View Full Version : de Havilland Dash 7 FSX Port-Over Released

The de Havilland Dash 7 goes Gold. Two packages, FSX Port-over and FS9 Native, containing 3 models, 7 liveries, 4 FM's by 2 authors (FSX and FS9), and custom panels, gauges, and sounds.

Thanks to all of you who participated in the beta testing efforts. Twenty-one issues or suggestions were identified most of which were addressed.

In addition I added VC Rain, correctly implemented condition levers, improved lighting and vc gauge backlighting, yoke textures, floor textures in the cockpit rear area, etc.

There were a few items I did not address due to impact on mapping and textures, or no real effect on performance or operations, or not possible. For example, I could not slow the spoiler rate of extension because the spoilers are alse used as spoilerons. I did not do separate loadouts for the passenger, combi, or empty bay area models. I did not fix the OMI test switch to light the lights.

The FSX package is separate and not useable in FS9. It has 2048 DXT5 primary textures and the panel.cfg is different regarding gauges not compatible there. The FM's were built and tested for FSX.

There is a follow-on bonus package coming with a full cargo unit and the Canadian Ice Recon models. This will likely be released in January. There will also be an additional 5 liveries or so.

The paint kit is not yet available and I do not have a time frame for that yet. Likely in January.

Thanks to Mike Kelly who really pushed this project to a higher level; thanks to Bernt Stolle and Tom Falley for giving us flight models from guys who actually flew the Dash 7's; thanks to Nigel Richards who developed some really great sounds for the Dash 7 from actual Dash 7 recordings, and to Scott Thomas who over time, developed the panels and gauges.

So is this a native FSX model or an FS9 model ported to FSX?

From the first post it reads like a FS9 model ported to FSX.

Regardless thanks for the update!

From the first post it reads like a FS9 model ported to FSX.

Regardless thanks for the update!

The title really says it all:

"de Havilland Dash 7 FSX Port-Over Released"

This is an all new FS9 model with primary textures developed at 2048 saved as DXT5 and used a shared texture folder with a texture.cfg file, flight models developed for FSX, and tested since last January in FSX, and beta tested in FSX SP2 with Accel.

With that said, it is an FS9 model, built for FS9 but made more friendly as an FSX port over.

It is NOT FSX Native, makes no pretenses that it is, and does not remotely compare in quality to native FSX native models. And if you are that concerned about it being native, I think you will be disappointed. Don't waste your time with it.

All the extra efforts were invested for those simmers who are okay with flying portovers, not to appease native enthusiasts.

May i ask:
- Can someone tell if a Air Kenya Express paint is available for this bird?
- Is there a way to reduce the intensity of landing and taxi light? It΄s diffcult to see the runway with them.

There are no paints for this aircraft; all new exterior and mapping for textures. Paint kit will be avaialbe in January.

You should never use the landing lights except on approach and takeoff.

Never use taxi lights with landing lights. Taxi lights are for ground maneuvers.

I agree that the 4 landing lights are bright. Use them to land, turn them off once on the runway and don't blind your fellow pilots.

Thank you Bruce; you have been a long-time supporter. And, it's also a Christmas gift to me as the Dash 7 has been on my desk since 2009 and I can begin to see light at the end of this tunnel. We do have two more models, 5 liveries and a paint kit to get out in January. That will be the end of Dash 7 projects for me ... forever. :-)

Milton, around the time I first ventured into civilian flight simming, your Dash 7 model was much talked about. Despite its less-than-stellar commercial success, it's an iconic aircraft, and an equally iconic flight sim model. It seems your name is permanently associated with it, and whenever anyone asks a payware developer to do one, they always seem to add ' I'm sure Milton Shupe will help out'.

If this is the end of the line for you and the Quad Otter, then thank you for what you have done with such a wonderful aircraft. Its been a very enjoyable flight. A happy 2013 to you.

Just a quick shout-out to Milton Shupe and all you developers. I cannot thank you enough for all the hard work, HOURS, that you guys spend putting out stuff like this. I have had some Shupe-ware over the years, and I appreciate it.

A tip of the brandy glass in your direction, SIR! All you developers that have done all this work, especially freeware, should all be proud of what you've done. I am simply time-constrained to ever learn how to do what you do, and I'm one of the many anonymous downloaders of all this work. I cannot do it, and I want to thank everyone that can do it and does.

THANK YOU! And my your years be filled with all the good things, love, life, laughter, libations, and good flying for all your years.

Milton, I have seen native payware which hasn't looked this good. You should be nothing but proud about this gem. I got tons of enjoyment out of this model in FS2002, FS2004 - and am thrilled to bits it's been ported over to FSX. The AFG Caravelles and Mr. Lavigne's Falcon 50 shared a two-way tie for my personal "Best FS9 Civilian Port-over Model" - It's now (at least) a three-way tie. Fast (in terms of FPS, at least!) on my mediocre PC, and the FM seems to have picked up a nice challenging character from what I recall it having in FS9. Spent a couple of hours at a few "hot and high" African bush strips - nothing but unadulerated pleasure. I'm likely one of the few that still enjoys using the 2D panels on airliner types, and so many models have the view point/perspective bodged up. This was as smooth a transition between 2D/VC as one could expect, making ILS shots a breeze.

Bravo - and may the repaints begin!

Thanks,

DL

I added Miltons latest Dash-7(dash7pkgx.zip).,last night.Awsome plane for sure.

I do have a couple of questions.

I noticed when flying it at night.I didn't see any exterior logo lights that show up,such as the logo light on the tail.If they are there. How do I activate them.I did try the logo light switch.I kind of figured they would come on automatcly at night.
Maybe the plane doesn't have exterior logo lights for night flying?.

