Thanks for the HU! Yet another terrific aircraft to add to the collection.
Downloaded and a short flight to test and found a wonderful model to the
same high standard as Manfred's C47.

Thanks to all involved.:salute::salute::salute:

Working on revised start-up prop spin suggested by Manfred, you will see the difference in this video. Still on going testing.

Just taking this baby ORBX PNW from PAKT to CYPR and enjoying every minute. I prefer pistons over turboprops, so this is even better than Basler BT-67. IMO this is the best "DC-3" for FSX so far.:jump:

I blew #1 taking off from Skiathos and #2 somehow while Turning onto finals for emergency.... hell knows how :icon_lol: better send out the salvage and dive teams to go fetch her.... while they work, i'll study the aircraft more (was a textbook ditching though and not too far from the shore!) first time in a long time i've had a laugh at my own stupidity in the Sim :icon_lol:

Excellent model! Just got done with her and no issues getting the engines started and managing them in flight. The only suggestion I have for the Dev team is a backdated VC, at least in terms of the panel/gauges. Otherwise, this is a classic.

Knowing that a Marine(Semper Fi!) version is likely to be in your mix, I'd really like to see the '70s MCAS Beaufort bird(#064/9064/39064). I spent quite a few hours in the back of that one.

Hi Don , I certainly would enjoy a "70s MCAS Beaufort bird" . I spent my last two years(68-69) in the Marine Corps at MCAS Beaufort as a 6511-Aviation Ordinance although they sent me to school in Norfolk to work on SATS loaders(forklift looking piece of equipment with a long boom on it and low to the ground to get under the wings of the AC). I was in HMS-32 .

Sorry for the rambling , didn't mean to hijack your thread .

I would recommend Steve Ginter's Naval Fighters series book on the C-117D. It's the newest one in the series. It covers all the airframes and has multiple pictures of most of them. There were only 104 airframes, but they were assigned and rotated all over the Navy and Marine Corps.

Wikipedia says that Capital Airlines used to operate some back in the 50s.

The C-117 was a commercial dud though (at least in the continental US), as its operating costs were higher than that of a regular DC-3/C-47 and it was inferior to the then brand new Convairs.

I'm probably missing something here .... but I'm wondering why the VC appears to be the one off the BT-67 and/or a modified turboprop unit?

Wouldn't the one Jahn did for his other C-47 models be closer to what this radial-engine model should have?

Sorry if a dumb question - away on business travel so haven't installed - maybe this is explained somewhere ....

thanks - looks great, for sure!!!

Taken from the description @ Flightsim.com..... "The package includes a VC adapted from the Basler BT-67."

July 25th, 2013, 09:22
The decision was made to utilize a derivative of the Basler VC. I have been promised that a V2 with a cockpit closer to an authentic C-117 will be released at some point in the future.

Yup. "Version 1 Beta"... :kilroy: ;)

I like this more modern VC anyway, since I'm using the "Super DC-3" to haul stuff to back country strips in my virtual world.
I think I'll hang onto it, even after they upgrade. Or I guess it would be downgrade. :icon_lol:

It is great to get authentic cockpit later on, but I also like that we have this "modern version" with all the bells and whistles as an option. It suits fine for IFR flying and represents nicely some fictional C-117 with modernized cockpit and avionics.

Thanks. I knew the "what" - I didn't understand the "why". Beta - now I understand - makes sense. I suppose for accuracy/those-of-us-who-prefer-steam, one could retrofit the stock C-47 VC?

Cheers,

Wonderful model. Many thanks! My log book confirms about 60 hours in R4D-8's.
While awaiting the prototypically correct VC, I changed the VC to use the default DC-3's. However, now the props don't turn! Do I need to add something to the replacement (default DC-3) panel.cfg?
Anyone understand what the issue is?

I tried the same with the same results. My guess is that there is some hard coding somewhere in the model that prevents the VC switch?

Update on the WIP photoreal models. First one blank aluminum polished. The second, two tone base paint. I'm working on adding the details to make them more "grumpy", oil, rust etc. Working around the cowl flaps now adding bluing, oil and general wear. This is an awesome platform and will get all the TLC a model of this caliber deserves.
I'll have it ready in a day or two.

I may rework the bumps...don't know yet. The photos I see show a lot of metal stress, it always looks great to emphasize those areas.

Man, I wish it was. In those shots it almost could pass for the P-61.
It's Uncle Milton's FSX A-26 Invader. I did a bunch of skins and an upgraded paint kit for it a while back. All those skins should still be on the site here. Same for the D-18.
Amazing...these are all freeware aircraft and easily as good or better than many pay ware.

