Hi Everybody -

I dusted of the CFS2 disk today for the first time in a while and was quickly reminded of why I had taken it out of rotation in the first place - the default runway textures (Coral, Dirt, Steel Mat) have gone AWOL and are now displaying as shown in the attached screenshot from Mission Builder. I've tried finding the base textures again but have not had any success in getting them to appear, even after replacing the current texture folder in its entirety with an earlier backup copy I made back in 2011. Does anyone have suggestions on how to fix this or know what I'm doing wrong? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Did you replace the SCENEDB\runways\texture folder or the main texture folder?

The main texture folder - I didnt figure that the SCENEDB folder would be effected but I'll try that as well.

EDIT-The SCENEDB>Runway>Texture folder was the culprit. Somewhere along the line it was either moved or deleted or otherwise fooled around with. Everything looks to be working now. Thanks! :wavey:

You also need to place the runway.bgl into the inf\scenery folder. You also need to copy all of the BMPs in the runways\texture to the inf\texture folder. If you do not have the runway.bgl into the inf\scenery folder you will get object not found error when you play the mission out side of Mission Builder. The textures are also need in the inf\texture folder or the runways will be un-textured like your Mission Builder screen shots.

Ok, thanks for the pointer - just made all the transfers so everything should be good to go now. Thanks again

I'm not sure how Microsoft messed up the logic for the runways like they did but they did.

they must have had a couple people working on it. or had plans to do something else and just never followed through with it. Who knows.

My guess is unfinished. If you open the runway2b_mat_sq.dp you will see this

[MISC_DATA]
unit_family=4
category=34

[airbase]
allegiance=0
units_across=2
number_runways=2
takeoff_start_pos=-450,0
takeoff_stop_pos=1600,200
landing_start_pos=5000,350
landing_touchdown_pos=550,0
landing_stop_pos=-250,0

[runway.0]
pos_north=-22
pos_east=-4
length=1290
width=150
heading=0
surface_type=66

[runway.1]
pos_north=-18
pos_east=-9
length=880
width=150
heading=133
surface_type=66

While thinking about those place-able runways....

9970

This has been a side idea I have been meaning to do. It uses the stock place-able runways with a polygon placed under them that has a dirt texture and alpha channel. This make a nice runway you can place in any mission that you need a non takeoff/landing airbase.

I don't know if this is somthing any one would like/need?

Thats not bad Allen. Actually for a quick runway it looks nice.

I think with the proper hand edit you could make it a working runway just for the mission.

You can do that but I was thinking more use full as something to place as eye candy.

I ended up editing the dirt and steel mat used by the place-able runways. Textue for the fixed stock runways are found in the main texture folder so these changes do no effect them. The dirt was too dark and steel mat looked like crap. Screen of the stock crap steel mat below....

Agreed! Great for instant airfields - I could find plenty of uses for something like this.

I got all of the single runways done. Have to do the other 2 types.

Allen

Got the others done. The screen shots don't show all 15 place-able runways.

I'll work on getting them pack up for upload.

A new entry has been added to Add-Ons Library, category CFS 2 Other Add-Ons

Description: These runways can be placed on any flat land you can fine in Mission Builder. The runways have dirt base around them that blend into the surrounding scenery. With use of other objects you can make nice airbases to attack or defend or work as nice eye candy for missions. This includes all 15 stock runways remade with a dirt base.

To check it out, rate it or add comments, visit Based Runways.zip (http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/local_links.php?linkid=18655&catid=17)
The comments you make there will appear in the posts below.

Allen,

This is great work you've done to not only address a user's concerns, but also develop an effective solution to then share with us all. Well done! :wiggle: :applause: :wavey:

They look great Allen.

For Mission Builders:
Just remember they are placeable. You won't have a workable runway untill you add the Airbase.dat. Now having said that you could add it to the mission to show Airbases being built then later Use them as an active bases.

So do we have any SeaBee equiptment?

These are more than just a texture updates. It will give 15 new runway to place anywhere.

Thanks Allen for this new eye-candy of yours!

Did I understand correctly they can't be used as real runways but only as scenery GSL objects?

I was considering the possibility to use one of yours new straight runways to correct Achim's Italian scenery Ghedi as shown in both maps attached below. Achim did not include Montichiari runway in his scenery and I would like to do it, since it was there during WWII.

Cheers!

........IIRC didn't "Roy" do some heavy trucks and cranes back awhile ago? Also I seem to recall someone making some construction equipment and posting it. Just can't remember who ( as the old song goes) , where or when.

ADDENDUM:
found the Seabees'. They are here; http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/local_links.php?catid=17&linkid=11443

You can use it as an airfield but you would have to use it as GSL then add the airbase.dat info. you can use the MKAFD to add the bgl for the runway.

Yes.

What you can do is use Martin Wright object place. http://www.mwgfx.co.uk/Cfsops/Modules/object_placer/object_placer.htm This seem to work but not the most user friendly on my PC. I'll attach Martin Wright object placer and the needed BGLC.exe.

First go into SCENEDB\weapons\scenery and delete the filelist.dat. It cause object placer to crash when you change to Library.

Now in object placer set the place to save the .CSV. I would save to the same place as that has the object placer and BGLC.exe. In the Object box change to Library and in the drop down and go down to the R. My runway end with _based. Put in the needed long and lat .etc. You will need to change the scale to SCALE=000135000h.

After that hit add and build. On my PC it failed to build a BGL. It say can not open file C:\Documents so I had to drop and drag the .CSV on to the BGLC.exe. This will give you a .BGL to use ingame.

If that worked for you. You will need a AFD setup so you can take off from it in FreeFlight or QC. MkAFD will do it for you.

http://www.mwgfx.co.uk/programs/progs.htm

Put in the needed data. This will be the starting point when your on the ground. Once done make the BGL and this will give you a .BGL to use ingame.
