Went to The Hague today, to visit the Louwman automotive museum for the first time after the recent move. I had a special reason to go now, because there's a special exhibit, organized together with the Mercedes-Benz museum.
On display are no less than six original, pre-WW2 Mercedes race cars, nicknamed 'silberpfeile' or silver arrows.

I was at the Mercedes museum at Stuttgart last month, hoping to see these as well. Didn't see them there, now I know where they are.
Did you also make a picture of our 'stolen' Farman?

This one..?
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a262/Ferror/Louwman_Den_Haag/IMG_3133.jpg
Below it are eight of the ten Spyker cars on display (Spyker being the 'Rolls-Royce of the continent' in the 1920's, and a famous Dutch manufacturer.). The museum owns fourteen of the last nineteen Spykers remaining..
This Dodge was built in November 1914, the same month that production started at Dodge. It's also one of the first cars of the collection, as it was bought in 1934 by the father of the current museum owner (The man in the background) who was , at the time, the importer for Dodge in the Netherlands. His son later switched to Toyota.
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a262/Ferror/Louwman_Den_Haag/IMG_3073.jpg
This is a Toyota AA, the first Toyota built, and the last example of an AA left in the world. Even the Toyota museum in Japan has to make do with a replica! This one was found in 2008 on a farm near Wladiwostok. It is the only pre-WW2 Toyota left:
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a262/Ferror/Louwman_Den_Haag/IMG_3477.jpg
This is a 1903 Napier 100-HP Gordon Bennett racing car, the first British racing car to wear green; a colour later made famous as 'British racing green':
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a262/Ferror/Louwman_Den_Haag/IMG_3138.jpg
'Just' a couple of Ferrari's..? The 275GTB is a rare lightweight version, the green one a custom made 500 superfast speziale, previous owner HRH Prince Berhard of the Netherlands, and the car on the left is a 166 Inter Coupé touring 'aerlux' from 1949, the ninth 166 built and one with quite a racing pedigree:

A Bugatti Type 54 Bachelier Roadster; it may look like a neat tourer, but underneath are the chassis and engine of the type 54 GP racer.. Only five were made of this type, two of which were lost in crashes:

Bugatti Type 57 'Grand raid' with a body by Gangloff:

1932 Bugatti Type 50T Coach profilée; one of only two ever built:

Mercedes-Benz 500K Spezial roadster, which interstingly didn't belong to a wealthy German, but was delivered to an insurance guy in London in 1936. He didn't drive it during the war though!:

The experimental, four-wheel drive March 240 Formula 1 car from 1976:

The 1903 Spyker 60-HP, the first car with a six-cylinder engine, four-wheel brakes and four-wheel drive!

All special and unique cars, mostly in their original state. This is just a small selection of the approximately 240 cars on display..... Not to mention the halls of automotive art, collectibles, throphies etc etc!

Yes, that's the Farman Ferry. Really sad to see it displayed that way. I don't think it was designed to be hung from the ceiling like that. I'm not sure if it will have a long life time this way. But the rest of the museum looks quit interesting, I think I should pay it a visit. Nice pictures.

Intersting thing about the Farman: it is the only replica in the museum! Wonder what happened to the Fokker F.K.43 (Based on the pre-war Koolhoven F.K.43, therefore also known as the 'Fokhoven'.) that was on display in the old museum..?

Great shots Ferry, next year the Porsche Museum's Rennsport exhibit will make its way to Raleigh, NC for an exhibition on style at the North Carolina Museum of Art (NCMA). Can't wait, we have so little of this in the US.

Ferry_v0 is that 4 wheel drive as in the back 4 wheels or front two wheels plus two of the rear?
I love the Mercedes I really wish I could have seen them race.

Dave: All four rear wheels are driven; at least when they'd finished it... When first shown the 4WD didn't even work.. It was tested a few times but never raced. Later it was sold to a guy that did a few hillclimbs with it.
Another race car, parked in the parking garage; surely you can name the driver!:

1937 Duesenberg Model J limousine that once belonged to 'Father divine':

1929 Mercedes SSK, likely the most original SSK in the world! When bought in 2004 the crankcase serial didn't match but the part was located on an SSK in the Mercedes museum and swapped:

Another silly car, this Fiat 1100 'boat-car' built for the Scuola Nautica Scarani (Nautical school) in Bologna. Doesn't float btw!

Cars with famous previous owners; this 1933 Mercedes type Nurburg 500 belonged to the former German Kaiser Wilhelm II, who spent his last years in exile in the Netherlands until his death in 1941:

A slightly better photo of that Farman:

In 1957, a Jaguar D-type won Le Mans, but after that race it crashed in a club race, and from the parts and a bunch of spares two 'original' D-types emerged. The museum tracked down both cars and restored the car back to it's original state:

Maserati 8C3000 from 1932; driven by former Bentley boy Henry 'Tim' Birkin in the 1933 Tripoli GP. During a pitstop he burns his arm on the exhaust, neglects the wound and finishes third, only to die of blood poisoning shortly after.. BTW Rowan Aktinson (Blackadder, Mr. Bean) once did a short movie about Birkin, called 'Full throttle'. Worth watching if you can find it..