I do see the two FM's folders. What are these models, and what do they change, knowing I'll have the backup my current acft.cfg and air file.I wanted to ask first, before I try one of them etc.

I saw in the reply's the necessary files I need to add to the [Lights] section of the acft.cfg for those that have the shockwave lights.I added these, the way I see them replacing the one's that were already there.
I also added the [smokesystem]entries.I didn't know where to put them.So I added them at the bottom of the acft.cfg?.

I did read in the readmes there will be a bonus pack coming out soon, for this particular package. Is there any time frame when this will come out?.I downloaded this plane from flightsom.com

Thanks for any feedbackes

There are 2 FM's. each done by a real world (former) Dash 7 pilot.
The folders are the master copies so no need to back up the active one.
Just copy either one and paste it in the active area.
Bernt's FM requires elevator trim at zero for takeoff.
Tom's FM requires elevator at 6-7 degrees at takeoff ( in the white area by the trim wheel).
Both fly to the numbers, flight characteristics are slightly different.
You can identify the active one by looking in the aircraft.cfg.

The Dash 7's had no Logo lights per the Dash 7 pilots on the project.

You may add the smoke section anywhere.

The second pack (cargo and CIR) will be released as soon as the liveries are finalized. I believe there are 5 in total, some for teh first and second releases.

A paint kit will be released once the liveries are done.

Thanks for your edits for the shockwave lights and the smoke settings.

I'm having an issue with the smoke itself. When I'm sitting at idle and braks set.I have a ball of smoke in front of each engine nose cone. When I start to taxi. The smoke will start to trail back behind the engines as it should.
I don't know how to set the values to move the smoke to the back of the engines, when I'm sitting still?.

I'm attaching a screenshot of the issues sitting still.

Thanks for any assistance

Looks like you are using a smoke effect that is shared so I recommend that you do not change it.

However, if you wish to make a copy of the and rename it to dash7start.fx or whatever, you can change the coordinates in the effect for the Dash7.

The effects are offset from the engine locations so you must adjust the offset values.

They look like this and there may be multiple occurrences.

X Offset=-0.55, -0.55
Y Offset=-1.06, -1.06
Z Offset=-1.45, -1.45

To adjust fore/aft, change the Y values to be less positive/more negative.

Values are stated in meters.

Thanks Milton for your reply to my quote.

The only other question I have is.

When I go into my sim and select one of the planes. How do I determine which one is the all pax plane with no cargo in it.So when I move myself to the pax area. All there is,is passenger seating?.When I put my mouse over any of the planes. It doesn't indicate which of the three models is an all passenger plane, before I select it?.

One thing I forgot to ask.Are there wing views with this model?.If not will there be updates in the future that adds wing views etc.

Great product Milton. This Dash 7 is just as good if not better than a payware.Hope to see more of your products.I have some of your other planes as well.I'm enjoying all your Avia56 planes as well.I do see there are some fixes out for the AVIA56 Amphibian plane.I have the update download, but I'm not sure how to add the fix for the amphibian etc.

My smoke edit uses the normal [smokesystem] effect which is controlled by the "i" key, which by default will always be off. Turning the smoke on while setting still in any plane will cause unusual visuals -- like you have. To get around this, I never turn on the smoke until I'm heading down the runway for takeoff.

I'm currently trying to grasp what your saying. If I'm using a shared smoke effect.Where are some places I can look in my FSX to find a shared smoke effect, other than in each plane I have installed. It would take me forever to check all the planes I have installed. The shared file might be hard to find for me.

The Type in the Airplanes Selection screen for the passenger versions is where you look.

There are two passenger versions, the Factory prototype Dhc-7-1 and the Dhc-7-102.

Just follow the instructions in the Avia 56 update and all should be well.

I'm adding another screenshot.

I see the ones you are referring to.When I downloaded the package.I also downloaded the Asnett paint for it.It does show up as the Dhc-7-102.When I'm in the pax area. It's part cargo and part pax.The reason I'm asking about this is.When I downloaded the package.I looked at the numerous screenshots you have in the download, before I installed it.A couple of the shots show all passenger seating. The others showed two cargo boxes in the front, and pax seats the rest of the way back?.

As new paints come out from other authors over time.I'm assuming I'll add them just like I did with the Asnett paint correct?.Unless I have to edit it's config,to determin which model I want the paint to show up in.Hmmm!.

While I'm here. What is the latest news about your newest version of the Howard 500 for FSX?.Just curious.

I am not aware of any repaints for this Dash 7. The paint kit has not been released. If you downloaded one, it may be for the old version.

There is no new Howard 500 project and I am not involved in any FSX version. TuFun is dressing up the old FS9 model as a texture to be used if you ported over the FS9 version to FSX.

There is a native FSX version that was done with my permissions. I believe it is in the SOH library.

I do have a ported over from FS9 to FSX version.Do I need to get with TuFun.I'm pretty sure I got the updated 500 from SOH,but It's been a while. The one I have is the hw500vc4 I installed it April 2012.

I can't tell in the files who or when It was released. Can you tell me where the latest version is of the Howard here at SOH?.Than I'll have to find out which one Tufun is dressing up?.

You are going way off topic here.

It is the same version, but now with an updated model mapping that he will release with his paints, I guess.

Mike Kelly and I are doing final reviews of the beautiful London City Airways scheme (for FSX 2048 DXT5 and FS9 1024 textures) and this one should be released shortly.

Perhaps not on the subject ( Sorry) I have noticed that the Flaps indicator doesn't move pass 25-40° it stops in between. The flap handle, on the throttle panel does move all the way down ; Is this normal?
