For those who own the JF Chipmunk, an SP has been released. Many thanks to the Just Flight team!

Dear Sir/Madam, We thought we'd let you know that we have just uploaded new software for the DHC-1 Chipmunk and also the DHC-1B-2 Bubble Canopy package. The new software fixes all reported issues where possible, and a new Download is now available for each aircraft.

If you log in to your Just Flight account and click on 'Your Orders' you will be able to download the new software for each aircraft - please update the DHC-1 Chipmunk BEFORE the DHC-1B-2 Bubble Canopy variant. Best wishes,
The Just Flight crew

Yes its a new version of the product due to the numerous improvements/fixes. Uninstall the existing version and then install the new version after downloading it from your account.

Early days for me as have been out aviating today (weather was too nice to stay indoors and do housework!)....but nice to see that the engine cowling has been refined and that the tailwheel moved to its correct position. Flown one of the British civilian examples (with now the underwing registration) and an RAF machine. Take off has improved a lot, bit still finding brakes a little fierce. Entry speeds for loops and rolls, were just under that quoted in the notes and from what I can remember (but still ok), but found initially and it may be due to my home setup, that cruise and landing speeds were high - any excuse to buy a new stick or to give up completely! Would have liked it to roll on a little upon touchdown, but hey these are just my own personal thoughts.

I appauld Just Flight for listening to us with our comments and suggestions and making the necessary changes where possible and applicable. There can't be many people out there that follow these leads.

Going back for more tomorrow,

Happy Landings,

Martin

She's a real lovely

Question... is the mixture lever suppose to be set to the back position... I thought it it was forward position

bazzar
July 2nd, 2014, 20:50
That is correct, we had it going the wrong way. In fact some machines had a small lug on the throttle to catch the mixture lever and carry it back so that for novice pilots mixture was always returned to full for landing.

Got it now. Thanks to Bazzar, Martyn and all at JF Towers. Making all those changes must be a lot harder than just saying "If you're not happy we'll give you a refund", but it's a lot better.

Hi Peter

Still very much enjoying your Meteors for the Royal Danish Air Force. Lovely paints, bringing back lots of memories.

Should you once again feel tempted to revive the former glory of the Danish Airforce, I may in all modesty suggest the following

Hi,
I wasn't sure what to make of the JF Chippy when it first appeared on/in the forum with all the feed back that was being given, however when I started reading the various reports on what the new update did my CC got the better of me and went and got it, and hey as my post says "Once in a while a little gem appears" and I will be honest now this is a little gem. The detail is well can I say OTT. The attention to detail is awesome. I think this is a must little Aircraft to have in your hanger. I just recently got the new ORBX North California scenery along with the Monterey Regional Airport and what a joy it is to take to the skies and taken in the Scenery. Just Flight I thank you for one great little Aircraft. Timm

If it is not too much trouble, could some proficient and prolific repainter please upload a polished aluminum, with no markings, repaint for this wonderful little aircraft? I'm sure I'm not alone when I say I enjoy personalizing my aircraft with some modifications to existing paints, but I just don't have the skills, time or patience to do the work I see uploaded for some of my favorites. I'd really like to have an all aluminum repaint as a base to add a few minor touches.

Thanks

The big problem with that is the Chipmunk wasn't an all aluminum aircraft! The control surfaces and rear sections of the main wings were fabric covered.

What has the update changed?

Off the top of my head, the engine cowling has been rebuilt, the wind sound removed and that for the stall warner as well. The tail wheel repositioned in its correct position, the aeroplane now swings the correct way on take off and the flight model amended, although personally feel this could be further tweaked.

Some of the textures have also been amended to show correct positioning of military and civilian serials and registrations although I note that the in house JustFlight example still doesn't have the British civilian registration under the port wing.

Probably a lot more items but at work at the moment (on my break!) and not sat infront of my sim PC!

Cheers,

Martin

I'm sorry my thoughts were not clear. I just assumed my request implied the fabric areas would be simulated as being painted with aluminum dope. I was just thinking how beautiful the airframe is on G-AKDN. And I would like to see that aircraft without the color paint on it.

Thanks for the input.

There are many improvements in the upgrade but perhaps the most significant is the one which affects repainters. In the uprade pack, the fuselage, tail and engine cover are all on one tile. The airframe basically got a total remap so the old paintkit will NOT work with the new upgrade. A second updated paintkit is provided.Painters will find this a lot easier to use.

Many thanks for the upgrade and I can confirm that the new paintkit is much easier to use! I will be gradually working my way through the paints that I did for the Rick Piper version and also that I will not be doing any aluminium-only paints! Two reasons : one, I am not in John Terrell's league when it comes to aluminium rendition and two, most of the silver schemes were painted with silver aluminium dope overall. I hope other painters will get cracking on this one - there are so many schemes to cover and the model deserves it!
My next paint will be the aircraft operated by the Classic Air Force, based at Newquay, Cornwall.

