Can someone direct me to a CFS2 La-11 aircraft? I am assisting a local writer in some backstory research for a suspense novel. The backstory involves intercepts and shootdowns of US/UK/NATO recon aircraft in the 1945-1955 period. I have found all the other aircraft necessesary to reproduce/recreate the incidents except for the Lavochkin La-11 Fang. There's a very aged La-11 for CFS1, and a lovely FS9-FSX one from AFScrub. I was actually suprised that there wasn't a CFS2 version available. I've googled, and checked all the major flightsim site, but no luck, other rhan the unsupported payware Bear Studios version. Any assistance would be appreciated.

There is one in the Fox Four Korean war set. also Aeroplane Heaven had a LA-9.

here is Morton's

Remember to remove the ".jpg" extention from LA-9_Korea.zip.jpg
after you download it.

I have a modified CFG and DP that works with it.

This is great! Danielle thanks you too. I'll get right on this, and see if I can get everything put together to run the intercepts properly. I think the Fox Four bird is an AI, but I will take another look. I have the AH La-9 which the Chinese PLAAF used extensively. One of the scenarios that Dani put together was for PLAAF La-9s intercepting a PB4Y-2 near Hainan. Maybe someday someone will convert AFScrub's La-11, CFS2 still needs a good one.

yes the FF is an AI. I would use it for that. If you need a quick repaint just yell. The AH version will be frame rate heavy as an AI.

Morton's version is here as well...

http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/local_links.php?action=jump&catid=51&id=6762

my air and cfg is slightly different then Thicko's version. You may find its a bit heavy to handle. I can't remember if I've flown Morton's version. Either way they are both great conversions/

I was working on a modified air and cfg version for use as the LA-11. I never finished it. I still have it I believe. If your interested I can dig it up again.

MUCH appreciation BH! I am pretty much clueless when it comes to mods and tweaks, so any tinkering would be welcome. I could run the scenarios for the La-11 with La-9s but suspense authors really are sticklers for accuracy. The major differences between the -9 and -11 were the oil cooler moved to the lower cowl lip, larger fuel tanks for extended range, provision for tip tanks and the loss of one cannon to compensate for higher fuel weight. I understand that the Lavochkins were the preferred interceptor due to their multiple cannon armament, as opposed to the Yak-9 single cannon and 1-2 mgs. If I were intercepting a nuclear capable, possibly nuclear armed bomber, I would want a battery of 155mm howitzers!

do you have a link to AF Scrub's LA-11? I think if we ask Misson and get perms it could be done. Unless Morton or Thicko have it tucked away somewhere.

That would be really great if we could. If nothing else, it's a historically significant aircraft, the last of the production Soviet piston-powered fighters. That's why I was suprised to find that it hadn't been done for CFS2 already. What would work best, pleading or bribery?

I've been mining the internet for data pertaining to the La-11 today. Some interesting stuff out there, but I don't know how helpful it would be to a developer/converter. It's available if someone wants to take a swing at it. Just let me know and I'll send it. Thanks in advance.

Oh, that's OK BH, This isn't a critical project thing, more like a "Wouldn't it be nice..." thing. I don't want anyone to use up time on this when they have other irons in the fire. I just wish I had the knowledge/skills to actually do some of it. I have GIMP and Gmax now, so someday... after a lot of study and practice, I'll be able to do something besides stand in the crowd and cheer. Take your time and look at it when you can.

BH23/Wayland,

I spent a few hours on this today, & this is as far as I got:

Converts OK using MDLC117beta, won't convert with MDLC190.
To avoid gauge issues I put the default F4U-1A Corsair panel.cfg to get her into the sim.
Animations are OK, but the cockpit canopy appears opaque brown.

The pilot1.bmp is the culprit, but I couldn't find any alpha format that would make it transparent. In the end I eliminated the pilot1.bmp from the texture folder, to leave an untextured pilot. I then used MDLmat to make the pilot material disappear (made the material fully transparent), but in doing so also lost the front windshield frame & gunsight from the cockpit.

I think a more elegant solution would be to eliminate the AF Scrub pilot model altogether, if possible (without losing the windshield frame & gunsight).

