Folks,

I took a stab at creating a new fire retardant effect that combines the heavy, clumpy retardant effect from Milton's S-2T tankers with the older misty looking retardant effect that came with the radial S-2 trackers. Here is the result:

I'm going to post it here as sort of a beta. I'd like to get people's feedback on it. I'm pretty happy with the way it looks as it leaves the plane. But the further away from the plane it gets, things sort of spread out and "fall apart," which may or may not be noticed depending on what altitude you drop from. I have some ideas for how to tweak it further, but I wanted to get it out for people to try.

Just add "fx_GD_fire_retardant" in place of whatever effect you are currently using in your aircraft.cfg file.

In fact, if someone can tell me what altitudes S-2's and P-3 typically drop from (AGL), that will help me gear the effect for the correct altitude.

Hmmm... I'm not sure what's going on there. When I click on the attachment, it downloads as a .zip file, which, when opened has the .fx file inside.

Can anyone else help with that one?

is there any fire effects that are more than just a round patch?.....whats needed to be realistic is line of fire that would appear to extend a half mile or so,and the "V" pattern more real fires make would be cool in canyons ,and even in flatland areas.thats how a fire is fought from the air..you work the flanks and then cut off the head.

this is from the year 2000,but it fits the P3 T20 fine.

Nice work Malibu! I look forward to checking it out.

Drop altitude is generally 1.5 wingspans AGL. Varies due to terrain and obstacles of course.

Here is a shot of what I get when I click on the zip file. If I open it with notepad it gives me garbage. It won't open at all with Open Office 4.0. All the other zip files I have laying around work. I am using WinZip 14.5.

PutPut, try using WINRAR or 7zip to open that file. WINRAR is free for about a month and then it asks you to buy it and 7zip is free. the beauty of 7zip is that it can open lots of different types of files not just zip and rar files. Here's the 7zip link...

and here's the one for WINRAR....

Thanks for the compliments guys. And thanks for the info on drop height, Daveroo and Nate.

I think I'm very close with this version (attached below). Maybe even all the way there... at least in terms of what can be done in FSX with the amount of time I have to spend on it...
