well.... now i have a PC that's FSX capable i've been spending more and more time in it and enjoying the sim... to Celebrate i just finished my Paintkit for the FCS Lancaster, seen here in a Polished metal, took her pretty much back to blank, and redrew it all, including the bump maps, kinda pleased with the result...

Cheers guys, i'll try and get a few paints done by tonight, currently taking that High-Shine version, toning it down a bit and adding in some tonal differences, get some Bare Metal going on (and not as polished) then i can start on the B.Is...

Congrats on getting a rig that can run FSX properly. My guess is that you'll be getting a lot of enjoyment out of a different texture environment.

the PC i have now is making thigs so much easier, glad i finally have the ability to run FSX... specs on my rig are ASUS Z77 Sabertooth with Thermal Armour, Corsair H80 Cooling, 32Gb RAM, Soudblaster Recon 3D, 2x GeForce GTX 660 2Gb in SLi, I7 3770k and the HX1050 PSU... quite a rig, runs the sim nicely :jump:

Your new texture work for this model looks superb, Matt (talk about a huge canvas to cover)! That white and black scheme comes from the 'Tiger Force' squadrons, as I recall.

thanks pal! yup that's right, had the war dragged on just a few weeks longer Lancasters in this white and black scheme would have flown to the Pacific and taken part, as they were they 'lived' in Italy during 1946 (they kept the scheme even after the 'Tiger Force' had been disbanded), most were later variant Lancasters but i thought it'd be nice to see it on the 'Classic', the B.I, though if i recall it should work on other B. variant Lancasters in the FCS Pack, though that reminds me, need to sling some paint onto the H2S Blister as well as the underside roundels :icon_lol:

Didn't they fly a couple of those over to the US?

Matt Wynn
June 30th, 2013, 14:29
not sure where they ended up... seems the 'Tiger Force' was little known about and finding where particular Lancs went is a bit of a puzzle... still... think i'll finish this and then sling some camo onto the ole' girl...

Shame about the way-too-small nose turret in the FCS Lancaster, amongst other things. Plane Design's FS9 Lancaster is a far more accurate exterior model, and functions very well in FSX.

Matt Wynn
July 1st, 2013, 04:57
that it might be but it's about the best FSX Native model there is for the Lancaster (having self-shadowing, 'Bump' Map, Specular map etc...), i still use the PD one in FS9 though... anyways, here's an update... still a fair whack to do including removing the Alpha Channels, Adjusting spec map etc... but the B-Type Camouflage is shaping up...

ok... first camo bird is done, might feather the camouflage edges slightly but not quite decided yet... anyways here we have W4118 ZN-Y, called 'Admiral Prune' of 106Sqn based at RAF Syerston, this particular Lancaster was flown by Guy Gibson in '42/ early '43

Didn't they fly a couple of those over to the US?

I don't know which squadron it was or the particulars behind the tour, but yes, there were three or four RAF Lancs dispatched from the UK for a postwar tour of the US and Canada wearing black and white schemes. There was a kid I chummed around with in high school who was the son of one of the maintenance crew members who went on the tour and decided to settle in Canada when he left the service. I remember seeing his scrapbook with newspaper articles and photos about the tour as well as a squadron patch that he'd kept.

Found the article in the July 2006 issue (No memory problems yet it seems!) . The No. 35 Squadron flew to the USA from July 8th till August 29th 1946, with 16 Lancasters still painted in the 'Tiger force' colours. (And one York for technical support.)
The official name was 'Operation Lancaster' but is was also known as 'Operation Goodwill'. They flew from Britain to the Azores on towards Gander and then started a tour that led them from New York to Buffalo, Detroit, Chicago, St Louis, Kansas City, Denver, Long Beach, San Antonio, Washington and back to New York.

Matt, I wish these Lancasters were actually in Skiathos!:icon_lol:

What a summer vacation that would be, especially if we flew there and taxied past them!

I can see though why you use this scenery as backdrop for your shots, it's gorgeous, and showcases your top notch work nicely. I don't have the Lanc but seeing your work I might consider it.

problem is at Skiathos they'd completely jam up that Apron, only room for at best 2 A321 sized aircraft there so 7 Lancasters... :icon_lol: might move my Lancaster paint facility... either to Heraklion, Thessaloniki, Athens, or even Soesterberg, Volkel or Leeuwarden in the Netherlands (Regularly spend my Saturdays with a NL. Road Atlas open on my lap doing some Virtual VFR Flying there) :icon_lol:

and Dougal, no problem! just doing a T-6 (well SNJ-7C) to represent David Gilmour's (of Pink Floyd fame) aircraft.... after that it's back to Lancasters

Chaps, I've been thinking about buying the FCS Lancaster for ages and finally bought it for £6 at the FlightSim Pilot Shop. The main reason I finally picked it up was the fantastic repaints at Flightsim.com by Matt Wynn. Unfortunately, Flightsim.com are having download problems because of the popularity of an X-plane scenery item causing download limits to be exceeded at the moment. Have these repaints been uploaded anywhere else? I could not find them at the SOH, but I always have trouble finding stuff here.

Cheers

It's definitely a great aircraft. FYI, to fix the fuel tank issue (you'll find it if you fly for more than 15 minutes), find the number_of_tank_selectors line in the acft.cfg and change it from 2 to 4, then the fuel system will work correctly.

I.E. find

number_of_tank_selectors = 2

and change it to

number_of_tank_selectors = 4
