History of Gorrie airfield.
Gorrie airfield was named after RAAF flying officer Peter Gorrie, who was killed
in a raid on Menado.
Proposed in 1942, initial construction. at Gorrie was undertaken by N0.1 Mobile works
squadron(MWS) from 15 November of that year.With funds utilized from the U.S. Facilities
were constructed by No 1. MWS, the Allied Works Council and Country Roads Board of
Victoria, which sealed the runway.

On January 14 1943 personal of No. 1 MWS, commenced the building of Sidney willias huts
and facilities in preperation of the arrival of men and equipment of No 14. Aircraft Repair Depot(ARD).
which arrived 1 month later, by May 27, 19 officers and 940 airmen under wing commander
F.W.Sexton were established at the airfield.

The facility expanded rapidly and No 8 Airfield Construction Squadron commenced the building of more buildings
on May 10, a total of 90 Sidney Williams huts, 4 Bellman hangers and 6 Singapore hangers were
completed. By June 1943 Gorrie boasted 33 officers and 1054 airmen
and at onw stage the airfield had 6500 personnel including 440 civilians.
No 14. ARD provided major servicing and engineering facilities for all
types of aircraft, ground equipment and vehicles of the RAAF. The
unit was ably supported by personnel of No 55 Operations Base Unit(OBU)
which performed the administrative and support functions for the complex.
Productivity at No 14. ARD was high over 150 aircraft of the RAAF and U.S were
serviced, while the output in vehicles, ground equipment and engineering tasks was equally impressive.
