With all these amazing early Cold War aircraft coming out like WBS Mustang Tales, the Milviz F-86, and the Vertigo F9F, I was hoping someone would do some Korean War scenery. Anyone know of any?

-Thanks in advance

I supect that at this moment in time, it's not that appropriate to suggest this. Read the papers my friend.

I would love to find good landclass data and military airports/airfields for both North and South Korea. The only ones I could find were made for FS9, and the result is not so good in FSX.
A vintage military AI package with early jets up to Mig-21s would be icing on the cake.

Sorry mate, but I suspect that at no moment in time, is condescension and/or misguided political correctness a helpful answer to a reasonable question.

There are many members here on SOH, myself included (and I believe you too, in the RN, if memory serves) who have had the privilege of serving in uniform - some of us, alas, having witnessed first hand the ravages of evil that result from war. Nevertheless, my fellow SOHers and I who serve/ed are able to enjoy the historicity that this hobbby enables - in a manner that doesn't glorify death and destruction. And if a thread happens to strike a particularly distastful chord, there is always the option to ignore it ...

As to MM's query, strictly speaking, I know of little for FSX and the KW period per se. All that comes to mind is the following:

1) Calclassics did a great "Far East Asia" pack for FS9. Admittedly, there are a few bugs (the people objects don't show quite right), but overall, gives a fantastic rendition of certain airports that fall into the area of interest in question. Specifically, Pyongyang is one of the airports modelled, complete with some Soviet era civilian and military vehicles scattered about. It's a full decade after the KW, but better than nothing. http://www.calclassic.com/scenery.htm#Asia

2) SteveB launched a great pack of Soviet era vehicles (BRDM, BTR60, T-55) for FS9 - but work great in FSX. Alas, they represent army units a decade later than what MM is after ... again, just pointing out what's out there.

So if one wanted, you could add some of the aforementioned objects to the airfield(s) in the North Korean zones.

On the South side, the aforementioned Asia pack includes some of the main airports (Kimpo, etc). Additionally, there is an AI F-86 (by John Young, Flightsim) so with with a bit of patience, you could bang up a bit of KW period AI activity that way. There was a thread here not long ago where an AI B-29 was being modelled - again, with a repaint or two, you'd have a suitable AI for some bomber traffic of the period.

Again, nothing in one nice tidy package - but even within the constraints of a non-combat sim, with a bit of work, some nice opportunities exist to fly "reconnaissance" and experience a little bit of the flavour of the buildings and geography of that region, even if it's set a decade after the KW.

I'm working on a 'Cuba 62 pack now with some of the aforementioned military objects, and don't have the time to devote to KW ideas I've laid out - but perhaps they'll inspire MM or others to do something ....

Hope that helps,

DL

Sorry about the timing, I wasn't trying to start a political discussion, and I'm quite embarrassed. :redf: Guess I wasn't thinking, although while were on the topic of Korea, could anyone point me to a good F-80?
But seriously, thanks guys, and the Cuban pack sounds amazing delta!

The Alphasim freeware F-80 ports reasonably well into fsx - and if you search in the SOH library, the great CFS2 repainter Morton has done some very nice paints for it - some (as I recall) specifically for KW period duty. Sorry - don't have time to post links - hope that helps.

When I did read the OP request it never came to my mind that it would be inappropriate to make a historical scenario for the classic aircraft available to FSX for that time frame. In fact, I considered making at least a few airfields myself after the Milviz F-86 came out.
I don't think that a historical 1950s scenario would be offending in the face of what is going on today. If one feels appalled by that, he would be well adviced to just not downloading and use it.

So, at least in my opinion, that request is perfectly OK, no need to be embarrassed.

Cheers,
Mark

It would be neat to have some detailed depictions of the airbases those aircraft flew from. I was a bit surprised to find that of the 5 or 6 different Korean bases that I needed to locate in FSX, I was able to find each of them in the default FSX scenery/airports, though none had the same names as originally (as I recall), which was easily enough to figure out just by searching the original airport name and finding what it is today. It seems most of the old airfields have lived on to this day.

Here's perhaps some inspiration, starting with one of my absolute favorite Korean War era color photos:

The only airfield I know, without having to do some additional searching, is that in the first shot it is K-18 Kangnung. The easiest way to figure them out in the others would be to figure out which squadron the markings are of a particular aircraft in the photo and then deduce from that which airbase or airbases that squadron was based while in Korea.

Here are some more color photos from the Korean War (which those posted above were pulled from):

Not wanting to go political here, is there a good F-84E or G for FSX?
