Fabian Coulthard obliterates lap record in qualifying at Bathurst

Brad Jones Racing’s Fabian Coulthard has taken both the all-time ad qualifying record for a V8 Supercar at the Bathurst 1000 in qualifying after setting a time of 2:05.7011, while Triple Eight’s Jamie Whincup and Rod Nash Racing’s David Reynolds will be forced to start from the last row of the grid after both crashing out.
The first realistic pole time was set by Mark Winterbottom in the Ford Performance Racing Falcon, with a time of 2:06.2556 set on his first run, three-tenths slower than he’d managed in the previous practice session, then leading the Brad Jones Racing Holden of Jason Bright and Volvo’s Scott McLaughlin at this point.
Pole favourite David Reynolds was an early casualty in qualifying, crashing out at the top of the mountain at The Grate just before the ten minute mark. The Rod Nash Racing driver was on his flying lap and was passing one of the Jack Daniel’s Nissans, which caught him off guard and he hit the outside wall with the front right, bouncing across and then hitting the inside wall with the rear of his Ford Falcon FG, coming to rest and bringing out the first red flag of the session.
Shortly after the session resumed, it was championship leader Jamie Whincup’s turn to run into drama. The five-time champion crashed out at The Cutting, losing the rear of his Holden Commodore as he turned in, ensuring he will start no higher than 25th for the race on Sunday.
After another red flag stoppage, the session resumed with just over 20 minutes remaining. Tekno Autosports Shane Van Gisbergen clipped the wall at the top on his flying lap and rturned to the pits, but when he returned to the track with ten minutes to go he went fastest, but then was immediately outpaced by Fabian COulthard in the Brad Jones Racing Holden, who smashed the all-time lap record with a time of 2:05.6080 in his Commodore, almost six-tenths clear.
Jason Bright was on course to go even faster but made a mistake down at The Chase and ran across the gravel trap,
Shane Van Gisbergen was able to improve on his final run to get to within nine-hundredths of a second of Coulthard, but the biggest surprise came from Britek’s Dale Wood, who went third fastest right in the dying moments and knocked Holden Racing Team’s James Courtney out of the all-important top ten.
Craig Lowndes qualified tenth and will be the only Triple Eight driver in with a shot of pole following Whincup’s crash earlier in the session.
Winterbottom ended up fourth fastest, the best placed Ford driver, with Scott McLaughlin fifth for Nissan.

<section class="entry-content clearfix" itemprop="articleBody"> Shane Van Gisbergen has claimed pole position for this year’s running of the Bathurst 1000km race at Mount Panorama, outperforming Ford’s Mark Winterbottom in the pole position shootout, while yesterday’s lap record holder Fabian Coulthard could only manage fifth.
Craig Lowndes was out first in the repaired Triple Eight Holden, with the top ten shootout reduced to nine cars following the withdrawal of Garth Tander/Warren Luff’s #2 Holden Racing Team.
Lowndes set a strong target lap with a time of 2:07.7304, with James Moffat next out in the Nissan Altima, but was a hundredth down on Lowndes’ time with a mistake in the first sector.
Next on track was Jack Perkins in the Charlie Schwerkolt Racing Ford Falcon, who was looking set to improve on Lowndes’ time after the first two sectors, but a mistake at the final corner Murray’s saw him lose almost half a second and qualify behind Lowndes and Moffat’s cars.
Next up was Jason Bright in the Brad Jones Racing #8 Holden Commodore, who went fastest of all with a time of 2:07.0431, seven-tenths of a second clear of Lowndes’ Triple Eight car.
Scott McLaughlin was next in the Volvo Polestar Racing S60, with the New Zealander grabbing the top spot temporarily with the first time in the 2:06s, setting a time of 2:06.7782.

Next up was last year’s Bathurst winner Mark Winterbottom in the Ford Performance Racing Falcon, and although the Ford driver made a mistake in The Dipper, he recovered to go faster than McLaughlin by just over a tenth of a second.
Dale Wood was next in the Britek Motorsport Holden, who was only able to go sixth fastest, 1.3 seconds down on Winterbottom’s time.
Shane Van Gisbergen was next out in the Tekno Autosports Holden Commodore, with the Kiwi acing every sector to go fastest with a time of 2:06.3267.
Fabian Coulthard was last to run in the Brad Jones Racing Lockwood-backed car, but the lap record holder from yesterday was only able to replicate the pace, setting a time of 2:07.0568 to go fifth fastest, although he still maintains the all-time lap record.
Shane Van Gisbergen will therefore start the 2014 Bathurst 1000 from pole position for Tekno Autosports, ahead of Ford Performance Racing’s Mark Winterbottom and Scott McLaughlin’s Volvo.

Outstanding effort from VOVO and the 21 year old Scott McLaughlin, a thoroughly nice young man with a very bright future, thanks to Gary Rogers Motosport!
Only one Nissan in the top 10 and no AMG/'Erebus' (aka Mercedes) through.
Must admit that those flatplane crank engines sound beautiful, both Ford and GM power sound very stone age.
:encouragement:

One of most unsatisfying Bathursts I can remember, over run with far too many idiotic CAMS (so-called) stewards rulings!

If this link works it contains some interesting interviews and many of the 'incidents' that took place over the four days.
Frankly, I think Formula 1 has more sensible regulations, well, almost.
Really sad about the fate of the VOLVO team, Scott McLaughlin and Alex Premat were outstanding, Premat putting in a brilliant first segment.
However, the winning Ford drivers deserved the victory, they came from dead last on the grid, good stuff.
:triumphant:

Being from NASCAR land and spending a couple of months in OZ, I must say Bathurst was truly remarkable. This is the Aussie Daytona 500. The track is the most entertains I have seen. The downhill run was truly terrifying.

I wish NASCAR was like this. The cars looked like real cars you see on the street, 4 doors and all. ForDs, Chevys (Holden's), Volvos, Mercedes, Nissans, et al. Speeds comparable to NASCAR with really nice sound tracks.

Although I find Aussie tv really strange, the coverage was really excellent, with an all day programming.

Really wish NASCAR was like this!

Congrats to Australia for a truly geat and entertains race. I now see what all the hoopla regarding V-8 Supercars is about?
