Thank you for this very professional looking guide!

At a quick glance the only thing that popped out was=Maximum pre-rendered frame 3 was entered three times in a row!

Other than that jolly good!

Again, thank you!!

Well spotted, Batman! Many thanks!

Duly corrected - along with a few typos that passed me by!

Thanks! I'm an long-time NVI user myself so that was all pretty familiar territory! However - if there are AMD/ATI/CCC users out there, feedback will be gratefully received as I'm not able to test the CCC settings myself.

UPDATE: v1.05 (revised Bufferpools section).
UPDATE: v1.06 (added FSPS Fiber Accelerator and FSWC sections).

Adam, I was surprised that in the DX10 guide for DSR you recommend removing all AA effects from FSX when using DSR. When I tried that the image quality that DSR produced was greatly diminished to the point of being no value over standard DX10 AA/GSAA settings. I found that using DSR with the Fixer AA settings that one uses 'normally' within the Fixer (sans GSAA) is what puts the icing on the DSR cake. But hey, that's me.

To be honest, I'm not entirely sure what combination of what works best any more! I've fiddled mine to destruction!

Is there a way we can see all the releavt settings you have for Fixer/NVI/nVidia CP? I'd love to give your settings a go. I can then rewrite that section (!).

Uh oh - I've tweaked too far. Now I'm getting a black aircraft selection screen and worse, once into the sim the whole screen is black. Tried deleting the fsx.cfg and let it rebuild with no diff. Tried setting Nvidea Inspector to default with no result, even reset the Nv to as close to default as seems possible.

Try (temporarily) disabling any DSR settings in the nVidia CP.

No, that had no effect either. I'm a hairs breadth away from just abandoning the whole thing. I wasted/spent several hours yesterday trying to unravel this problem with no luck. It's supposed to be a joyful pastime. I'm sick of it.

I've gotten a black FSX screen once or twice and what I have done is simply cycled through the windowed and full screen mode (alt-v-f) once or twice giving the screen an opportunity to load.

But, what led up to the black screen. Did you check the box in Steve's fixer that said apply DX10 to aircraft screen? I haven't done that and don't think it is necessary.

Did you follow the "how to" guide step-by-step? It doesn't take that long and that is what I would do if I was getting the "black screen"! Don't get discouraged...we've all been there. Good luck.

Hi Captains,

I have read Adam's "How-to" guide. Please tell me, because I'm not sure - in case 1/2 Refresh Rate, should I set limit 30 fps in Inspector AND 31 in FSX options simultaneously?

Lucas

Absolutely right - yes. The FSX function is NOT a frame rate limiter. It's a "target" value that tells FSX to configure itself and do everything possible to try and achieve the required frame rate. The general thinking seems to be to set it to one higher than your locked (NVI) frame rate limiter.

However - some systems appear to work better with the FSX target framerate set to "unlimited".

Thank you Adam.

I must say that I’m little desperate... I don’t know what I can also do to improve time of ground texture sharpening in external view. In external view, I have to wait 10, 12, even 15 sec. (and sometimes more) to ground texture became sharp. Of course, textures stright under aircraft became sharp quite fast. I have in mind photo scenery, for example: Drzewiecki’s Warsaw City or freeware Holland (nl2000), default ground scenery too.
Every test I did is on PMDG777, at 200IAS, at FL200, over Drzewiecki’s Warsaw City photo scenery.
I have tried with Poul’s “How to” guide (Poul even prepared FSX.CFG file for me), but situation is still not satisfied to me. Maybe I want “impossible” :(
Yesterday, I did some tweaks with your guide...
...and the best result of blurries eliminating (however still not satisfied for me ;) ) I reached with following settings:

As you see, a lot of settings are different then you suggest in your guide, but when I set the same as in the guide, overall performance isn’t good. For example: with both limiters (Inspector and internal) I have to set 60 cm textures (7,15 or 30 cm have impact on FPS). Other example: [I]Anisotropic Filter Optimization and Anisotropic Sample Optimization I have OFF, because I think that is worst with these options ON. Maximum Pre-rendered frames - I have on "Use 3d app settings" -> I think it's better.

FPS is about 20 in VC and 30 in external, although - for example - at EHAM by nl2000 with Holland photo, FPS drops to 10-12 in VC :(
(maybe should I experiment with BUFFERS).

Generally, I fly only PMDG machines (NGX, 777, JS41).
My configuration: OS Vista 64, FSX SP2, UTX, XClassWorld, ASN, REX4, GEX, FSCaptain, vRoute, DX10SteveFixer.
Hardware: AsRock P67 Pro3, i5 2500K@4.3GHz, 8GB RAM, Gigabyte GTX660Ti 2GB, HDD SATAIII 7200rpm, power supply XFX 550W.

If anyone could advice me, what can I change in my settings to improve blurries eliminating with no FPS loss (or even increase a bit), I’ll be very thankful.

With regards,
Lucas

Ps. Maybe you have nl2000 freeware scenery (EHAM and all holland regions)? What VAS you have in external view in PMDG aircraft (ex. 777 or NGX)? I have 3.5-3.7 GB (with DX10) – it isn’t good, but maybe it’s normal..?

Adam.

I've been pleased with the results using your "How-to" guide with the nVidia graphics cards I run on a couple computers. (I also am using Steve's DX10 Fixer.) I don't think there will be any EUREKA moments due to the nature of the beast - an almost infinite number of combinations of cpus, operating systems, graphics cards, motherboards, add-ons... The only way to improve is through many small tweaks which your guide is quite helpful at providing.

My next use of your guide will be on an AMD FX8350 / HD7850 combo computer I haven't used much since last spring (spring around here is in April / May). I'll report any reportable events during that process.

Thanks for the efforts you put into the How-to Guide.

Adam - one small additional note. I changed my FPS setting in FSX to unlimited and gained another bump in screen beauty! Although I have no objective proof, from my subjective perspective it appears that my system is one that benefits from this tweak. Thanks again, your "how-to" contains real good stuff!

It's a funny one, that particular "tweak". It seems to vary from sysytem to system. I have a friend with an almost identical setup to mine - "unlimited" works well for him but, for me, it just introduces a mass of blurries.

Adam.

Adam, thanks for the updated guide. However, in Paul's previous version he advised setting the frame rate limiter in NVI to off and to set the target FPS (30/31) in FSX. I've read in a number of places that it's better to do it this way than to set a frame rate in NVI. Why the change in the new guide?

This appears to vary from system to system. I did a lot of testing on this - and found that setting a framerate in NVI then framerate+1 in FSX to be the best option - and I think it also helps with vsync in multi-monitor situations.

BTW: The HowTo has just been updated to 1.08a: http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/showthread.php?88271-DX10-quot-How-to-quot-Guide-a-new-home!&p=892887&viewfull=1#post892887