BTW I added Wolfis IJN pilot by adding it to the dp file, which is a renamed dp from Morten's/ AH La-9.

Next steps would be new airfile & a better matched dp, then converting the panel.cfg to use cfs2 gauges...

Thoughts?

Hey UT,

I have a copy of the conversion from Shessi. He managed to get the alpha for the pilot. I can send you a copy if you'd like. He converted both models.

Next will be the cockpit and panel. I'm not a pro at this so if you can do that I'll work on the DP.

We'll need a gauge for the fuel tanks. One that will allow us to use the wing tanks. I believe one model has them. I could make them if needed. I'm not sure how AF Scrubs did the textures for them (I haven't looked). They appear white in the screen shot.

We could do two seperate AC's. Then we could do the DP for the long range version.

I'll let know know how it goes. I'm going to get a model to work with in Gmax so I can make the DP close fitting.

Till Later,
John

Hey Pepe,

Anything you have would be great. We definitely need gauges.

Currently I've sent all of the copies to UT. That way the two of us have everything. I'm going to take the DP from the LA-9 and make it fit the LA-11. I'll start going through the Airfile and see about the fuel arrangements.

Wayland,

We have a basic working AC right now if you want to give it a spin. You can at least use it for your missions until we get it all finished. Send me a PM with your Email and I'll get it out to you.

You can do a FF install or start a new one with SW's scenery. Talon has done mission conversions for the FF campaigns. You can ask him for them.

This is one grunty airplane. Saw a "drag race" in New Zealand between a P51D and the La 9 a few years ago - both planes came over the airfield together at around 150 knots then firewalled the throttle. The Mustang didn't see which way the La went! The pilot said it was one of the "friskiest" planes he'd flown.....

SPman, you are so right! I've put a couple of ROC vs CC missions together and the CC La-9s consistently outscored the ROC F-51s.I flew both sides and I guarantee, you DON'T want to tangle with the La-9 in a serious fight.

PS: The Chinese Civil War is an interesting setup for the assortment of planes in use. A lot of Japanese stuff was pressed into service on both sides. It also fits in my current Early Cold War timeframe.

Have been testing the Beta La-11 against other piston aircraft of the same vintage, and it stacks up very well. Good acceleration, light on the controls, manouvers very well, hits hard. Takeoff is smooth, landings no problems. Somewhat limited forward vision. Got to re-download a Sea Fury to test against, mine isn't working for some reason, but it hangs in with the F8F-2, F2G-2, P-51D, Spit 22, Seafire 47, Spiteful and Seafang very well. I did notice that visually, the cannons all seem to fire at the same time in a salvo. You can see the tracers going out side by side. Due to the medium-low rate of fire (550RPM), in a maouvering fight, I have had an opponent fly in between the salvoes and nd escape. On the flip side, the NS-23 packs enough power to put a fighter out with 2-3 hits. All in all, I have no qualms about flying an La-11 into a serious fight.

Hi Wayland, I'm nearly ready to give this aircraft some attention next. I'm sure I can tweak the dp to avoid the "opponent flying through salvoes" issue.

The DP I sent is just the LA-9's renamed. I've been working the last three nights. So should be able to get to it Saturday nite.

The Wing Tanks are mapped. I just have to finish the textures and do the DP for it. Then I can do the adjustments for them in the Air and CFG.

Have you tried the Panel Morton made for the LA-9? You might have better visibility.

UT,

I'll pass along the tanks once I have them finished. How should they be painted? I'm having a hard time finding pic for them. Were they the same color as the AC?

I have a late lavochkin panel set I'm going to try on her today. I picked it up years ago from either Flightsim or Simviation, don't remember which. It's by Mike Eustace, that's all I know about it. It's supposed to be for late La7, La9 and La-11. As soon as I shake it down with a couple test flights, I'll start flying agains early jets. I noticed the Morten La-9 doesn't have as much problem with the guns salvoing, maybe It's just perception on my part. Off to maintain my munddane existenc, back to testing this afternoon or evening.

They are all done.

What do you think?

