View Full Version : Taxiing the Saab-105

Great little airplane and I'm really enjoying the updated FSX Beta Version. One minor problem I have is that when taxiing, the aircraft has a lot of "sway" to it. As long as I'm taxiing straight ahead it isn't too bad, but make any adjustment with the NWS and it can start a sway motion that will increase as you try to compensate. . .like a dog chasing it's tail. Have any of the "105 Users" noticed this as well and is there anyone who has been successful in tightening up the suspension? lol

Mine has that tendency too but as long as I taxi under 20 knots the problem is not too bad. One reason might be that the MOI values are too high for FSX. From what I have seen in other portovers, MOI values for FS9 can be much higher than the calculated values which in FSX may cause this swaying ground handling. I did put the empty weight, length and wingspan in a calculator for a jet with engines in the fuselage and this is the result:

empty_weight_pitch_MOI= 7294 ;was 80000
empty_weight_roll_MOI = 3354 ;was 40000
empty_weight_yaw_MOI = 8633 ;was 40000
empty_weight_coupled_MOI= 0 ;was 1200

I tried with the new values and ground handling has improved a bit for me.

BTW: I reduced the [flight_tuning] correction for the ailerons because the jet is more responsive now:

aileron_effectiveness=1.5 ;was 2.000

Falcon,
There is only one thing that will do that: input of aerlions (along with rudder) on turns. Perhaps your controler has picked up some 'bad habits' (hehe). That, plus too much braking on turns? I worked on it's cnt pts mainly to enable traps without the nose gear digging into carrier deck. Here is the tweaked cnt pts. Also ck braking scale (should not be 3.0, even if it needs it) and moi's. Also steer angle. Want the whole burrito (NEW air file, NEW cfg)? Goes Mach 1. Lands 80 kts. Cruise 610 kts. Will zip FDEs and post later today if you want. Here are some tweaks.

//MOI's
empty_weight_pitch_MOI= 80000.000
empty_weight_roll_MOI= 40000.000
empty_weight_yaw_MOI= 140000.000 //o=40000.000
empty_weight_coupled_MOI= 0.000 //o=1200.000

Falcon posted in a separate thread on 23 Jan that he found it at simviation. No link so you'll have to search there for it. :salute:

Thanks for looking into this Chuck, but I have to take exception with the statement that the rocking/swaying I'm encountering can only be caused by my control inputs and braking. If that were the case, I would have that problem with almost every aircraft I fly and the fact is, I have really only encountered maybe two or three that had that problem and all were corrected with tweaks to the aircraft.cfg file and maybe even the airfile. I am a very good pilot, light on the controls and very smooth in flight. I don't over-control and this airplane, with very little input will begin the swaying motion almost on it's own. The tweaks that Henk supplied worked quite nicely and while there is a tad bit of sway left, it is quite easy to taxi now and turn without having to slow until the erratic movement subsides.

As for the changes to the FDE, the airplane currently does quite well in cruise. . .certainly to my needs and I don't do carrier ops so I have no need for anything like that. I'm sure there are others who may read this thread who find the tweaks to their liking, so by all means post them and allow others to benefit. Thanks again!

Falcon,
I said that in jest (notice the 'hehe'). I am sure you are a good pilot-no question there. What I should of said is that it don't do it for me. No swaying. And therefore I can't 'fix' it? I downloaded it from Simviation Jan 26 (Saturday) so perhaps it was the updated version (with no sway). The gear (compression) IS 'mushy' and to compensate they placed the cnt pts for wheels wider than it's 'real' footprint. I moved the wheels closer together and still got no swaying. So it's a mystery what is going on. If you increase the braking scale to 2.0 you will see what the nose wheels does (digs in quite a bit). I rack my brain and do testing until the cows come home, sometimes days on end. But I can't make it sway. Sorry.

And my FDEs are 'hot' (Mach 1.1) so maybe I shouldn't. I found it needed -3.0 pitch trim to fly level (fixed that). Also I did not like the flaps (changed those). I added views (tail,wing (l/r) ,landing gear unique, and nose). I added tailhook (it's invisible but it 'works' good) and FSX carpet bombing effect, by Claudio Pizzirani (bomb) just for fun). It's not 'spec' in other words. But it's fun to fly. It could use better handling (aerobatics?) tweaking, but did not work on that yet. I watch Pro Bowl now. Work on it more tomorrow. Cheers.

EDit: The 'floats' were all wrong, so the fix is in cnt pts above. If nothing else you won't tip over if on the water.

Your revisiting this little plane inspired me to paint a profile and I am proceeding with doing a repaint too..

before messing with MOI's, i HIGHLY recommend simply changing the dampening ratio for the landing gear in the contacts section of the config file. Do remember that a value of 0.0 is completely undamped and 1.0 is completely damped. Increasing the number closer to 1.0 with give the plane stiffer ride..

its a beauty - no taxiing issues for me...might be a bad install or as another suggested some setup issue..?

Well, the 'bad install', etc, reasons for this bird being so messed up might just be mute. I came up with a set of FDEs that just might please you guys. The cfg and air file don't EVEN resemble the originals. Just so you know. It's ALL NEW. And it works beautifully (my opinion). Read the ReadMe for info. Nothing unusual. Everything is spec (well, almost). Hey 99.9% is good enough for me-ha! Enjoy.

This thread in now on page 3. So I figure a bump is due, just in case someone else might want to use the FDEs with the Saab 105. It is a REAL airplane. It does perform in air shows. It should be enjoyed by more simmers. I know it's 'just a trainer' (and not a 'fighter') but it's still really cool airplane. And in FSX. Get it.

Quick question... can your new FDEs be used with the other variants (in the role and special packs) as well? Easy enough to paste in the liveries from each original .cfg but does anything else change between models?

Thanks for the improvements.

The only thing I noticed is that the '4 seater' model is a different file SIZE compared to the 'vip' model but the textures are the same (ie: they are both '4 seaters'). I only installed the '4 seater' model (MY 'favorite' model) and not the other models (I don't NEED 18 variations/paints-cheesh). I downloaded the 'New' (native) files but did not try them yet.

And YES you can use the FDEs with all the different models. Only the (fltsim.xxx) sections (ie:the title=,model=,texture=, NAMES differ). I would make a seperate install of your favorite MODEL (and 'archive' the rest to a 'temp' hangar/folder) and that way keep it simple, yet organized. Go 49ers!:sheep: :running:
