This weekend the Dutch air force organized the traditional air show weekend (Friday and Saturday) and of course we attended both days again. The special theme this year was '100 years of military aviation' as the Dutch air force was founded back in 1913. Despite budget cuts a nice program was assembled, including four of the best display teams in the world: the Red Arrows, Frecce Tricolori, Patruille Suisse and the Patrouille de France. Other jets included the solo F-16 displays from the RNLAF, Belgian air force and Turkish airforce, Czech and Hungarian Gripen and the French 'Ramex' team with two Mirage 2000N. Because of the 100 years anniversary a lot of classic aircraft attended, including a few from the Battle of Britain memorial flight (BBMF) and Air Atlantique. Took a whole lot of photos; here are a few highlights:

German F-4 Phantom in its 'Pharewell' paint. Amazingly I never saw one flying although the Germans and Turks attended several shows in the past but Always on the static show:

Polish Lim-2 (MiG-15); another one I never saw flying before:

Czech Saab Gripen in Tigermeet paint:

Air Atlantique Gloster Meteor (Another first for me):

B-25 Mitchell:

About sixty years of jets in Dutch service together; Meteor, Fouga (Not in Dutch service, but a lot of pilots learn to fly on these in Belgium), Hunter and F-16:

Saab Viggen, the last flying Viggen in the world. Again, never saw one of these fly before:

Another aircraft you never see flying, but now a pair did a display; Polish Sukhoi Su-22M4 Fitter. Lots of noise and smoke but not very good at making turns:

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a262/Ferror/LMD2013Volkel/Fitter2_zpsca9dc9d7.jpg~original (http://s13.photobucket.com/user/Ferror/media/LMD2013Volkel/Fitter2_zpsca9dc9d7.jpg.html)

Air Atlantique Avro Anson, yet another first for me:

This KLM 737 did a fly-by and landing, it was filled with about 120 severly disabled or sick children, for which an foundation called 'Hoogvliegers' (High flyers) organizes special trips like these:

Ramex Mirage 2000N (N for Nuclear, kind of interesting as just last week a former PM revealed a public secret that Volkel still has US nuclear weapons in storage..):

Absolutely stunning pictures! Well done!
I would love to see a Viggen again, the noisiest single engined aircraft I can remember from my childhood in Farnborough.
Also surprised to see an Anson. I thought there were non remaining airworthy...?!
The F-16s in formation with the 737 is brilliant! I hope that the disadvantaged children had a great ride!
Thank You for sharing!

as Stuart said; Great photos!

Stuart the 'Annie' is the only one Airworthy in Europe if i recall, Belongs to Classic Air Force at Newquay, it's a T.21 registered G-VROE... http://www.classicairforce.com/the-aircraft

i was supposed to be at the Luchtmachtdagen, but a financial issue arose just a month before the show stopping me getting out there, ah well there's always next year... :jump:

Thanks guys!

Matt, is the classic air force a different organisation or is it part of Air Atlantique..? I see they also have the Meteor and Dragon Rapide (Also flew at Volkel) on their site.

Stuart: The Viggen is quite noisy and has an earth shaking rumble on take-off, but those Fitters are even louder! :applause:

Ferry, it's what Air Atlantique became, they moved from Coventry to Newquay and rebranded. i do Profile artistry for them, am on my second piece for them... the Dragon Rapides (The silver one like was at Volkel, and it's sister Ship 'Sybille', named in memory of a former volunteer pilot who flew her) first one i did was their Chipmunk (not on sale yet but 2 hang at Newquay, one in the Boss' Office i think it was, the other in the 'Departure lounge' where Pax wait for their pleasure flights) they're a living Museum so they aim to keep as much flying as they can :salute:

the Air Atlantique DC-3 is a Classic Air Force airframe also, as are 2 others... G-AMPY and G-ANAF being the other two...

Thanks for the pictures Ferry, I enjoyed them!

Funny to hear you never saw (or should I say "hear"") a Phantom in flight. When I was stationed at Soesterberg in 1978, 32TFS was still flying them. I think they were replaced by Eagles in 1980.