13534
Korean textured tanks

13535
Russian VVS textures.

I made three tanks. one set is for left and right. They are painted to match the Russian textures. The last one is just a single tank that can go on either side. Thats for the Korean texture.

I had no pictures to go by for the Russian set. So they are fictional. I can repaint them if someone finds a good pic to go by.

I've done a little DP work. I'll send it to both of you. UT, I used your DP and changed out the tanks. I've also removed the bombs.

Try this for the guns and tell me what you think.

From...

[GUNSTATIONS]
; outer Port NS-23 23mm
gunstation.0=0,24,1,0.138,686,2,0.05,712,4,40,1d1* 81.8,-0.48,0.5,0.95,-0.11965,0,0,0,0,0,0,6.74

So everything in red is what I changed.

I speed up the RPM to...
g.0= 540rpm
g.1= 550rpm
g.2= 560rpm

that should give a good spread.

damage was reduced. round weight was reduced. I also changed the spec to cannons. thats the "2" three numbers in. I also put the range to 600m. now the down side to this is that you use more ammo per kill and faster. but less weight to help with range. its more to the true specs. though I wonder how the AI will handle it.

UncleTgt

Thanks John, got the tanks, will look at them tonight. Does anyone have an idea on their capacity? The only data I can find says they added 275ltrs to the 2nd prototype but that included internal tanks & the wing tip tanks.

I would leave the gun trigger as 1 rather than 2, the AI doesn't seem to recognise the "cannon" button. They'll fly into position, just won't take the shot.

I guess the other changes are largely subjective, & I will always roll with more accurate data. A couple of the russian sites quote 2 x 100kg bombs as a warload, but I've not been able to find photos that show anything other than the wing tip tanks.

However the biggest issue I think will be deciding the hit points for the 23mm. This is not easily solved, as the dp box hit points of what you're shooting at plays a part here, & without some hard & fast rules to calculate everything out with, every aircraft seems to be a little different.

I chose a figure in an old gun data zip file I downloaded some years ago. But it does feel right that it should hit harder than the Hispano 20mm & Mauser 20mm, & even the Jap Type 99 20mm is often quoted in dp files at 39 hit points. Do we really think it's only 2 x better than the 50 cal (often quoted at 17-18pts)?

On the gun issue, have you checked on Tony Williams site? He seems to have some very accurate data and a couple of formulas for calculating various efficency factors. It's at http://www.quarryhs.co.uk/. He also has a forum at Delphi, it is here: http://forums.delphiforums.com/n/main.asp?webtag=autogun&nav=messages&prettyurl=%2Fautogun%2Fmessages%2F&gid=2005183900 (http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/forums.delphiforums.com/n/main.asp?webtag=autogun&nav=messages&prettyurl=%2Fautogun%2Fmessages%2F&gid=2005183900) . He collaborated with Dr. Emmanuele Gustin on the "Flying Gun" series of technical books on aircraft gun armament. Her website is here: http://users.telenet.be/Emmanuel.Gustin/ .

I'll install the whole works this morning sometime and wring it out over the rest of the day. I didn't get too far on the early jet tests due to life intervening over the weekend, but I'll be back on the test program today.

Thanks, guys, you have all been "above and beyond" on this.

that is everything for 20mm and 23mm. so you can see why I chose the value that I did.

on to the fuel...

Here is what I calculated. it might not be correct...

All in gallons;
Total=290.59 - LA-11's total fuel load
MainOnly=217.94 -original LA-9
Wing Tanks=72.65 - the extra added

from that this is what I came up with.

again all gallons;
Wing tank1=39.325
Wing tank2=39.325
Main1=130.764
Main2=87.176

Now I used the LA-9 as my starting point. then just did the math.

I'll send what I have.

Oh, excellent. I can see why you used this source data. Williams admits he found varying data when he did his research, so no one really knows without a head-to-head, hands-on test. This looks pretty comprehensive, and accurate to me.

~40 gallons looks about right for the tip tanks, they are not very big. The -11 structure was beefed up, but they can't have done much more with the other added weight from the heavier landing gear, etc. Too much weight on the ends of the wings would also cut down the manouverablity.

oh the trigger on mine is still at 0. so they are still set to the gun and not the cannon trigger.

