Another great artist of centuries back... the Dutch painter Rembrandt - greatly admired for his tremendously
realistic portraits and human group compositions - used the camera scura [black box with a pinhole that focuses
upside down like a lens -a predecesor of the photographic camera of today way back in the 18th century] to project a scenes on a canvas.
He would trace the main features of said scene on the wall or canvas ... and of course, with deft painting artistry complete the painting....
not unlike we as texture and aircraft profile artists do in the sim environment or aeronautical illustrations ...
The tecnique is especially useful to paint detailed replicas of things or people... the naked eye and eye-hand coordination
are seldom such to produce free-hand rendered objects that are symmetrically exactly so...
To accurately portray, let's say, the profile of a P-51 Mustang requires a tremendously accurate sense of lengths, spacing, etc. to do it free-hand...
whereas an object in action can be done free-hand because perspective and paralax deformations are asymmetrical and although a finished product
might be inexact it still creates an illusion of reality... Some people can do this instinctively and other by training...However, oftentimes
I see 2-D panels that ignore these rules and to the trained eyes immediately look like something is wrong... (a winshield edge that goes one way
and the sunshield another... without aiming at a common vanishing point...etc. )
