Check Newegg. They have a 1 gig EVGA GeForce 9800 PCIe for $69.
It's on sale.

question my board is a pci-e 1.o
will a 2.0 run on it?

All I've got is my 'emergency' ATI x-300 256Mb. Price would be right but it's a pretty big step back.

"PCIe 2.0 dictates twice the throughput of 1.1. 2.0 is forwards and backwards compatible: meaning you can run 1.0/1.1 devices in a 2.0 slot, and also run 2.0 compliant devices in a 1.0/1.1 slot."

Haven't found a reference yet for BIOS/driver issues

I run vista and the 7800 would only work with ms drivers, i never could get nvidia drivers to work from day 1

for about 3 weeks I have been working the butt off on this computer and daily the blue screen of death and this awful smell.

well today I had the blue screen 3 times, heck i have had the side cover off for 2 weeks and this card is cooking.
I hope I get this new card by early next week, 3 days the website says.

It should work ok, but you will not get the full potential out of a PCIe 2.0 card when it's plugged into a 1.0 slot. As previously posted, the 1.0 slot does not have the data transfer capability of the 2.0 slot.

at this time, I am venturing into a very large project and do not have the time to deal with vista and a motherboard swap and Microsoft. I do not want to lose my data.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I kind of doubt you will be happy with a 9400GT. The 9400 is really intended for web surfing and watching DVD movies, not for any graphics intensive games or sims.

Hi Ickie,
Just put the 7800 in my wifes machine. And the 6800 has gone to a friend who has just fritzed his 6200 card yesterday.
The pci cards I have just checked. They are both appear to be dead.Been in the spares box for about 7 years.
That leaves a 5900.Will check the cost of postage from this side of the pond.If it is not too much will send it to you.It maybe the cost of postage is more than the card costs now.
Will let you know.