I just went through most of the mig-15s that I have. Nole has his as 52 for the 23mm. Thats the highest I've seen. Other wise 38 seems to be the norm. 45 would be the half way. i guess it will require testing. personally i'd rather be shot at by 38 then 52. but i'd rather have 52 for my guns.

Been doing test flights agains a variety of early jets. The current Beta version stacks up suprisingly well at surviving. I threw a bunch of late WWII piston fighters, early jets and other stuff into the test install and started running QC against random opponents. I selected things so that I flew aginst both eastern block and western. I actually shot down MiG-15's on two seperate flights. It wasn't easy, but I survived most fights with jets. Only got waxed 6 times out of 20 flights, survived in 14. Total kills for me, 9, including the 2 MiGs. Didn't do too much in FF, this was a combat capabilities test. So far, so good.

Hi, KH

I just came up with the idea, the others are doing the real work. I think its a good idea, after all it was a significant aircraft of the time period, even if not used widely outside the Soviet Union. I've only been able to find it in Soviet, Chinese, NKPAF and Romania. I've seen one reference to it in Bulgarian service, but haven't found any supporting documentation. The early Cold War is one of my favorite periods, but not a lot of aircraft available for it, at least not that I have been able to find.

Well the models are converted. The Tanks are made. UT is doing some final work on the panel. I think Pepe is helping with that bit. Once everything is back together I think we can release it.

Pepe thinks its still a bit to much. So the air and CFG need to be looked into a little more. Do we want this one set for AI use? Might be too frame rate heavy.

Wayland
October 24th, 2014, 14:04
I'v only noticed it when I'm up against an opponent that's a frame rate-heavy aircraft. For example, with 4-8 KM PB4Y-2s. It dogs a bit, but that's also a given with my 15 year old antique steam-powered computer, too. I'll try it on my 3-year old laptop and see what happens.

Pepe's done a pretty good airfile & panel, so I've been spending time on the textures.
I ended up pretty much redrawing the textures for the Russian model from scratch.
Here's some WIP shots of a "cherry red" La-11 from 911IAP, circa 1949 that I'm using to test out the redrawn bitmaps. Once I've got this worn & dirtied up, I'll start on some Korean & PLAAF skins (although aircraft from both these air forces were reportedly flown by Russian pilots...).

Hi All

Finally got CFS2 installed on the laptop and sorry to report it is even more frame rate sensitive than my desktop machine. I notice a distinct impact on nearly half the aircraft I installed. I suspect that it's mainly due to the fact the laptop is a general purpose, entry level machine that is mainly used for word-processing and traveling to and from the local wi-fi hotspot for updates, etc. No seperate video card, basic everthing. I'll continue to tinker with it and see what can be done.

UT, that skin is gorgeous! I've always liked the artic visibility schemes, and that one looks particularly good.

Back to flight testing.

Whilst messing about with some panel & VC appearance issues, I'm crashing on with some more paints:

A green/ sky blue model that crash-landed in Sweden during 1949
An overall grey model from the Arctic experiment in 1950
351st IAP in Chinese markings, as it appeared over Shanghai in 1950
An overall grey North Korean model from 1950
A hasty green/grey camo Korean model from 1953

Well, life whupped me up the side of my head again, but I'm back now and back to the flight test program. I'm pretty much happy with the -11 as she sits, all but the instrument panel. (See the screengrab below.)

Tough to shoot someone when your gunsight reticle is out of sight below the coaming.The La-9 reticle is better but ... no gunsight. The gunsight isn't necessary, but it does add to the ambience. (See below.)

Genlemen, I have done what damage I could, and the bird jut sailed through it all. It's a first class all-around fighter. The -9 is slightly better as a pure dogfighter, but the -11 holds her own. Maybe not world-class, but definitely First-class.

I noticed some loss of control effectiveness at speeds over 350Kts, not suprising with no power boosting, and I believe in a dive I ran into compressibity. I wouldn't go into a high speed dive under 3000 feet, it might be prove to be... uncomfortable.

