View Full Version : VSWXR - Very Simple Weather Radar

Disclaimer:

THIS WEATHER RADAR IS NOT ACCURATE AT ALL! AND IT WILL NEVER BE!

So now that we got this cleared up, here's what this thing is all about:

- XML gauge using simulation variables
- For 2D panels or VC radar scopes (equipped with a gauge polygon)
- Can distinguish between six cloud states based on ambient visibility and deviation from standard pressure at sea level*
- Movement of the clouds in the scope determined by airspeed and wind along fuselage
- The screen is updated once a second (hooray for timers!)
- Tweaked for use with FSXWX, but might also work with other weather engines
- Accuracy: 50% Garbage, 50% something that could somehow very well happen outside
- Is probably really nothing more than a glorified eyecandy moisture detector
- You'll get something animated and remotely working instead of that empty void of a radar scope somewhere on your panel, so gimme a break.

*The gauge logic is roughly as follows:
Low visibility = clouds -> Low pressure = thicker clouds, high pressure = thinner clouds -> radar scope

More information in the readme.

So a Weather Radar gauge that shows what it wants to. . .not what is actually there. Shoot, count me in, that's no different than some weather engines that do the same thing, lol.

I think this is an improvement over whatever our local forecasters use!

It's not that the logic behind swapping out the animated bitmaps depicting various cloud coverages is not elaborate, it's just that that's all I could do with the available XML simulation variables.
If you keep in mind that it only works for your current altitude, you will get something that works in 50% (or more) of conditions. At least that was my experience when testing it at random locations of the USA last night.

But as I've said, it's mostly eye candy. And you can perfectly complain about its inaccuracy on these long, boring cross-country flights. Which counts as something, doesn't it?

Probably just about as good as we had in the days of the DH-125 anyway. :dizzy:

Thanks for this, Bjoern!

I've changed the link in the first post to version 1.1.

"So a Weather Radar gauge that shows what it wants to. . .not what is actually there." Used to fly DC8-71's in real life that did the same thing. Used to make flying in weather challenging at best.

Nice work Bjoern.

I will try to use in the Tu-154B2.

Version 1.2 is out. The old version would stop depicting cloud coverage after 10 minutes or so, this one will (hopefully) run endlessly.
