View Full Version : 1947 Yak-18 "Max"

I spotted this on flightsim.com and gave it a go. Excellent modeling in the VC, by the way. Readme credits the model and textures to SWingman, 2D-gauges to Wishmaster with special thanks to Kirill Knovalov and Don Bodenstedt. The basic cockpit labeling is in Russian however replacement textures are available that change the labels to English. Well worth a look.

Really ? That's good news. I will definitely give it a go then.
Thanks a lot for the info, Roger and Falcon :ernae:

I would really love to see the Yak-18T converted to native FSX too... It seems to be one of the most interesting models for FS9, but the engine gauges seem not to work properly in FSX, preventing a manual start from Cold and Dark...

Yet another superb production by Alex Pisarenko (SWingman), and as has been noted, like his FSX Ryan STA, the aircraft is built for/native to FSX. Can't wait to put some time on the aircraft when I get the first opportunity.

Yep, his VC work is first rate and the only thing I may upgrade is the exterior to a Hi-Res texture set. A very enjoyable trainer to sit in and fly, nice that it's a retractable and I'm assuming that the engine sounds are representative of the actual airplane.:salute:

Yep, not the normal type for me, but I really appreciate a well modeled VC and this one fit the bill. While it's slow for my taste, it is a joy to fly. Brian, do you fly "for" SWA or just fly "on" SWA, lol. I know a pilot who did fly for SW at one time, also named Brian.

But, i must say, excelent work by the developer, again! Thanks for that! :ernae:

I was doing a little background research on the Yak 18 "Max", and read that it did have poor rudder authority. Swingmans FS9 version has handling characteristics supported by someone who flew a Yak 18. I am sure this one is as authentic as possible too. The sound is good too. The engine sound was said to be reminiscent of a washing machine. This one sure does sound like it at low RPM (Chuga chuga).

Maybe poor was the wrong choice of word, it's more like non-existent, lovely plane though.

YoYo

Yep, for me the rudder has a problem, but not on the ground, in the air. It works in this time in oposite side. Just if your last wheel will be in the air (from take off) this effect starts to be present.

I'll try upping the rudder effectiveness in the .cfg and see what happens. I want just enough rudder to turn but still have the lousy rudder input the Yak "Max" is known for. Will report back.

Yep, some research really helps before criticizing something we've never flown. Since the airplane was tested by someone who has flown the Yak 18. . .I tend to go with that over anything or anyone else.

The airplane is beautifully modeled, flies the way it should and apparently even sounds the way it's supposed to. . .pretty hard to find any fault with it. . .especially since it's freeware.:salute:

Yes, here its a problem - author of Yak confirmed this "this bug is in old ( FS9 ) .air file. There is nothing i can do with that for the moment.
To be fixed later, with some other FSX software" so dont touch a rudder in the air ;). The rest of model is great but right, its a beta version.

jetstreamsky
December 14th, 2012, 10:44
Good to know the author has a handle on it.

As for critising it, no rudder authority is not the same as inadequate authority due to the original aircraft design. I was trying to be polite by originally saying poor, given it is a beta product, however the performance is blatantly obviously deficient, that clearly some work is needed in this area.

While it's a shame that the newer beta isn't for FS9 (man, I'd love to get the ski version for dodging around the Adirondacks), I can attest to it being a wonderful low and slow bird... for those dithering about whether to download this and try it out - do it, you'll have a lot of fun.

My very first repaint(don't laugh too hard!). I decided that I wanted a "whitewash" look for the Ski-Yak over the stock green paint and wanted it to be a rather ugly field expedient white paint whitewash that could have been painted by a broom, or mop or other crude brush. Anyhow, I'm still tinkering with it before I decide on whether to release it or not.

Actually, while I'm not sure they would actually have a need to do that. . .the effect is pretty convincing. As you said, still tweaking it a bit, but it does have that look of a hastily painted aircraft. Pretty cool idea really.:applause:

Don't know what you've had to change, but perhaps there's a value that could have a minus sign in front of, alternatively the flyer could always flip the control sense in the control settings when flying this aircraft.

Well I hope you do release it:ernae:

I'd like to see a few more repaints for this model if anyone's up for it. Interestingly there are no alphas in any of the texture files so shine and transparency must be in the model. I wish we had a "Shine" utility for FsX so it could be matted down and add alphas to suit the scheme.

If you are using FSUIPC, you can easily make a plane specific profile and then reverse rudder when calibrating rudder axis.

Thanks everyone! I emailed Swingman to make sure it's okay to upload this paint simply because the base paint belongs to them and I just want to be on the safe side even though I'm sure they will be okay with it. I finished and packaged it so it's ready to go. I did get the exhaust stains evened out but decided not to drag them down past the cowling as if the whitewash was fairly fresh and the application was done around the cowling exhaust stains/burns and covered up on the fuselage past the cowling/fuselage joint. I also left the canopy frames green per personal taste and figuring that many field expedient paints probably avoided getting paint near the glazed areas. Anyhow, will hopefully get it uploaded very soon.

Remember too, and this may not be the case with this airplane, but many aircraft have been released as beta models . . .and remained that way because the developer either lost interest in completing it, or real world requirements caused him to shelf any future projects. :salute:

I'm using A F Scrubs' Yak-52 .air file with this one. I now have proper rudder authority (changed rudder effectiveness to 0.001 in .cfg). Still working out the kinks. But at least it works and the visual matches.