Glad you like the work...thank you.
I got a feeling this bird is going to get the same treatment I gave the Invader. I'll finish the basic, then follow up with a high detail version. I'm leaning more and more towards enhancing the bumps.

Unfinished work...yep, I have a keen eye towards Milton's F7F. I'd love to take that one FSX native and really do the model justice. The lineup of the A-26, F7F and the P-61 would be pretty inspiring.

These are great paints, but I could not help but notice that the tire textures were missing unless all black was the intent.

These two are almost ready. Just some final detailing here and there then ya'll can go flyin'.

The natural skin version uses a bit higher reflection global map than the two tone. The tires do have texture, they just don't show due to the general shading in the photos. No worries... Jankees and mine both have appropriate tires.

I originally had a spec alpha in it but thought it might be a bit too shiny for a "grumpy" old airplane. I have been experimenting with different combinations of spec color and alpha for the aluminum skin.
I'll put it back in and post a couple shots...see what you think.

Flew from Chulai to Danang in C-117 called the Hummer belonging to H&MS-13 while rotating back to the states. Later to find out (2 years ago) it crashed into a mountain sometime in 1969, Killing everyone on board. Back in the early 80's happened to drive by sequia air field near porterville and they had about 10 of them there. I guess phasing them out. Didn't see the Hummer, and I wondered why. My first reply to a thread. Nice to belong to SOH. Great Airplane!

Not at all. There with the US State Dept and Diplomatic Security Service and USMC. All protect US assets oversea's like embassies. There is one known in Spain and another somewhere in Italy. this C117 has a very valuable asset that not even a Herc can't match in quick Tactical SAR.

One final paint before I go on holiday: C-117D N306SF (cn 43393) Skyfreighters, 1985-1995. The aircraft was delivered to the USAAF as C-47A-30-DL, 42-23758 with C/N 9620. To the USN as R4D-5 BuNo 12437 then rebuilt to R4D-8. Became C-117D when designations standardized in 1962. Other civil registrations include N8538R and N44GH. It served with Blue Angels 1953-55.

I've finished all four versions. Weathered aluminum and polished with light wear, also weathered two tone and restoration with light wear. All four are highly detailed blanks for re-painters to use as foundations for their custom paints. Of course...they look pretty good as they are...just add tail numbers.
All four versions are depicted as working aircraft with appropriate exhaust and oil stains. I'm not a big fan of trailer queens.

I'll have these loaded up onto the site here tomorrow...this is a very fine model to work with and fly. If this is a beta, I'll can't wait to see the final.

These skins are awesome GMAN.......I have one question. On the later aircraft the lower fuselage was light gray instead of the bare metal....is there any ay we could get a version with light gray lower sides, engine cowlings, and wings. It does appear that there are bare metal areas that would be covering service areas of the engine.

Love this bird. Flew her into Oshkosh two nights before EAA started. Flys like a dream, doesn't she?

The only thing I noticed was that my ADF gauge is goofy. The face is not centered in the instrument case which causes the needles to appear off center. I haven't tried to fix this with my FS panel studio ... just wondered if anyone else noticed this.

Thanks for the two-tone 'base paints' Gman! C-FALL is a 'simple' work in progress using your 'polished' one and 'weathered' specs. Your basic clean grey and white looks good!

Lookin' forward to your C-FALL, Ranger! Very nice, indeed.

I've loaded the two white on gray files onto the site. These are the same as the previous files, but done in a low gloss military finish. There are two versions, one clean with minimal wear and the other with stains, rust and weathering. No paint chips, I'll leave that to the re-painters.

I've reworked the bellyband stripe as per the photos posted by Skyhawka4m. These should make a good platform for all military paints.

Enjoy...G

It was only a matter of time till that one popped up. :icon_lol:

A (fictional) Provincetown-Boston paint might go well with that one and especially the VC, considering that they flew them well into the 1980s. Just thinking out loud though.

And everyone your paints are awesome... I think I downloaded all of them. I really like the dingy and dirty blue air force paint, and the clean half alum / half white by gman... awesome! I will be also downloading your metal paints.

I'll probably do the RXP gns mods too.

So far I also noticed the RMI bug (being off center) and also their stock Garmin appears to not have standby entries in the VC. At the moment it tunes the active frequency - it should tune the frequency highlighted in teal, then the user swaps that to active.

WIP of the Navy Chuting Stars Super 3. If anyone has additional shots...i.e. wing shots, I'd appreciate those. I've only got Wings Palette and a small side photo to work from. I have no wing details.
This would have been a very well maintained airplane, so I've made it super clean...very little wear and oil. I'm assuming she was detailed before every performance.

