The 1951 version is the original, and a classic. But for total shock value, nothing beats John Carpenter's version with Kurt Russell. That one gave me nightmares for a week it was so gruesome!

:icon_eek:

Trivia: James Arness was actually Peter Graves' (Mission:Impossible) brother. After Gunsmoke ended, Arness portrayed mountain man Zebulon Macahan in the series How the West Was Won.

After about 35 years they released The McCahans in the US 3 weeks ago. The first release has the movie and the first season. Good kick ass western, old Zeb don't take no guff from anyone.

James Arness also played the FBI agent in the 1954 Sci Fi thriller "Them."

What fun those Sci Fi movies were when growing up.

"Arness wanted to be a naval fighter pilot, but he felt his poor eyesight would bar him. His height of 6 feet 7 inches ended his hopes, since 6 feet 2 inches was the limit for aviators. Instead, he was called for the Army and reported to Fort Snelling, Minnesota (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Snelling,_Minnesota) in March 1943.[6] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_arness#cite_note-bio-6) Arness served as a rifleman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rifleman) with the U.S. 3rd Infantry Division (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3rd_Infantry_Division_%28United_States%29), and was severely wounded during Operation Shingle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Shingle), at Anzio (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anzio), Italy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italy).

According to James Arness – An Autobiography, he landed on Anzio Beachhead (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anzio_Beachhead) on January 22, 1944 as a rifleman with 2nd Platoon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platoon#United_States_organization), E Company (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Company_%28military_unit%29), 2nd Battalion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battalion#United_States_Army_and_Marine_Corps), 7th Infantry Regiment (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/7th_Infantry_Regiment_%28United_States%29) of the 3rd Infantry Division (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3rd_Infantry_Division_%28United_States%29). Because of his height, he was the first ordered off his landing craft (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Landing_craft) to determine the depth of the water; it came up to his waist.

On January 29, 1945, having undergone surgery several times, Arness was honorably discharged. His wounds continued to bother him, and in later years Arness suffered from chronic leg pain, which sometimes hurt when mounting a horse. His decorations include the Bronze Star Medal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bronze_Star_Medal), the Purple Heart (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purple_Heart),[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_arness#cite_note-star-2) the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European-African-Middle_Eastern_Campaign_Medal) with three bronze battle stars, the World War II Victory Medal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_II_Victory_Medal) and the Combat Infantryman Badge (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Combat_Infantryman_Badge).[9]" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_arness#cite_note-9)

This puts Arness on the Anzio beachhead at the same time with another fine man, Audie L. Murphy, who was in the 15th Infantry Regt, 3rd Division ("Rock of the Marne").
