I went to Fleet Week this last weekend and it was awesome as usual. I thought that re-creating some of it in FSX using ORBX Nor Cal and the Acceleration F-18 would be fun.

I came across these two videos that have the bay populated with lots of boats the way it is during the real life air show.

There is no mention of where the scenery came from. Has anyone ever seen anything like that available?

Holy CRAP!!! This is ART. Watch all three of these videos. A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. I would love to see a thread or an article on how this was done. both the flying (and the jedi masters who flew it.) and the film production. Really excellent work.

The city scenery is US Cities X San Francisco. The boats are most likely from turning leisure boats (and possibly ships and ferries) settings up high. I'd guess there may have been custom scenery made specifically to place additional boats. Edit: Actually, rewatching the video, I'm more inclined to say the majority of the boats are custom scenery.

No kidding, right? If you read the youtube comments, the guy says it was done by one person only using FS recorder.

Gotcha. I'll try just cranking the settings up with ORBX Nor Cal installed and see what I get.

While I agree that the flying and the camera work were well done, the lack of shadows during the first part of the first video almost made me stop watching, so unrealistic looking IMO. I can't imagine having shadows turned off.

Seriously? I am sure the authors turned off shadows because I am sure the routine and local scenery hammered the CPU/GPU frame rates. Also very likely why there were no clouds. The flying and the video work were awesomely done. Im at least willing to spare some shadows and clouds to get decent FPS.

In addition to what ejoiner mentioned, the US Cities X San Francisco scenery itself is really hard on the frame rates, especially with the scenery and autogen sliders up high.

Probably true, but if I was doing a video, then I wouldn't want anything to detract from what I was trying to show off in the video and for me, lack of shadows is very noticeable, maybe because of my photography background or how much CGI work I do. If I was doing the video and I couldn't run it with shadows or clouds, I would have either not done the video or picked a less demanding area if my intent was to showcase the precision flying, just saying.
I am always amazed when I see a screenshot or video that has a lack of shadows in it and I think, did they not see that before hand??!!

I was amazed at the flying. i use FSRecorder all the time, so I can't imagine the time and effort put into setting up each flight.

Well, I am sure personal preference and computer setup figured in the authors choice. I have a relatively new PC (this year) with lots of ram, a good GPU and CPU, and ORBX Nor Cal Scenery. I know that if I fly an airplane with very high velocity down low I am definitely going to get the blurries. In a desire to create a cinematic piece like this, I would do what I could to avoid that. Lack of shadows and clouds would be my first choice.