Stall characteristics are quite polite, the aircraft shakes gently for a second or so, the nose "hunts" for about two seconds, then it falls off, usually to the left. Recovery so far has been quick, usually just pointing the nose down and increasing throttle 10% is enough to recover.

It's a bit fiddly to trim out, but once trimmed properly, you can pretty much forget trim over a fairly large range of power settings.

Ceiling tops out at 33,290 for me. I reached 402 mph at 19,000 feet.

I even shot down a Mig-15 with it!

I would go with the gun DP mod and, either the V2 panel or the UT-Pepe unit. I like them both, and I'm sure there were production line variations.

All in all, I can't think of any other changes needed. You all can continue to tweak, but I'm happy. Release it into the wild at your discretion.

Steve, part time test-pilot and dishwasher.

P.S.: With the gun fix, I'm getting 12-18% hits almost every mission, highest was 27%, lowest 9%. Get in close, fire a short burst, duck the flying debris.

I'm going to do two more wing tanks for use with UT's textures. One for the Silver/polished metal and one for the Red.

Should I add any gloss to the material? What would help to shine it up?

Update: Ok all the models are finished and waiting compiling. Wayland, UT they are headed your way for evals once complete. I've remapped the model for UTs textures. The bare metal one wasn't lining up. I'll get some screen shots as soon as they are finished.

As a note they have some glossiness and specular level to the material. Not alot, but more then it had before.

Roger that, I'll kick it off to you sometime today. I'll send with both panels. I'm sure there will be other refinements that you will want to add, but it it works very well as is. I will run through the mods this morning and make sure they are complete before I kick it off. I don't want to do a vast job in a half-vast way.

Again, my heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped, and expressed interest in this project. It was a needed aircraft for completion of significant aircraft represented in CFS2.

UT,
I don't think the red one is red enough. It looks pale-ish. Maybe its just because your Red texture for the LA-11 is a Crimson Red. The Green and Sky Blue match perfectly. I could have made them with a little bit more shine. They are on the way to both of you.

Got it John, & agree the tone of the cherry red is off. Will rework & send you an updated texture.

You've probably noticed I avoided doing repaints for the "ko" model textures. It's because the "Ru" model seems to use the "ko" textures for some internal textures. This can get messy when trying to fit coloured "ko" repaints in the same texture folder. Better to split them & abandon the "ko" model altogether. It's better to package all using just the "Ru" model, but leaving the silver grey "ko" textures in the file (for the internal parts).:dizzy:

UT has sent me a new texture. So we can correct that.

Ok I think we need one more test pilot before we ship this one out.

Here are a few things that I've noticed.

--The fuel selector switches don't work in the current setep. Not sure if its the Airfile or CFG. It goes to "both" or "off" and thats it. I haven't tried to play with it yet.

--Also the panel needs to go to the right a bit. The gunsight isn't centered.

--Maybe bring the view down as well. the guns aren't lined up.

--I'm getting almost no rudder. Maybe its just me. I have been flying alot of WWI birds lately.

Question...
Do you want the tanks to be selectable or do you just want them on the plane?

Oh one last thing. I'm going to rename the tanks.

Wayland
November 12th, 2014, 14:06
Hi, John

I don't think I ever flew a long enough flight to need to switch tanks. I did have some trouble with getting the landing gear to retract, but I think that was a dirty install, I re-nstalled and it worked fine.

I assumed the gunsight was purposely off center, like in a Bf-109, especially with a aux ring and bead next to it.

I didn't really notice the guns being off, but most of my firing was done at under 100 yards, seemed to be very effective.

I noticed rudder effectiveness falls off at higher speeds,above 280 Kts. I usually cut the throttle by about 15-20% and it worked fine again.

Might as well have selectable tanks, it would be convenient. After looking at some drawings (unsure how accurate the drawings were) it looked like the wingtips went 6-8 inches into the tanks. Not sure how to get a clean jettison, were they actually droppable in flight? The drawing arrangement made me think that they were a ground crew attach-detach operation. I'll see if I can find those drawings again, and forward them to you.

Yes, please get another test pilot. One opinion, especially mine, isn't enough. I haven't been back in flight sim that long, less than 1 year, you need at least one experienced pilot, hopefully with experience at modding, to really wring this bird out.