Gman, you may have already seen these pics of the Chuting Stars plane. Blue paint changes shade depending on the sky in the pics. Yellow looks to be a little different from what you have, maybe a RGB number around 250/192/68 or so. "US NAVY" on wings tapers to smaller letters toward the wing tips. I don't even know how to do that in Paint Shop Pro. :icon_lol:

Not sure in Paint Shop Pro. I don't have that one.

In Photoshop or Image Ready select the area with a mask, hit the V key and use the nodes to transform. If you select the node while holding the control key you can do the perspective shift.

Hi,

So far I also noticed the RMI bug (being off center) and also their stock Garmin appears to not have standby entries in the VC. At the moment it tunes the active frequency - it should tune the frequency highlighted in teal, then the user swaps that to active.

that should be easy to fix: The radios must be defined in the AIRCRAFT.CFG as having standby, so if you change that section in the AIRCRAFT.CFG as follows, it should work:

[Radios]
// Radio Type = available, standby frequency, has glide slope
Audio.1 = 1
Com.1 = 1, 1
Com.2 = 1, 1
Nav.1 = 1, 1, 1
Nav.2 = 1, 1, 0
Adf.1 = 1
Adf.2 = 1
Transponder.1 = 0
Marker.1 = 1

I'll look into the RMI bug as well...

Cheers,

Hansi

and can be downloaded here (http://aussiex.org/forum/index.php?/files/file/3950-manfred-jahns-douglas-c-117d-fuerza-aerea-colombiana-1632/).
Interesting history, this one: Originally C-47 c/n 10020, it was rebuilt as c/n 43360 R4D-8 with the US Navy as BuNo 39070, and later flew in civilian life as N4458H and N34AH. It was sold to Colombia in 1988 and flew with the FAC at least until 1997. It was later impounded by the DEA for drug running apparently (any one know more about this??) and sold to Classic Air of Las Vegas. It is currently in Arizona I believe, as N34AH, but I am not sure of its current status. Anybody know this?

I know...I'm pretty much bullet proof. I got bigger issues in the world to take on, don't let much ruffle me here. There will be more skins along this vein coming. The C-117 is very limited for available skins without doing fictional, but the C-47 would be a different story.

OK Gman, Jankees, et. al., one of you repaint these?

I was wondering when someone would ask that question...:banghead:.

Back when I was painting real drag boats and hot rods I did a few big offshore racers in similar graphics. I would spend a few hundred hours on the work, then the guy with the checkbook would go out and wad the thing up first time in the water. I loved those guys...deep pockets and no common sense. lol

Ok, I checked why the RMI is not displaying correctly: The compass rose
bitmap has been enlarged but that messed up the whole gauge. There is
another problem with the background bitmap of that gauge.

So, would say, the fastest way to fix the RMI ist to use that gauge from
Manfred's Basler BT-67. To do this you must locate the file BT67_HD.CAB
in the Basler PANEL folder. Create a copy of that CAB and place it in the
C-117D PANEL folder. Then, as a last step, edit the PANEL.CFG file and
change the following line in the [Vcockpit02]-section:

Change the line

gauge03=R4D8_HD!rmi, 12,341,98,98

into

gauge03=BT67_HD!rmi, 12,341,98,98

That should do it.

Btw, excellent repaints, guys! Great job! :applause::applause::applause:

Hm, I assumed, I have the most recent version of that gauges installed. The
CAB on my Basler installation is named "BT67_HD". In the BT67_HD.CAB
is a file called "release3". If you can find that file in your CAB as well, I would
assume they are identically and for what I can say, it should be the most
recent version, too.

To find out, if the RMI in your CAB is working, just install it according to
my description. If it displays ok, and if you can use the two knobs to
switch the two needles between ADF1/2 and NAV1/2, it should be fine.

Every now and then, amoung all the freeware releases, along comes something truly special. IMO this C-117D is well and truly in that class. I just can't stop flying this incredible aircraft.

Just want to express my gratitude to all concerned in the developement of this addon, and also to the repainters for making it even better!

I might wait J...I don't know what all Manfred has planned for the re-release, but I know for sure the paint kit will be extensive. Everything is layered so lots of flexibility. The wing rivets and new bump maps will be there too. You will have a lot more to work with.

I think the wing rivets are developed enough for me to transfer them to the C-117. I'll re-work the PSD, make a new bump set and upload the mods.
The wing rivets look much, much better on the C-47. This mod will really improve the C-117...as if it's not great already.

I gotta admit...I like this airplane. For a freeware it really, really doesn't suck. lol
