We're in the final stages of development and thought to share an album of screen shots of the project. Poncho Barnes' 613K is in development and that will conclude the aircraft modeling. A accompanying scenery package is in development that will revert Cleveland Hopkins International Airport to Cleveland Municipal Airport circa 1932 home of the National Air Races with the pylon race course of that day.

It's a remote possibility. The Chevrolair inline on 613K was a real dog and was replaced almost immediately after it's first race. Plagued by cylinder over heating and oil leaks. Edward Phillips writes in his book "Mystery Ship" that the performance was "bland" in comparison with the Whirlwind powered sister ship 614K. Clarence Clark was assigned to pilot the ship and from the first flight had to cope with overheating engine and oil temperatures. He discovered that he had more power at two thirds throttle than full because of problems with the twin Stromberg carburetors. When interviewd by the author in 1981, Clark described the Chevrolair-powered Model R an an unpleasant airplane to fly. It is interesting to note that although Clark placed third place in Event number 9 at Cleveland in 1929, the aircraft's power plant was deemed so unreliable that 613K was crated up and shipped back to Wichita to await its fate and the D-6 engine was removed and returned to the Chevrolair company. Eventually 613K was fitted with the Wright Whirlwind J-6-7 engine and eventually purchased by Florence "Poncho" Barnes and the rest is history. Poncho's version is currently being modeled and will be part of the package. If we decide we have time to build the D-6 version we will endeavor to make it as unpleasant as Clark described. As it is these planes are a handful in the sim.

I can't wait to have these in FSX - I have always been a big fan of the various designs.

I collected a few photos off the internet and did some research into these a few years ago when I was thinking of possibly modeling them. It was interesting to me to find out that Pancho Barnes' original "Mystery Ship" still remains to this day in (very) private hands, in England (!), having been restored to immaculate condition: http://legendofpanchobarnes.com/film/production-journal/312-a-mystery-no-longer.html
(http://legendofpanchobarnes.com/film/production-journal/312-a-mystery-no-longer.html)
The intention has always been to have the aircraft flying when completed, though I don't know if that has yet occurred or if that is what the owners still want to do with the aircraft. For the amount of privacy surrounding the aircraft's owners, I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the aircraft has been flying, just without anyone else knowing about it.

The well known Younkin (air show) family also has a "Mystery Ship", though it is a superb reproduction, rather than an original, that was built in the late 70's from the original blueprints by the Younkin family. Apart from still performing in air show routines today (the only "Mystery Ship" known to be flying at this time), this aircraft was also used in the movies "The Rocketeer" and "Pancho Barnes".

These were also extremely fast aircraft for their time (having even exceeded what the designers had thought they would achieve - something like 225-235 mph max speed, and a 170 mph cruise) - beating out the military designs for the same years.

The following two photos are of Matt Younkin in the Younkin family's "Mystery Ship" reproduction, taken at Oshkosh. It was because of this aircraft that the other Younkin family air show aircraft have been painted in red and black paint schemes.

I'm also quite excited about the Cleveland scenery! The Cleveland racing pylons was one of the details of the old Bill Lyons FS9 "Golden Wings" scenery that I used quite a bit, including doing some online 1930's racing.

I agree with you it's my personal favorite flier of the set. Also notable for this release all, except for two gauges, the Cylinder head Temp and Fuel Flow in the 614 and 1313 aircraft, are 3D modeled. If I can develop code for those they will be modeled as well. First time for us and won't be the last.

Thanks, I did make a mistake on the graphic, it should say 5 racers, not six. There are five different versions or models and 7 liveries. I can't seem to edit my post here so cannot change it on the first post but will show it here.

The graphic is the opening title to the promo movie I am doing and will feature a short race from various planes and angles. For anyone that loves classic planes and classic racing this package will be a dream come true. For the video I have set up a fs recorder race of several planes and I have been around the pylons many times now and it is really a GAS (no pun intended, well, maybe a little)

The mixture control is below the switch marked starter. From what I see in the screen shot you have it full lean rotate it so the handle is at the 8 o'clock position. That should do it. Also, I see in your screen shot some object that don't belong in the race scenery. Rebooting the sim should get rid of those.

Amazing package ... the scenery, the planes! :applause:
I had some issues in the beginning, but figured out that all the problems were my fault. None to do with the package.
Iīd like to register here the amazing support that Spad gave to me. Thanks my friend!

And now, a question if some of you guys can help:
Is there a way to create a "mission" with a race in the scenery? Something like the race with the default P51 of accell package? Not a flight created with FS-Recorder, but a real race mission. I know a little about the mission files, but before starting researching this, iīd like to know if itīs possible.

Thanks!

I've updated the package to correct a bug with the uninstaller and correct the 1313 panel entry. The current uninstaller does not recognize the user as having rights to uninstall the program. It is of no risk to the users system and would require that the package components be removed manually. If anyone who purchased the package before 0700 EDT today wishes the update re-download the package from the link provided you upon purchase and run the installer again. You can redirect the installer to a temp file. No need to reinstall the entire package. This will place a functioning installer in your control panel. The panel config fix for 1313 was done immediately after release so most of you will have that in place. PM me directly with concerns if needs be.

Is anyone up for some online racing? I would like to get a few guys together for a race at a time when it would be possible. I really never flew FSX online so this would be all new to me. If you want to race I am interested in the early, shorter course so practice going round it a few times to figure out the pylon layout.

Thanks!

Cool idea, I am not sure how to go about making a mission but if we could dissect the Reno racing missions and maybe copy parts of them?

You asked for it............you got it! Because of the caring and support the SOH community has shown us over the years, and with this project in particular, the team and I want to say thanks by making the package available exclusively to members of SOH at a discount of 20% off retail. This is not on our web page and won't be in vendors shops until tomorrow at the earliest. This offer will remain active for 24 hours, at which time the link will expire and this post deleted.

Thanks SOH!!!

The discount period has expired as the products are now up on the vendor sites. The link however remains active as I find that I am unable to edit this post. No worries. I hope folks are having fun

I had a chance to fiddle around with this package quite a bit today. What a fantastic setup! I can't think of a better money/value ratio in FS. Seriously....where else can you get 5 planes, 7 liveries, and scenery for less than $25 USD nowadays?? It's also rather convenient that Phenick Field (as bundled with the GAS Ryan pack) is only a relatively short hop away from Cleveland, as included in this Travelair pack. There seems to be a rather consistent favor towards Ohio among the Golden Age Sim team! :icon_lol: Maybe a vintage Waco factory in Troy, OH next? :mixedsmi: As long as the GAS team keeps making 'em, I'll keep buying 'em. :applause:

Appreciate The Kind words, and the loyal support!!....We'll keep making them, however there are only about 178 more to go so?......I did not notice till you just mentioned Phenick being handily close by....Hmmm may have to fly out of there with a New Stinson Gullwing and advertise Gulf Oil Products while I chew the fat with Doug Davis Or Jimmy Or...Have fun with the New Package and thanks again!!...Best Gil
