Hi all,

in real life, it looked pretty much the same the last time I came by - Monday.

In fact, it sometimes was so convincingly real that I became unsure whether it is sim or real life footage - with a bad resolution, but still. You see worse real life footage on youtube.

Great work!

Main occupants were 3 and 4 sqn, harrier , 230 sqn puma helicopters, and 18 sqn chinook helicopters @ mid 1980's.
Prior to 1976 had been home to 19 and 92 sqns with BAC Lightnings, but they moved across to Wildenwrath with Phantoms, and 18 sqn Wessex until @ 1980, 18 sqn was then disbanded before being 'stood up' again with Chinooks' in 1983.
Almost all the other RAF types at the time would occasionally visit, for example Canberra T17's were all based at Wyton, but on occasion would use Gutersloh (and the other RAFG bases) as 'forward operating bases' as their tasking required.

Main reason for it being home to the harriers and helicopters was its proximity to the old east/west germany border

Canberras were there in the 50s, the occupants throughout the 60s and 70s were FR Hunters and then Lightnings. Wiki link here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAF_G%C3%BCtersloh).

Hermann Goering had his own room in the mess, its' now used to house a small museum, anyway, here's the detail from here ----> http://www.wehrmacht-awards.com/forums/showthread.php?t=102905

Gutersloh has a cracking room in the officer’s mess building in which Goering
used to stay, one of the oak beams in the ceiling has been rigged with levers
and pulleys to collapse under control by using a switch underneath the floor
boards. It was rigged up out of Aircraft parts by the German Airmen as a
practical joke after Goerings speach about the roof collapsing if any enemy
bomber makes it to the Reich. The room now houses an impressive collection of
relic aircraft parts, machine guns and swastika marked wing panals that have
been dug up over the years on the Airfield

Nice screen shots!

Are all the visible aeroplanes static or AI?

All aircrafts are AI, collected from most AI I use with for example RAF Marham, RAF Bentwaters/Woodbridge, RAF Brüggen, Bitburg or most of Sqns that visited RAF Gütersloh that era.

RAF Gütersloh will come without any AI package but with introduction which stationed aircrafts you need (Harrier, Chinooks, Pumas).

Because RAF Gütersloh was one of the most frequented airbases at cold war, it is hard to decide what aircrafts the user finally will let appear at "his" Gütersloh. For those of you who have connections (by history or interest) to this airfield, I want to recommend the fantastic visual spotter compendium of this airbase

www.sg-etuo.de (http://www.sg-etuo.de) (also in english language)

With help of this site (for those who didn't know this site before) you can arrange the traffic close to the reality of the end '80s.

Favourites for RAF Gütersloh british visitors are the excellent Vulcans, Victors, Lightnings, Buccaneers, Canberras and Hunters of John Young, who did a sensational job on this AI aircrafts. After scenery release, we will give you more informations how to use these packages for Gütersloh if desired....

Most of further appropriate AI you will get at MAIW, often with included flightplans that have to be changed a little by datas of ETUO, Gütersloh.

Only some of the aircrafts are static, especially some models inside the Hangars while maintenance (Harrier with jetengine replacement, Lightning and Hunter beside) or the damaged Canberra at the firedump. These models are by courtesy of John Young (Lightning, Canberra, Hunter) and "Gaffer" from UKMIL (Harriers inside Hangar and Gate Guard)....

Jagdflieger
March 12th, 2013, 08:28
Thanks for that info Manschy. The airfield looks like it will support lots of AI aircraft. I look forward to populating it with all the great 50s and 60s Cold War aircraft that have become available recently.

I'm thinking about a trip to Europe later this year after the tourist season and if possible, I'll have to try and visit the real Gutersloh and see Herr Goering's room there.

March 12th, 2013, 13:09
Later on, we will do some additional packs as well: The Harrier Hides approx 20 miles around RAF Gütersloh for manoeuvres in the fields. Two sites will come, one set of Hides on old concrete road/apron, inside the "Senne Range", formerly a big military training area between Gütersloh, Bielefeld and Paderborn:

http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww328/Manfred67/hide_passig_gemacht_zps338979f7.jpg

...and another site nearby my hometown, where the Harriers actually landed in the late 70s

(here filled with the RAF Gütersloh MAIW AI Harriers GR-7)

Hi,

that probably was a section of the A33 autobahn, which wasn't completed between Paderborn and Bielefeld back then. There is a service area south of Paderborn which might have been the place in question. While the autobahn has been completed some time after 1990, it still is under construction north of Bielefeld. There is a joke about the A33 being numbered this way because it'll take 33 years to complete it...

