View Full Version : Changing to DX10 but have performance problems

Hi Everyone.
Thanks Paul J for getting me sorted.

I purchased Steves DX10 fixer last week and followed the guide.
First thing I had was no anti analiazing even though I followed the guide, I kept going in and out of the sim and then all of a sudden it worked, I must of missed somethin but when I followed Paul J's guide in setting DX10 fixer & nvidia inspector up it suddenly worked.
Then I found I had really bad stuttering so I went into the FSX cfg and again following Paul J's guide added in the bufferpools = zero, highmem fix which strangely had removed itself, then disable pre load I started to get somewhere with the smoothness but still the frames are jumping around, in DX9 frames are locked to 30 in the sim and I get 29.9 and 30 all the time unless going into London Heathrow with traffic on, but in my test area the mountains of North wales 29.9 to 30 constant but I have blurries, I had blurries in DX9 but not as bad.
I read that you can set the sliders higher for the scenery with Photo scenery and if the higher resolution isn't there it can't render it so it renders what is there and also rendering photo scenery is supposed to be easier on the system as all it needs to do is load the picture not actually create it.
My nvidia driver is 335.23

Have you installed DX10. If not get the dx web installer from microsoft it will ensure all DX files are installed. Secondly if you have updated your video drivers fsx will see a new device and it will show in the CFG. If you only have one screen than you can delete the top first instance.

Good Morning, Sleight:

We do need to see a screenshot of your Inspector settings.

Here's the fsx.cfg (I think.... (it's the first time I've tried to attach something here))

I didn't see much of concern here, Sleight - more of "expectations" than problems. You're running 4.5 GHz. and, though you might think it's a fantastic speed - it's not. Even 5.0 gig will be pulled down if the sliders are not set appropriately. The more work you give the processor - the slower it will become. So....

I've pulled back a few that I consider too high, and - as you're running photoscenery I recommend you "try" a TBM of 400 instead of 120. (While we're on that subject - 80 is a "probably" a better size than 120 (when using normal scenery), but will need a couple of hours of accurate testing.)

I've changed the AA settings within the cfg - you need to set the DX10 Fixer AA to 4x.

The [Display] entry which ends with "GeForce GTX 780.0] is used by FSX when running in DX9 mode.
The [Display] entry which ends with "GeForce GTX 780.0.0] is used by FSX when running in DX10 mode. Leave both entries there.

As long as you're not running on Windows XP - then you have DX10. It's included in the OS, and you wouldn't be getting this cfg if it weren't! Also - as long as you have Windows Updates turned on - the version you have will be updatred too. If you doubt this - there's a link in the "How-To" guide to do just that. Permitting Windows to install it's updates is important, for many reasons, but you need to to be "in charge" of the process, as it will override some of the things you don't want it to!! - like the 780's drivers, for example!

Anyway - try it with these changes, then come back here and let us know how it works - ok!

Hi Paul: Thanks - it looks fine - but because we're trying to diagnose a problem I would remove the FXAA for the time being. It adds extra work for little gain.

When you have stuttering it's usually because the system has too much work to do, and parcels out the time in such a way as to create stuttering and.or low frames. The answer is to turn off/remove or reduce the various parameters or programs that impact framerate and workload. Sooner or later the sim will become smooth.

Here is a screenshot of the blurries I now have with the cfg changes, it is quite bad, it is of horizon photo scenery near Barmouth.

I went back to DX9 and my original DX9 cfg to check performance and on the earth simulations isle of man my frames were 29.7 to 30 locked at 30.

Here is my DX9 cfg, it runs smoothly just get some blurries but nothing like this one posted and frames are not skipping around all over the place.

Hmmmm... Sorry, Paul, I can't really compare an external shot of a Lightning at 7500 and 300 (very crisp aircraft and cloud textures) with a pretty fuzzy cockpit view in a Spit, because the zoom levels are very different; it conveys very little, and not having experience with photoscenery - it puts a limit on any real help that I can be.

Blurring and stuttering both have similar causes, (i.e. FFTF (eg - try FFTF of 55) and TBM (try 200)) but without having your setup on my machine and digging the problem out - my only recourse here is that you ask Steve himself on his blogsite (http://stevesfsxanalysis.wordpress.com/), or failing that - on his Avsim Fixer Support (http://forum.avsim.net/forum/644-the-official-dx10-scenery-fixer-support-forum/) forum. The other place for help, of course, would be the photoscenery vendor who created it, and or any of the DX10 guys that actually do use photoscenery. I do suggest you continue to monitor this thread in case such a guru shows up, but it's not common, and in the eighteen months I've spent beta testing, it has never come up.

Can anyone else suggest a cause, as I'm out of ideas?

This was based on advice not from your guide as such, but from that article (that I think you link to). Basically, the article asks you to assess/compare CPU and GPU speeds and set bufferpools accordingly. So ... setting bufferpools=0 isn't a "given".

