POLYS!

My mate who is building a bubbletop Merlin Spitfire wants to know roughly how many polys go into an acceptable LOD 100 model, and whether he should use smoothing or not. Anybody?

Use lots... I have 14,000+ for LOD100 but remember that includes lots of fiddly u/c details, flap ribbing etc. Smoothing? Of course it should be used - funnily enough the sim has to work harder if you don't use smoothing. Just avoid the Auto-Smooth tool, it's a waste of space: do the job by hand.

Cheers, Tom - I'll pass it on.

I suppose that it's all relative to computing power.

Back in 2003, a 10,000 poly LOD100 would drag the game to its knees. And this assumes that the sliders are all set to 5. Also, to keep the model efficient, one could build a richly detailed LOD100 with 20,000 polys or more but then have LOD95 and LOD90 with some of the more complex bits either simplified or cut out. Multi-engine models are always going to require more polys, of course. My $0.02.