Steve

P.S.: Here is a link to a drawing showing how deep into the tanks the wingtip goes. Again I have no idea how accurate this is.

Wayland,
You've done an outstanding job. I think it would be nice to have someone who hasn't stared at all of this for the last few weeks. Just a fresh outlook is all. Otherwise if everyone is in agreement then we can run with what we have.

I believe the tanks were fixed. once on they were on. but in order to use them in CFS2 I think they have to be able to fall off. not sure realy. Tango tried to explain it to me a few years ago but i didn't quite get it. I actually wanted to make the LA-9M with the wing tanks. Thats why I jumped at this like I did.

Hi, John

I've got to say I was running out of ideas for testing. The last few flights I'd fire up and sit there with my mind a total blank (not unusual for me anyway).

I've actually taken a couple days off from active flying to do some additional research on the early Cold War and found there were numerous incidents starting as early as late August of '45. Also starting to compile a list of aircraft in service during the 1945 to the late 50's, to check availability for CFS2. Not sure about a cut off date, but have to stop somewhere. I figure the cutoff at about the time the Sidewinder/AA-2 missile came into service, because of the inability to use guided air-to-air missiles in CFS2.

Got to check on available scenery packages also. Mainly Europe, the Baltic and the China coast, but would be nice to find something for the Turkish-Iranian strip.

BTW I found a absolutely WONDERFUL map resource. The University of Texas Perry-Castenada Library has a huge map collection including operational and tactical pilotage charts for most of the world. I could easily spend days just going through that, and they are free to download.

Oh well bck to the mundane world, is 7 degrees F here this morning, need to do my morning check of the area to see what froze this time.

Oops, didn't mean to blow up your reputation for being omniscent.

Being an archive rat, I have a special affinity for maps, historical and otherwise. I grab and save everything I can find, map-wise.

There's a University library in California That has nearly the entire Soviet Union west of the Urals in original Red Army issue maps, but you have to have a student ID there to access it. Talk about major frustration! Grrrrr!:banghead:

Maybe if I can scare up some extra dosh, I can enroll in an online history class there and get access that way. I WILL find a way!

Steve

Wayland

Hmmm. Apparently the Red army maps aren't digitised, so you actually have to go into the physical library on campus to access them. To quote Pooh, "Oh, Bother!". Not that I think that much of Berkley anyway. There are other sources online, so there IS a way.

so for the finished model what is left to do?

-Is the panel all set. I think we had a couple guage issues.
-Model, RU or KO. I believe you said the KO.
-Tanks are finished with all of the textures. Do you want me to rename them?
-Airfile and CFG. need the tanks fixed what else.

UncleTgt
December 4th, 2014, 06:01
John,

I thought Pepe did a nice job on the airfile & panels.
The only gauge issue was the fuel tank selector, but it might be Soviet doctrine for the pilot to not have too much choice ... :hatchet:

I never tried it for long range to see if the tanks actually worked properly & gave you the legs, but IIRC Pepe did put the wing tip tanks into the airfile.

Your readme for the tanks was fine, no need to do any more with them in my opinion.

All the paints are based on the ru model, which seems identical to the ko model. I chose the ru model because some of the internal textures are from parts of the ko texture sheet, so it allows you to have silver grey undercarriage bays, even though the exterior is green/sky. This is not so easy to do the other way round!

Scrolling back I notice Steve has some comments regarding gunsights & lining up the sight with the bullet stream, but that's all.

Hello all

Sorry about my hiatus, but life bit me in the *** with some health problems. I wish to report that this project not only brought forth a important historical aircraft, but also created a new CFS2 flightsimmer. My author friend was so fascinated with the entire concept and operation of the sim that she ordered a copy of CFS2 off Amazon, along with a joystick and is now busily learning to fly the unfriendly skies. I've ben doing a lot of coaching, so she should be ready to engage the enemy in areial warfare soon. As it stands right now, the La-11 as rendered by all you fellows is her aircraft of choice. How 'bout that?!:encouragement: She asked me to stand you all to a virtual pint, so here you go.:very_drunk:

Thanks again for all you hard work on this conversion.