Hi,

this locates the 1984 training site to the L793 road near Warendorf, severel steps of size below an Autobahn - a rural state road.

But of course, the point of the Harrier is that it does not need motorway-sized runways.

First, the hides sceneries will be a completely replacement because of much improvent regarding models, textures and performance as well. Furthermore, we will get a better placement to the original sites at that time...

And second, Pete and Volker, please have a look at this sites:

http://sg-etuo.de/Squadrons/No4SquadronGR3?p=3

Scroll a little, then you find a picture of a GR3 taxiing on the A33 indeed, that's been 1985 between Sennelager and Schloss Holte - Stukenbrock.

Translated text (roughly):

"XW768/O Harrier GR3 4Sqn A33 nearby Paderborn-Sennelager (October 1985) Today incredible doing this kind of operations - on the one hand because of the changed state of defence, on the other hand simply because of the today traffic density on german motorways....

Hi,

close to the release with RAF Gutersloh now, I did some experiments with the additonal Harrier Hides. They are completely new now, there would be too much problems to upgrade the existing versions.
So first of all, the ground polygon is done - also the trees are almost ready. The sensational textures are again from Pete Beeby - best possible trees textures for FS9 so far, I think....

Hi,

just to keep in touch with real life: As of yesterday, flying operations of Gütersloh airfield ceased as the last helicopters left with a ceremony. I was at work, but my wife heard the noise - given the distance, it must have been a lot of it.

Has anyone been able to find the "JYAI_RAF_Harriers_FS9.zip" at Flightsim? I have searched for the zip
name and authors name and come up with no matches. The only GR3 that does come up at Flightsim is the
(besides repaints) UKMIL GR3 for fs9. I also went over to MAIW site and found their UK Harriers zip, but
don't know if its the same model.

(edit) I checked the MAIW Harriers out and the models are by Nick Black and are the GR7 & 9 + TR10

Nice pics, Zsolt, as always!

No, this is a bad problem with the FS2004. Erroneously, in the default scenery, ETUO appears as a normal civil airport. THIS IS WRONG! RAF Gutersloh wasn't at all! So inside the manual, we advert to it:

(please have a look at):

4. AIRCRAFT PARKING AND FLIGHT PLANS

Note that the Harriers and Chinooks are parked at their squadron positions as
follows:

Harrier GR3, 3 Sqn HAS area to the southeast side
Harrier GR3, 4 Sqn. HAS area to the west side of the airfield
Chinook HC1, 18 Sqn Big Hangar 1 to the west side

Note that in the default version of Gutersloh, the airfield is used as a commercial
airport. Because of this, default traffic will appear from time to time.
To prevent this, you can disable the default traffic. Go to
FS9 /scenery/world/scenery and rename the file "Traffic030528.bgl" to
"Traffic030528.OFF" for example.

Hope this helps.

There is a slightly better way; decompile the above named traffic .bgl (Lee Swordy's traffic tools will do this)
you get three text files < Airports<Flightplans< and Aircraft

Simply use your favourite text file editor (windows notepad works) and replace any occurrences of ETUO in the flightplans.txt
file with a n other nearby airport code; recompile and you're good to go.

I have installed it in fsx and have the Alpha problem with ported fs9 objects. I tried to remove them
using IS3 (Instant Scenery) but they are still there. Funny thing is I had a few default hangers show

I have disabled default traffic, but I'm still getting some transients - oh well. I'm sure that rank has it's privileges for some. (I've got a civilian uncle working at a base in the US. He's a member of the flying club there. Up until the 9/11 stuff, the flying club was on base (it's off base now) - so he, as a civilian, has flown a little C172 on to the air force base on multiple occasions. I'm sure that that's probably still not impossible if you've got the right influence...)

Would it damage anything if I removed the GA parking spots from the afcad, though?

It's incredible scenery - I am really amazed by what you've been able to accomplish and still maintain a low FPS impact. This is going to be one the first things I install next time I reinstall FS...

I haven't. Although I HAVE disabled the default traffic, I've replaced it with as much else as I possibly can. I've got 160 megabytes of traffic files! Fully half of that is GA flight plans, so it would be, I think, a heck of a task to identify every guilty file, decompile them, and edit them. If removing GA traffic parking from the afcad would not cause a problem, that would be a much simpler fix.

Jagdflieger

I've got the Calclassic AI pack installed in my FS 9 with the MS file disabled. So far I haven't noticed any civilian traffic using the base. This also gives you a lot of more period friendly aircraft flying about the area on their scheduled runs to and fro. I've also enjoyed seeing some NATO Starfighters visiting the base from the Owl's Nest collection of AI F-104 Starfighters.

