You see some positively amazing weather phenomena on the Great Plains. One of my abiding memories of my stint at Forbes AFB near Topeka, KS was of spending two or three hours outside our barracks one summer evening observing something I had never seen before, or seen since. The entire sky was covered by grey cloud that resembled cotton batting - from horizon to horizon. On the other side of that cloud layer was an awe-inspiring electrical storm that went on for hours. There were many hundreds of lightning flashes during the time I watched this go down. It looked like a neon light fixture with dirty cotton stuffed into it, it flickered so fast. Yet there was not a sound from this display - not one thunderclap or rumble in the distance, nor was there a raindrop. Like I said, I've never seen anything like that since.
