View Full Version : Untextures squares - tweak advice please

nemokin

I have been able to complete a few flights in my NGX over Aerosoft add-on airports with around 17-30 ish frame rate
thanks to many advices and NI/FSX.cfg adjustments.
I think I'm feeling comfortable with the setting now, except one item.

As you can see in the photo below, I have periodical untextured squares appearing before they turn to
the textures they are supposed to be. They are light blue over the water and black over land.

Which adjustments can I make to solve/test this?

Hi Nemokin:

Can you show your fsx.cfg here, please, along with your system specs and a screenshot of your Nvidia Inspector?

This is fixable, but there can be more than one cause, and more than one fix!

All the Best,

pj

Paul,

First of all, I appreciate your help always.
Having you to help certainly made my jump into DX10 a lot easier,
less stressful, and learning process worthwhile.

Below is my copy-paste of FSX.cfg
I hesitated to paste such a long lines of FS jargon, but thought it will be easier than some attachment.

Also attached is a photo capture of my NI.

My system specs:
i7-2700K overclocked to 4.5GHz
GTX770 (2GB) - thanks to your advice, I just bought this card a few days ago. Upgrade from 560Ti.
FSX Acceleration and Win7 both on primary SSD.

I hope they help.

Hi Nemokin;

Well - here you go. Here (https://www.dropbox.com/s/hflo9ndunnypze0/nemokin_fsx_chgd.txt)'s the modified fsx.cfg.

I've rem'd out a number of settings (they can be added back later), and have modified some others. Try it as is, and then let us know what you find.

Inspector looks fine - except - that you ought to make your AF setting 16x instead of 8x.

The GPU is a good balance for the 4.5 gig proc, and you may try the bufferpool settings I've included below your original.

All the Best,

pj

Thank you for taking the time to check my cfg.

A few questions before I try it.
1. I have ORBX ground textures, and I've read somewhere that
Fiber Frame Time Fraction shouldn't go lower than 0.20.
I see that you've modified my 0.27 to 0.15. I am of course
willing to first try and see how it will look, but am I generally
okay with 0.15 when using the ORBX texture?

2. I am not clear about your talking about "rem'd".
I see your inputs with "//" in front. Some with previous number setting
next to your setting. These are clear, such as the case with the above
Fiber Frame Time Fraction example.
Then, there are some "//" entries but without any changes from what I had.
Examples would be Night Threshold and day threshold below.
What am I supposed to do with them?

Hi, Nemokin - all good questions, but nothing which isn't easy understood: all good programming should be documented, with most programmers adding their comments as they create a line, or a function, and depending upon the language (C, C++, Pascal, Basic, Visual C, DOS, etc.,) there will always be some way to "hide " the comments from the compiler, so it doesn't see them. When DOS was new - the "REM" was used, meaning "This is a remark", and so almost every one since has been referred to as a "REM", as in "This line has been rem'd out, because it's just a comment".
Some languages us a single forward slash "/" - some use a colon ":" - some use a semi-colon ";", and DOS uses "rem". Some use " ' "... In FSX most of the cfg files use the double forward slash as the "REM" command, as you've seen in your config. You can see similar if you look at the SweetFX_settings.txt (https://www.dropbox.com/s/69r1nf6w75j26b7/SweetFX_settings.txt).

So...

1). FFTF and Orbx.. I am using 0.1, and go as low as I can without causing ground blurring. Every machine is different, so an "exact" number is not possible. The lower it is set - the smoother the sim will be.

2). Referring back to the explanation of "//" above.

//NIGHT_THRESHOLD=0
//DAY_THRESHOLD=65535

..... Quite often a parameter may have an unexpected side effect, and because these two parameters are not "known" generally (I have only seen Rob Ainscough use them, and he is a bona-fide programmer like Steve - he understands any possible impact as a result of adding them). We don't have that luxury, and so - out they go, (REM'd) until you have the system working the way you want it to. You can put them back in - one at a time - then test it. One should not experiment with unknown parameters while the system is being setup - ok!

All the Best,

pj

The rem - the "//" hides the line from the compiler - so it doesn't matter. They become - effectively - just comments.

Leave them there - or remove/delete them - it doesn't matter. If you want to re-enable them sometime later, you just delete the "//", and they work again.

Paul,

Reporting back on my flight after applying your CFG changes and NI settings.
In summary, my flight was very smooth, no squares that were my original problem,
and my frame rate was stable at around 30 (FSX set limit).

Thank you so much for your help so far.

I flew my usual PMDG NGX, from Aerosoft Munich to Aerosoft Barcelona
using ActiveSky NEXT and REX4 Textures (1024 pix clouds). Weather was few clounds
at both airports, so not much stress on PC from weather aspect. Also
the flight was done during daytime.

Enroute was pretty much FR=30 all the way. Departure was around 20-28 which is
about +5 to +8 from pre-CFG changes.
Landing was around 17-22, can't compare since I have not flown into LEBL since
applying DX10.

I think I will stick with this setting for a while, fly some other weather scenarios
in both day and night to see how stable this is.

If/when I want to adventure and see other settings for better visual (although
I am already happy with the visual), what do you recommend I touch first?
Just thinking ahead a little.

I can't do this for you Nemokin: It's my pleasure to be able to help you get the problem fixed, and that you can report back such as you have here, but for more - you need to read guides and experiment, and test, test, test, test, test! Just backup the cfg and Inspector before you do that - ok! :encouragement:

Paul,

You're right.
Apologies for using you for my FS crutch too much.
You got me started in the right direction
and in the process I've learned a lot.
I will adventure on my own now, test test test and
I should learn more with that.
Hopefully I will gain experience to someday help a newbie
as you did for me. Paying forward I suppose.

Thanks a million!

Thank you, Nemokin. I hope you can do that too!