I've had some fun flying back and forth between RAF Gutersloh and RAF Bruggen last night and this morning. I just can't say enough about how nice this new scenery and AI traffic file is.

What a masterpiece in scenery creation.

This is what scenery design is all about.

Astounding work, Gentlemen!
This is truly one of the most impressive projects of its kind - and proves the levels of realism and excellence achievable in FS 9 by a dedicated team.

Many, many thanks for sharing the fruit of your labour. :applause:

Okay, after a long time absent, now some few more shots of the upcoming Harrier Hides additional pack. Now a lot of stuff has been added - for example GSE, barriers, groundcrew and cars. Some of the models time-tweaked. Release date unknown, please stay tuned...

At day, hides and barriers open for operations...

no, the Harrier Hides will be a separate addon - two packages of areas nearby RAF Gutersloh, EHNS Senne-Range and EHNR Riege around my living town. They currently progress well and hopefully, we can do first betas soon. So be a little patient, it is worth waiting :jump:

Im a huge fan of the Harrier even though I have never worked on one or flown in one (I was an F/A-18B hornet guy many moons ago, along with some other aircraft). I have always thought the idea of stopping then landing to be an interesting idea. So I wait for the hides. Ill even break out the 'snoopy' GR3 for a more accurate flight.

Cant wait,

I decided to give you some additional gimmicks, some days before manouvre shows the construction of the Hides: You can use this time for helicopter operations with Chinooks for troup or cargo support - or using Gazelles or Lynxs flying the chiefs for inspection ;-)

Hi chaps,

yes, it is a neverending story about good Harrier GR3 models - I agree with Zsolt. Only GR3 model for this era is definitely the UKMIL with its different versions, but very filthy modelled - no VC, wrong textures, no landing lights etc. But you can live with, Zsolt. It is freeware and I pimped it with new sound files and reworked aircraft.cfg with nice ground behaviour. Can send you, if you like.

The IRIS/Sigma looks fine, but is a no go - because it is modelled in a wrong scale! It is aprox 1.3 to 1, so wingspan and length much bigger than reality!

So if your dissatisfaction goes on, please wait for the FSX version (RAF Gutersloh and the Hides that should start after the FS9 Hides releases). I got the Razbam for the GR7 version and - maybe I will buy the Wilco GR3....That's for hope...

Thank you, Sean. But bear in mind, that the Hides are built for wingspan of the GR3 AI models of John Young only! Incidentally, the UKMIL Harrier is acurately built in scale, it fits exactly the JY AI Harriers wingspan.
Using a GR5/7/9 may cause disappointment because they wont fit into the Hides....
The FSX version will probably get two sets of Hides for using with the GR3 and GR7....

There is a Cavour over at FS-Shipyards (http://www.fs-shipyards.org/index.php?ind=downloads&op=section_view&idev=1); and, just today at Flightsim, the Italian CVL Giuseppe Garibaldi - not had a chance to install it yet, but has to be worth checking out.

Hi Tom,

there are following improvements:

1. Revised steering behaviour on ground:
- closer radius for better movements into the hides or in front of HAS - you now can almost spot turn
- Bigger range of spring - now you have the realistic Harrier nodding when stopping

2. Added "Soundlabs" awesome sound - among others you can hear the characteristic "discharging" jet whine sound after touchdown

3. Added weapon effects:

Cannon fire on the Aden Gun Pods on fuselage

http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww328/Manfred67/harrier_aden_passig_gemacht_zps51c29abe.jpg (http://s732.photobucket.com/user/Manfred67/media/harrier_aden_passig_gemacht_zps51c29abe.jpg.html)

It also comes with sound and animated bullit casings...

Drop effect of 500lbs Hunting BL 755 bombs

http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww328/Manfred67/harrier_dropbombs_passig_gemacht_zps0c10db07.jpg (http://s732.photobucket.com/user/Manfred67/media/harrier_dropbombs_passig_gemacht_zps0c10db07.jpg.h tml)

After some trials of altitude, you can see them explode on ground. Odd: Because it is a "rotate to user" texture-effect, bombs are fixed to the users view :banghead:

But I'm satisfied :applause:

Both effects are downloaded third party freeware you can get at i. e. flightsim or avsim. But I reworked the textures and positions to adjust it to the Harrier...

well I spent the evening playing around with Harriers on the Cavour as well as at Gutersloh and here are my thoughts. The size difference between the gr7/9 and the gr1/3 is very noticeable especially trying to maneuver on the carrier. the gr1/3 seemed to fit better on the deck. the gr1/3 however handled really weird on the ground it was like the main gear wasnt firmly on the ground it just kinda wallowed around. Already noted but there is no VC in the gr1/3. Are ther solutions for these issues? Also the Carvour doesnt have any kind of deck equipment on the main deck. Anybody know how to put some extra aircraft on it?

