In September 1947, the actor Tyrone Power started on his C-47 tour of Africa and Europe. According to the book “North Star Over My Shoulder”, by Robert Buck, the adventure began at the old Howard Hughes airport, just a bit north of present day KLAX. The first leg took them to Dallas, supposedly. That's what Buck says in his book. But, the very next paragraph starts: “as we approached San Juan...” So, there must be an airport called San Juan near Dallas? Maybe there is a suburb of Dallas called San Juan? I can't confirm either one. But, the next stop, from “Dallas/San Juan” was Georgetown, Guyana. The distance from Dallas (KFTW) to Georgetown, Guyana (SYCJ) is 2690 NM. Buck says it took then 12 hours and 50 minutes. That would have required an average ground speed of 210 knots. In a C-47? Possible with a good tail wind perhaps, but it doesn't help me figure where his first stop was. Where the heck is “San JunDallas”?

Here's a pic from my goculations in Plan-G. It shows the range, from Georgetown Guyana, that is possible at 200 knots GS and 150, with a 12 hr 50 min flight time. Something doesn't add up...

Naismith, it looks like your link didn't make it... hate it when that happens! One possibility is that the actual route was Dallas > San Juan, Puerto Rico > Georgetown, Guyana, and Buck, in his book, made a typo. The distance between Dallas and San Juan Puerto Rico is 1893 NM, doable in 12.8 hrs going 150 knots GS. In his book, Buck says that the flight from San Juan to Georgetown was 12.8 hrs. Not possible if we're talking about Puerto Rico, but a almost perfect for a C-47 if we're talking about Dallas > San Juan...