Just had a little flight with Peter Watkins' latest repaint - the Classic Air Force's Chipmunk APLO. Matt Wynn kindly did a repaint of this for Rick's version, so now we have two on the in-house simulator!

What with our new scenery and the generosity of people here - Rick, Dave Garwood and Rob Richardson, we hope that what has been created with the thanks of local companies, Saitek and Chillblast, is something that is educational, but fun at the same time. We want people to go away having learnt something about aviation and treating the software not as a game, but as a learning tool to further their interest. What is interesting is that the majority of our virtual pilots, have never seen Horizon scenery or know of FSX or TrackIR. But then you get the kids that know it all and fly it from the outside view as per 'Afterburner'. This we try to make them not do, as then the whole experience is a complete waste of time for them and ourselves.

The Carrier has been supplied by those nice people at FlyingStations and represents HMS Illustrious. In 1946, an Auster Autocrat of Aeroplane Magazine was the first civilian aircraft to land on a Royal Navy Carrier and so we have Dave's painted up as G-AERO (again by Matt Wynn) and this sits two miles off Watergate Bay. As a challenge we have a short scenario where the 'pilot' attempts to land the Auster on the deck. Only three people have managed it so far. Something a little different, but then historic and hopefully accurate.

Best wishes,

Martin

Anyone else having trouble with the commands for opening the cowling (SHIFT+E+2) and removing the pilots/tie-down (SHIFT+E+3)? It works perfectly on other planes, except this one. I have tried loading a default plane first but that doesn't seem to work. Even reassigning a different key doesn't work (even if it does work with all other planes). Could this be the gauges flooding the keystrokes?

Yes. They seem only to work if the engine is running, and when they do work the sounds are the same as for the cockpit opening and closing. I also had a problem with the GPS gauge, but I have cured that.

Hi,
Just a very small observation here on the great new texture but I noticed the there is no yellow LIFT - TURN - PUSH textures to the 2 release levers inside and outside of the cockpit. Was this just missed? Easily fixed though by just copying texture "JF_Chipmunk_fusepartsB_t" from another texture folder and adding to this one . Timm

A silly mistake on my part! Nice to see a criticism that actually contains a solution to the problem - bravo!
The only problem with putting that texture in the main folder David is that not all Chipmunks had them painted yellow! Many were painted red or grey or blacl or just silver although many were painted yellow. The US paint I have just completed had them painted red.
I better put up a picture of it. Ex-RAF WZ860 and sold off in May 1975, was briefly G-BDCH and then sold to the USA. Has now been restored and fitted with a bubble canopy, painted in RCAF markings.

Hi,
First of can I say what a great texture this is, but have very very small question to peterwatkins2, Was there a reason for reducing the texture image from 4096X4096 to 2048X2048? I have found that reducing the size you are reducing the quality down as well. IE The various text markings like round the front part of the engine canopy along with the battery text.etc they are just blurred and not readable, like a default texture. However I have got round this by increasing your texture to 4096 put back into the paintkit, transfered the text marking over to your texture, deleted the old ones and hey presto everything now readable. Again this was just a question on your great texture which I am using as my default one on the Chippy. Timm

Timm, there is a good reason why the textures were re-sized - DXTBMP automatically does this when saving a bmp to dds! I never realised this until you pointed it out! I have always used dxtbmp but will have to change now. I will use GIMP 2 in future to create dds files (I have just installed the relevant plugin). I always use GIMP to create bumpmaps. Looks like I will be using it a lot more. My main paint program is PaintShop Pro X5 which does not create dds files. Thanks for highlighting this for me.

Hi Kevin,
Yes, I have CF-JAG and N4KV on my list. Most of the US and Canadian Chipmunks are either finished in RCAF/CAF yellow(which I will be painting anyway) or are - in my opinion - those horrible flat-engined squared tail monstrosities, which I will not paint on a real Chippy!

OK, will have a go. Unfortunately you cannot just throw the existing paint on to the bubble version as the gear, Fuselage parts and wings all need revision due to texture mapping issues - particularly the right wing!

OK, Dc
Have finished revising N26JH and have uploaded to FlightSim.com. Ironically the aircraft has now been fitted with a bubble canopy and repainted in yellow with RCAF markings - strange, as she was an ex-RAF machine built in England!

Hi Peter

That is looking absolutely fantastic......:applause:

Tomorrow saturday, I will be going to EKVJ Stauning, for the annual vintage air show.

I am almost sure, that there will be an RDAF chipmunk present, and I can take as many pictures as possible of the stencil markings.

Finally finished the RDAF paint. Many thanks to Soeren Jensen and Ole Rossel whom provided a wealth of info regarding the stencil markings. Without their help I could not have completed this paint. Just uploaded to FlightSim.

Hi Peter

Just seen and downloaded your RDAF Chipmunk. What a pleasant surprise to come home to. :applause:

I must say, that you have put together all the bits and pieces, and made an absolutely stunning repaint of our former trainer. It is just spot on.

I shall very much appreciate it.

Best regards

OK Roger, will take a look at the paintkit - I quite like the idea of a Queen's Flight Heron!
