View Full Version : Rami!!! Trains in CFS2!!!

Rami, I was reading the thread that was started about the new Italian scenery and some of the guys were talking about getting a moving train in CFS2. Well, that got me to thinking about some DCG Campaigns that came out back in 2002. It was a big deal back then, because of the great things that would come with it. It was the Kursk, Crimea and Poland 39 campaigns that Ken Stallings and Co had put together. And I found the cd's that Paul Hauschildt had sent me.
And reading about DCG on one of the cd's, I came across this statement-"Dynamic Campaign Generator version 6.1.8 for CFS2
This is a special version of DCG custom built by Paul Lowengrin for the DCG Crimean Campaign. This version of DCG facilitates the use of realistic looking moving trains within the campaign."

So getting moving trains in CFS2 is possible, but I have no clue as to how it is done. So if these campaigns are still available somewhere, they might find out how they make it possible!

I found a Vichy France campaign on the cd also, didn't even remember that one,lol

Eddie,

You can make a moving train with Wolfi's rail cars and tracks by Canion....and that old Vichy campaign has been upgraded substantially. In fact, Skylane just released a whole campaign on the conflict that covers both major sides!

Hi Rami and Eddie,

let me grab the opportunity to state that, if we want to brings credible trains in CFS2 missions, we desperately need longer railtrack sections from our addon object designers. Canion's tracks are fine, but they are so short that a GSL file gets overloaded very quickly if one wants to reproduce a railroad of any length.

Take for example my rendition of Reggio Emilia and the railroad bridge over the Po river at Piacenza, with the train station nearby, attached here:

and see how many railroad sections I had to use for them. At first, I had thought to draw the entire length of the Milano-Bologna, two-track railroad, which was under constant tactical attacks in 1944/45, but I had to give up such an idea real quickly!

Ok, thanks to you both for the info!! I wonder if anyone is doing DCG campaigns anymore? I haven't tried one in years!

At some point we need someone to add the VTP railways to the scenery.

Then we could add either the API's or add gsl models for those areas that need more detail.

As far as moving trains go, I don't think we can have them without them being added to a mission. Unless we make a HUGH animated model. That would probably kill our frame rate and not be able to be destroyed.

As I dig deeper into the CFS2 inner workings I'm seeing the limitations more and more.

If we had a programmer in the group that could find away to use other parts of the FS programming to improve CFS2 then maybe we could do more. It would be nice to take some of the .dlls or moduals from FS2004 and get them to work in CFS2. maybe add in some of the AI logic and other things.

Oh Well. It is what it is.

VTP lines are still constrained to about 4.5 meters per pixel. This is about 15 feet for those of us not used to meters. The rail bed is about that width... you'd never see the rails using VTP lines that reflect real world measurements. (A ranch-style house would be about 2x4 pixels).

Just for interest the FS 2002 Royal Albert Bridge over the River Tamar near Plymouth has a moving train which works in CFS 2 but as John says the scenery is indestructible.

that looks kool. doen't fit WWI or WWII but still looks interesting.

Interesting this and something I thought of getting into some time ago.

Two main options, using old api's with a scenery creator to get a moving train into the scnery. But I bet this would be FR hungry and not look that good.

Possibly the best option is using FS Rail...take a look at the Freeflight/AB Squad site (below link)...

I have it.

I have no clue on how to get it set for CFS2.

I've played with it a little. If you think that you can figure it out then I'd be willing to help.

I know a couple of the guys would help with repaints and so on.

All we have to do is sort the track and other bits to those that fit WWII and WWI. Maybe on through Korea.

I started on a section near the lower Rilly La Montagne railway tunnel. I found the whole thing very time consuming. but I was 'fumbling around in the dark' sorta speak.
