplane for each resolution when I already have it in a file. The help file is worse than useless. Any clues or hints are appreciated.

Okay, lets deal with these one at a time. I say your post on FFDS and the reply you received cleared this up nicely. To make a multi-res model, you only need to Click on the menu bar "File" > "Create FS Object File" > "Aircraft File (MDL)". As long as you have LOD models, the file created is automatically multi-res. The "create Multi-resolution MDL File" is left over from FSDS v1 (though it does still work if you create an FS2000 model.)
As for the multi-res, once you create your LOD models, you can import the LOD model by selecting "File" > "Merge Project", then select the name of the file you wish to add. Use the "Model" > "Manage Models" to edit the type of model, and also to put the transition points in. This is the point at which you MDL changes from one model to the next, and is expressed in Meters/Pixels. You will find these numbers in your text file, plug them in and tweak from there.
Hope that helps........

For what it's worth, I agree 100% with Pstrany's comments. having successfully built many, many FSDS models, it MUST work.