Not sure whether you say that in your [excellent] guide!

Good Morning/Evening, Adam!

You're correct. I re-read pages 19 and 20, and there is little in the way of how to asses a "where to start" point... The problem arises from the pretty large combination of processors and video cards available. At one end - there's, say a GTX480 (which is still a good GPU) married to a Core2Duo E6xxx proc at 3.4 gig: this combo would work with UsePools=0, because the GPU is very capable when compared to that proc (and it's speed), but the "assess" part is still largely from experience or articles, or posts like this, and from the suggestions of others.

Moving up the scale a bit - suppose now we replace that proc with an overclocked Bloomfield 920, running at 4.4 gig? This time the proc is likely a match for the 480, and it might just be able to push the 480 harder than it can manage - causing spiking/artifacting... so we need to apply some brakes to the graphics pipeline, and we can do that by making FSX (you) manage the buffer configuration, with you creating a reject threshold to "tune the brakes", so - we will set UsePools=1, and do some testing for a reject threshold size. This gives FSX (and the proc) more work to do, so there will be some level of performance degradation.

Using that same proc and speed with a GTX560Ti would give a similar result - but if we upgraded the GPU to say, a 580 - we can set "UsePools=0" again. This will give us a boost in FSX performance because the GPU is managing the buffering, which, of course - frees up the FSX application, so that it effectively allows the use of more AI, cloud coverage, LOD, image complexity - whatever is your preference. The 580 is more capable than the 480 or the 560Ti, and so there's an additional gain from the new GPU itself.

Lastly - let's take that old Bloomfield 92 at 4.4 gig and drop in an i7 4770K at 4.6-gig.... it is very likely that it will have greater performance than the (now old) GTX580 - and so we're going to have to slow down the graphics pipeline (or risk spiking and artifacting) by UsePools=1 again, and with another series of test flights to set another RejectTreshold. (sigh)

In moving from the 950 to the 2600K, I began a new round of overclocking (at that time still using the 580). I slowly moved from UsePools=0 at the beginning with 4.5GHz, to a Poolsize of 10MB, with an RT of 512kB when the proc reached 4.9GHz. As you can see - as the processor became more powerful - the graphics pipeline has to be restricted - "slowed down" because it was pressuring the 580 to a point where i could make it spike by only a small increase in road traffic! That 580 GPU was now the bottleneck, and sooner or later it needed replacing with the 780. That happened several months ago, and so we are back to UsePools=0. This will remain until a proc comes along which will do 6GHz!!!!

Hope this adds more clarity, Adam - and if so I'll try and fit it into the guide. :encouragement:

It's very possible, too, that either of those, with wrong spelling, wrong parameter or syntax - could cause some level of stuttering..

Yep (thanks!) - you sort of "filled in the blanks". I'd definitely say a [shortened?] form of what you've posted would be useful info to have in the guide. Particularly the bit about actually *creating* bottlenecks. This often flummoxes people that have just upgraded components to find FSX performing *worse*!

I'd say bufferpools is one of *the* crucial tweaks to get right. Get that wrong and you'll be forever looking in the wrong place <?>.

Seriously, sleight notes that the sim performs well in DX9 but not DX10. Ok then, I see 3 major differences between his DX 9 and DX10 cfgs:

The misspelling of JOBSHEDULER in the DX10 cfg makes any affinity mask functionality questionable. Next, there is the BufferPools error, meaning that critical setting in DX10 ( I agree with Adam's point above about its importance) is not allowing the GPU to do more, and finally there is this tweak:

TextureMaxLoad=6

It is in the DX10 file but not the DX9. Now we all know that YMMV, but this particular tweak does nothing but create blurries on my system.

So if sleight could fix the JOBSHEDULER and BufferPools errors, and then remark out (//) the "TextureMaxLoad=6" line from the DX10 cfg, reboot the computer, then go do some test flying... well, I'd really like to know how all that works out.

TML is one of the parameters not included by MS in any user-access cfg file, but it is used by FS9, defaulting to 3, and in FSX - SP2, defaulting to 6. It was first brought to light by "Bojote" Altuve, who recommended sizes up to 30, and multiples of 3.
It can be inserted into the fsx.cfg, but unless testing is rigorous and accurate, the results may not be as expected. I recommend it be left out. It is not a standard parameter in the DX10 fsx.cfg.