Sorry if this is way off topic but I cant wait for the hides to come out :)

Search for "italian_sh-3d_ai_libg.zip" (possibly "libg" will be all you need); this is a set of Italian repaints and flightplans for the Sea King by Giorgio Perotti ('Bismarck', for those of you who hang out at MAIW). When I get some time I'm going to try to add some extra flights to the MAIW Italian Harriers plans to populate them (and the Garibaldi) even further.

How would I install it into the aircraft.

Manfred, about 14 months ago, i dropped a longshot question into this thread, which to my delight turned out to be your WIP Harrier hides!

In the last year we have seen some excellent screens of this, and I wondered if this might be wrapped in nice mistletoe paper in time for Christmas 2014?
Would make a lot of folk very happy to have something like that in the sim for the holidays!

Oh folks, I know about the crux of the matter - but believe, it is foreseeable now! My german BETA testers are doing a (far too) good job so far and helped to eliminate most of elementary issues. Then, they unfortunately ask for possible solution to eliminate minor mistakes. After this, they detected things so small that makes this small but value addons real payware quality.... Sceneries will come with seasonal textures and lots of time tweaks that show vehicles, equipment and groundcrew at work at different places and times... Hopefully, when the ACGs team testing with the sensational RAF Wattisham (for FS9 and FSX both) is ready (please, take a look at: http://airfieldconstructiongroup.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=71&t=935&start=70 ), the guys over there will also help me with their experience to do the final BETA. I know it is worth waiting for (hopefully you still have FS9 installed LOL).....

Just because it is a hobby and some circumstances in life, sometimes things don't come to be that quick as expected. So please keep on bearing with this project. Currently, the really complex AI traffic is tested at least.

Am really enjoying the FS2004 version in FSX - wondering, though - which are the tree bgls? I'd like to take those out as they aren't showing properly in FSX. Otherwise, and by thinning out a few of the ground vehicles - I'm very happy with this scenery!

After taking such a long while, we are thinking about a seperate release of the Riege Operation Area first (ETUH).

Manschy
July 16th, 2016, 15:22
Dear community: Please let me tell you, the project isn't dead and still ongoing. But due to the real life and simultaneous work at a native FSX version of both - RAF Gutersloh_X and the Harrier Hides - unfortunately this project has come into a standstill for a while.
I have to say thank you for patience again.
We currently are working on the AI traffic that take such a lot of time to work properly because it is so tricky to let the Harrier do their vertical job correctly!
You have to know, this traffic (adjusted AI Harrier of John Young for the RAF Gutersloh scenery) now have to work for all three sites together. With release, you will get a complete and reworked traffic that offers spotting pleasure for hours....
I feel so positive about that my development partner Michael will get it right. About months, he also is the one-man-testing group and man, I have to tell you he find each missing numberplate or wrong tweaked groundcrew member - I hate him! :a1310: But after all effort I have to say, it is well worth the wait!
Finally I can say, one of the two sites - the Riege operation area nearby my hometown (ETUH) is completely finished and proofed hidden in a vault. The second site is still a tough nut: Imagine you have an operation site where the Harrier are landing vertically on a plate, taxi across a concrete street, drives along a small path to park correctly inside their hides. Then they have to move straight forward in drive-through-methode by taking a complete other path back to the VTOL pad for take-off. That's only one half of the trick. At the same time, some other Harriers that are landing to the other side of the operation site are landing on another VTOL pad and while taxiing back to the hides, they should NOT clash with Harriers which are taxiing to the pad for take-off. Because the difficulty is the Harriers only have the runway to taxi - in both directions simultaneously! So a hard work to do the perfect timing in the flightplans....
So again, the project is still ongoing - a little slowly because of the explained reasons though. But believe me, we are anxious to get the users feedback when these addons are ready. So: Stay tuned!!!

In my mind the project is actually as good as dead

This is not meant to sound discouraging, just that I've done enough projects to know that resurrecting a cold job can be a real mission in itself.
Three years on... it's cold.
http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/showthread.php?76121-FS2004-Freeware-RAF-Gutersloh-PREVIEW&p=840396&viewfull=1#post840396

If you are distracted by the other sims, have you considered:
SOH is one of the best repositories of highly skilled and experienced makers of all sorts that you can get under one umbrella.
You might think about "subcontracting" some of the work!
Milton has demonstrated how good this can be, right in this very forum.