Well, I was four years old back in 1980, so...... :icon_lol: I've seen Phantoms on static display almost every year since 2000 (When I started visiting the shows) but they never did a display, and not even during holidays in Germany or Turkey did I see one. Much like the Fitter the Phantom is a great fuel-to-noise converter, but not a great aircraft for a show, as those beasts seem to prefer to fly only in a straight line at high speeds.

sad to hear this i lived under the Approach at Larissa AB in Greece till i was 6 or 7-ish... Phantoms were my daily fix... used to go right over the top of the house, i remember my mum being angry once because she had put an empty glass on the wall just as a Phantom was doing a pass for some event, it hit the burners to climb right over the house and the glass went 'walkies' off the wall... me laughing, my mum shooing me away from the broken glass :icon_lol:

good news is Ferry that Greece have no plans to retire theirs any time soon, they're determined to be the last Phantom Operator, so the old 'brick' (there's a saying 'the RF-4E, flying proof that given enough thrust even a brick can fly') will be about for a few years yet...

Didn't see any while at Rhodes either! But I guess the Greeks don't have any other option but to continue flying their Phantoms at the moment..? With the current crisis I'm sure then won't (And probably can't) spend anything on a replacement anyway.

The good news is that 'we' recently purchased a Phantom for the air force museum in Soesterberg and painted it in the colours of the Wolfhounds back when they were based there. It was supposed to fit in the museum's display of the F-86, F-100, F-102 (A former Greek aircraft) and F-15, but with the move to a new location and merger with the army museum there's a chance we won't see any of those aircraft again.. Last rumor I've heard had the Phantom and F-15 rotating on display and the others sold, stored or scrapped.

the Greek Phantoms are regularly found at Andravida AB, Tanagra AB, Larissa AB... occasionally Aktion and sometimes Souda AB, only time you'd likely see them above Rodos is if they're toying with a Turkish F-16 who's sniffing around the border :icon_lol: i don't think it's economics... well partially it is, but along with the A-7's they're Greeces Primary attack aircraft and until next spending review (next year) no replacements can be looked at... but in saying that Greece have looked at Flanker and Typhoon... to replace the Mirage's as i recall, Phantom once again is too loved and keeps escaping the retirement :icon_lol:

No sorry Alastair, I don't have time for that. Wish I could though, that and the RIAT are still on my list, as is the show in Le Bourget.

Great pictures Ferry. I missed the German Phantom flying, I was still in a traffic jam to the car park :-( That picture of the Danish C-130 with flares is just fantastic.

Last rumor I've heard had the Phantom and F-15 rotating on display and the others sold, stored or scrapped.
Not quite true. First part is correct, first the F-15 will be on display at the museum and will be rotating display with the Phantom over the years. The others, which unfortunately are in a bad condition after spending years outdoors, will make a move to the new museum and will be displayed outside. How long they will last there is unsure, they really need a fix up. Lets hope enough funds will be available for that in the (near) future.

June 17th, 2013, 07:14
That's at least some good news, Vin! I already heard rumors during my last visit that the people of Soesterberg were not happy with the US aircraft not becoming a part of the new museum, as they felt it was a big part of the history of their town. Seems like they listened after all!

The Phantom didn't fly a display, but it did two passes before landing on Friday morning. Quite a nice surprise!

Great photos, Ferry, thank you for posting them! I saw in another forum that this was the Dutch B-25's first air show appearance in 3.5 years, it only recently returning to flight again following about that same length of time - the Dutch Spitfire had also been out of action for some time up until very recently. Very nice to see both of them flying and displayed again!

Thanks John, it is indeed good to see both back in the air! I love seeing those classics up in the air and this year we got to see plenty with the P-51D, two Spitfires, B-25, Anson, Beaver, Cub, Fokker S-11, Meteor, Fouga, MiG-15, Phantom, two Dakotas, Catalina, Dragon Rapide, Beech 18, Harvard, Hunter and Viggen!

In my younger days, Phantoms from RAF Germany flew over our house a lot as they were based at nearby Bruggen. Even saw the occasional Jaguar back then. Those were the days:naturesm:.

Here some pictures of my own. For me it was actually 'work' as I was shooting on behave of the aviation museum I work for. It's a nice way to combine hobby and work :icon_lol:

This shot is from Saturday, the busiest day with 150.000 people visiting. In the middle you can clearly see the static show, on the right side the runway the planes where flying from. That's quite a challenging distance when it comes down to making pictures.

Great shots Vincent, and way cool that you got a ride on one of the Allouettes!
