Hi there, the title says it all.. The F-102 Delta Dagger is shown here during the Vietnam war. I tried to capture the spirit of the first supersonic Delta wing airplane. Hope you'll enjoy the video ;-)

Wow, a turning dogfight in a delta-jet with a Mig21 (with no gun to boot!). Not exactly a recipe for longevity, but cool nonetheless.

I was in the VT ANG's 158th FG, 134th FIS when we had F/TF-102A's. Many people don't realize that the F-102A was actually used in the Vietnam War for air defense alert/patrol, B-52 bomber escort and even for close air support using the 24 2.75 inch folding fin "Mighty Mouse" unguided rockets located in the missile bay doors of all F-102A's. (see Note 2 below).

A 134th FIS pilot friend of mine volunteered for a program called Palace Alert (see Note 1 below) and flew both air defense alert/patrol and B-52 bomber escort missions over Vietnam. He only had one relatively close contact with a MiG-21, but the MiG disengaged, went supersonic and my friend couldn't close within missile firing range

Note 1: "These ANG pilots served in Vietnam from 1968 to 1970 through a volunteer program called "Palace Alert." Palace Alert was an Air Force program that sent qualified F-102 pilots from the ANG to bases in Europe or southeast Asia for three to six months of frontline service. This program was instituted because the Air Force lacked sufficient pilots of its own for duty in Vietnam but was unable to activate ANG units since Presidents Johnson and Nixon had decided not to do so for political reasons. Thanks to Palace Alert, the Air Force was able to transfer much-needed National Guard pilots to Vietnam on a voluntary basis while not actually calling up their squadrons."

Note 2: "An Aviation Week article of the period credited the 509th FIS, an F-102 squadron stationed in Vietnam, with destroying 106 buildings, damaging 59 more, sinking 16 sampans, and destroying one bridge during 199 sorties over the course of 45 days."

According to an article printed in Wings of Fame, vol 17, the F-102 was only involved in one air-to-air combat, and in it, two American F-102A's got ambushed by Mig 21's, on 3 Feb, 1968.

Yes you are right, I read about this story too but I decided to deviate from the historical accuracy, and shoot down the MIG.. ;) It might have happened too, don't you think?

That agrees with the information on F-102A loss totals that I have seen which state:

"A total of 15 F-102 fighters were lost in Vietnam. Three were shot down by anti-aircraft or small arms fire, one was lost in air-to-air combat with a MiG-21, four were destroyed on the ground during Viet Cong mortar attacks, and the remainder succumbed to accidents."

Thank you very much! Actually, as a non commercial video, I used the Hendrix music without any authorisation. I know that in some countries, the video won't be available (germany for instance...).
