If I had to guess, I would say shells from rail guns, most likely those the Germans used in World War I or II.

Love slide 18 - the Daimler Bone Crusher! That model is generally considered to the first motorcycle with an internal combustion engine. (I did research on early motorcycles for a midterm a couple of semesters back...)