Wing_Z, I can understand all your objections! I think the same when watching the FSDeveloper threats with all their projects in progress. But please bear in mind:

1. You have to distinguish between payware, in this case the user has a claim to get an announced product sometime, otherwise the company crashes - and freeware, in this case only the developers decide when or whenever they share their work with the community.

Don't misunderstand me: I totally agree when users are on edge after a project is teased and teased and teased and seems not to be finished anytime... That's the point of annoyance I feel responsible for and have to explain myself....
But unfortunately, as against payware developer, we are spending our spare time to create addons we are satisfied with - and nothing else matters. To speak in my behalf, due to my job, my family (no more other hobbies lol) I might have found it easier to create just a simple AFCAD file with some default ADE objects - done! Fine for the users, but boring to me....
Look, it is comparable with a model railway: Some are satisfied with a simple "0" to let the train move, some are satisfied not before each tree or car is in its right place....

Exclusively, today I will add the English Manual for the Hides FS9 for you have a look at. I think it will speak in favour of a detailed scenery....Okay, date and minor details (Airfield Construction Group exists no longer...) has to be corrected...

2. Subconstracting is a good approach! That's what happened with the AI traffic so far, because I spent too many time with senseless experiments. Now Michael is the man for it - you must consider that the traffic should have to be reworked COMPLETELY also for the released RAF Gutersloh so far to work properly with the Hides as well...

Finally:

Wing_Z, I have to thank you for this additional kind of motivation and it is not discouraging at all! For though I / we like compliments at all (that's what freeware designer are subsisting on), sometimes an alarmcall is valid!

So again: We are currently adjusting the final AI traffic - and if Christmas is approaching, Christmas is approaching, but the Hides will be released :ernaehrung004: !

Just to say, Michael did a great job on adding some few more models to the VTOL-Harriers recent days. We needed some, because in John Young's AI RAF Gutersloh Harrier Package, there currently are only two VTOLs. So no more new models were added but the consisting ones got some new paints to appear with other identity. Thanks again John for these outstanding aircraft and all your support with our project.
All Harriers will get own Call Signs adapted to the areas.

I will also remind you we are using Pete Beebys great trees that makes these sceneries that enormously real for a FS9 addon! They are worth waiting...

Furthermore, Michael is still working hard at the AFCAD to manage the taxi movements of the Harrier like they did those days. Means using only the landing pads for touch down and not the trees around :applause: . Okay, and meanwhile I got managed to fix all missing car plates, cut the lawn around and scavenge the street. Means designing is done, still some technical conditions remaining....

Important: I have to point to the fact again that both areas (ETUH and ETUS) will come adjusted to the Aerosoft Addon Scenery Germany 3. Users of the default FS9 will find end of some roads in the middle of nowhere. Finding some proper connections that won't work in practise. That's for now, we are close to the end....

I have to add my gratitude to all of the others who have posted to this thread. ETUO is the most engaging addon I have experienced in thirteen years of fs9. While there are several other great ones, The Gutersloh scenery, even in its current form is amazing. The Harrier hides expansion looks to be another whole level of involvement. Thanks go to those who are creating it.

Happy new year, chaps - and real good news this evening. The Harriers finally found their playground!
Mmpf, you'll think. What's the difference between these shots and those apprx two years ago?

Let me explain.

My shots those days show the consisting AI traffic of the Harriers I managed by my own - just to show the progress of the operation areas.
The todays pics show Michaels traffic, first movements they use to behave - taxiing correctly and with a significant traffic density WITHOUT plopping away or clashing - they even find their Hides without wrecking environment. On the screens you can see the Harriers take-off in an opposite direction. The PAD in front to the left is used by the VTOL aircraft only for take-off and landing, while the default runway is used by the normal STOL and VTOL Harriers. Michael considered to set the legs as short as possible but barely in a state of flux. There is still some fine tuning regarding wind direction and wind force, also the behaviour with upcoming traffic when other former NATO aircraft visit RAF Gutersloh - don't forget - that's just the home base of these Harriers they arrive from or departe back daily.

As Manfred said prior, the Germany 3 scenery package from Aerosoft makes RAF Gutersloh seamlessly blend into that large region of Germany. I really like that the Miele vacuum cleaner factor is just a few miles away from the air base, with smoke coming from it's stack.

But due to the circumstance that it will take until two days at Flightsim and Avsim ready for downloading, we decide to upload it next Thursday. That's because we want to present the scenery a big audience as possible - means a weekend and not the Tuesday after Easter.
But how about an upload here at SOH? We would be glad about this option. Please let me know...