An extract from his text is below:-


[DISPLAY]
TextureMaxLoad=9 // Carefull. CAN induce stutters on LOW END systems! use multiples of 3 *ONLY* (3, 6, 9 etc) perfect for PhotoRealistic scenery and PNW

The formula on how to determine your 'optimal' TextureMaxLoad goes like this:-

If UPPER_FRAMERATE_LIMIT exists, then:
MAX_TEXTURE_DATA = (TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD * (TextureMaxLoad * TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULTIPLIER)) / UPPER_FRAMERATE_LIMIT

If UPPER_FRAMERATE_LIMIT doesn't exist (UNLIMITED FRAMES) then:
MAX_TEXTURE_DATA = TextureMaxLoad * TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD

As you can see above, TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULTIPLIER its just that, a multiplier. Evidently, changing it DOES change things, however,
when running UNLIMITED frames, it is USELESS, so you are better of playing with TextureMaxLoad directly. be VERY CAREFULL, the 'resulting'
value of this formula (MAX_TEXTURE_DATA) corresponds to the MAXIMUM number of bytes the TEXTURE MANAGER is allowed to 'upload' per
frame. If the resulting value (in bytes) for MAX_TEXTURE_DATA is TOO HIGH you will spike your GPU! (and cause a stutter), so this is a
'test and see' value. Ideally, you'll see an impact on COMPLEX high resolution textures sceneries like PNW and/or PhotoReal scenery.
It is important to mention that THIS value does NOT have an impact on CPU if you are running a Multiple core setup, due to the texture
manager threads running in the cores responsible for texture loading and object batching.

Wow, thanks guys, I kind of expected this thread to die after my last post, I copied and pasted most of the cfg tweeks and didn't even realise they were mis spelled.

Wow, wow, wow. The difference is unbelievable it is now totally smooth, I had put a lot of the settings back to where they were as the sim worked better, so all I changed was the JOBSCHEDULAR correction and the bufferpools correction, the sim is really good now, just going to try turning down the sliders to Paul J recommendations and the 120 to 400 setting Texture bandwidth setting to see if I can tune out the very minor blurring that occasionally shows. Thank you so much guys.

On a more serious note, though ... the beauty of the guide is that it's a step-by-step guide in plain English with a lot of the geek black magic either explained or removed. Once we get into really detailed explanations (which I think are sometimes inevitable) then I can see peoples' eyes glazing over.

Me? I'd love to have one single resource that tailors what I need to do *for a DX10 + Fixer setup only* - with all the Kostas/Bojote inconsistencies etc. already worked out for me (by someone else LOL).

See what I mean? I *almost* made a short reply there! I could have just put a smiley! :lol:

Hahaha! Indeed: "Ain't gonna happen!" I like, and will promote Nick's Hardware Guide, but with all due respect to him - his DX9-oriented FSX setup guide ("Bible") (http://www.simforums.com/forums/the-fsx-computer-system-the-bible-by-nickn_topic46211.html) is so inflated by aggressive and harshly critical opinion that it becomes a mood-changing experience: no-one likes to be dominated by the author when looking for help; and he does this continually. Too, his use of mixed case, centered text, varying line spacing, font changes, etc., - all make for a difficult read when "sussing out" information - and neither you nor I, Adam, can be accused of being "long-winded" after a read of Nick's guide!

When "Bojote" Altuve burst on the FSX scene, his experiments caused a deep stirring of the tweaking tools that could be applied to the PC and FSX, but once the on-line "Tweaking Tool (http://www.venetubo.com/fsx.html)" was released and his Avsim thread deemed complete - he has maintained a very low profile, and there has been little modification to any published docs that I have found on the various sim sites, and so much of his work has been absorbed and advanced by the community at large, and so the original "discoveries" are just a bit dated, or no longer applicable at all, and/or with documentation which corrects some of his early work. As with many of Phil Taylor's posts, the hard and software in use at the time bears little semblance to the modern state-of-the-art FSX DX10 PC.

Kosta's Tweaking Guide (http://kostasfsworld.wordpress.com/fsx-software-and-hardware-guide/), on the other hand, is very well written, is very current, and contains a wealth of good practical information - information based upon empirical testing, not just guesswork. Though for FSX - DX9 only - this is about the easiest read of all of the guides.

...and then there's the DX10 How-To guide...

I agree, Kostas guide for FSX Dx9 is very good, I use Nick N guide for installing windows and FSX and Kostas guide for tweeking FSX.

Hi Paul, tried tbm 400 last night, textures ok at launch but after flying along for about 10 mins started to get more noticable blurring which got better as I reduced altitude.
I will continue trying different settings, still lovely and smooth though, seems to sit at 30 fps for longer periods before the 29.9 drop like in DX9 as in it stays at 30 longer than DX9.
I also have spoken to Steve, I have suppression flight 3D contrails that when the contrails activate it turns the sim into a stutter show.
He asked me to turn off then back on the effects switch, need to try that tonight.

Ok, switched of DX10 effects then back on, still have the same issue, might have to un install the 3D contrail software and try the default.

Sorted the contrails, just re installed them, the DX10 fixer picked the change in the effects folder, clicked ok to convert them and he presto all is good, back to tuning out the blurries.
