Three Ai Formation packages have been uploaded to the library. Not quite sure when they'll actually appear there, but should be soon. Aside from the two C-47 packages mentioned in the other thread here (http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/showthread.php?86305-Flight-Replicas-Project-Status), there is a new one, this being some 162 B-17G's arranged in three Combat Groups. There are instructions on several ways to use the formations (including the TAKPAK idea by HansRoaming).
Hope you enjoy the packages. :)
Edit: Don't know if they'll show on your computers yet, but they do on mine: http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/local_links.php?catid=34

The 162 B-17G formation, plus a photo of a real such formation. Quite something to fly through a formation this size!

(Sorry, don't remember where on the web I sourced this image from. If I find out where, I'll post it here.)

Definitely interesting!
Now I have to figure out how to create and implement an AI Flight plan in FS. I found AI Flight Planner v2.2.12, gut have no clue how to use it, yet.
Another learning curve I can't resist sticking my nose, uuhh... no, I mean my fingers in, :dizzy:

Thanks Mike.
For those that would like to use these formations with AI Carriers, I have found a way to do it.:jump:
You will need to do some editing, but nothing real hard I promise. First thing to do is to copy a
sim.cfg file from any of the boats in the SimObjects/Boats folder, and paste it into any one of
formations folder. For this I used the 3 combat group formation. These are the edits you need to
change in the sim cfg:
[fltsim.0]
title=B-17 ai 3 Combat Groups <<<<Rename
model=
texture=
[General]
category=Boat
[contact_points]
static_pitch=0.0 //degrees, pitch when at rest on the ground (+=Up, -=Dn)
static_cg_height=15000.1 //feet, altitude of CG when at rest on the ground <<<<<Put at ALT you want
[DesignSpecs]
max_speed_mph = 150 <<<<<You can use the cruise speed (this was just for testing)
acceleration_constants = 0.5, 0.2 //Time constant (effects responsiveness), and max acceleration (Gs)
deceleration_constants = 2.0, 0.5 //Time constant (effects responsiveness), and max acceleration (Gs)
SternPosition =-76
[Effects]
wake = <<<<<Delete the effect name
You can delete the aircraft cfg, air and panel folder or place them in another folder. (up to you)
Now place the new b-17 folder into your SimObjects/Boat folder. Now you need to make an entry
in the AI Carriers cfg file:
[formation.XX] <<<<<Replace XX with next number in sequence
title=B-17 Combat box
unit.0=B-17 ai 3 Combat Groups,0,0
Now go and start up FSX, get in your favorite fighter and have some fun.:wiggle:

Thanks very much, Mike!
And you too, Joe. Great idea to use it in AICarriers.

Excellent idea! I guess you could even modify the formations and swap ships with ground vehicles and troops and fly your own missions with TacPack enabled aircraft. People and vehicles might only work if the ground is flat.
If you used zero in the static_cg_height line would that keep AI people or other objects from going underground?
static_cg_height=15000.1 //feet, altitude of CG when at rest on the ground

Yes, keeping it at 0 would be level with the ground or water. I don't think it would work on hills or mountains though,
but I have never tried it. I was surprised that this worked, but also glad that it did. As I s__k at flightplans.:mixed-smiley-010:

Thanks for these formations Mike. The B17 & C47 with glider work fine, but there's no air file included with the C47 formation pack.

Oops. Well, that was dumb. :uncomfortableness: One day I'll learn not to put things together late at night. You should be able to use the .air file from the C-47/Waco package for now (just rename it), and I'll upload a new version of the C-47 formation.
Sorry about that!
