I posted here because most of you visit the same places I do and may have a handle on my problem. I manually update my copy of Windows XP SP-2 at the end of the month when Microsoft releases their updates. However, this month no matter what I try when I go to the MS Update site my browser IE 7 (latest version) directs me to the MS.com home page! Can't find the update page at all. Any help would be appreciated. Please note I haven't added or deleted any software in the last 90 days and it always worked until Jan 1 2009. (Late Y2K bug?):help:

Thanks, Paul

Possibly because you are missing "Microsoft Windows Genuine Advantage Tool"? There isn't a whole lot of advantage to it from what I see, but it does prevent you downloading updates if it is missing.

Nope; that gives me the dreaded "404" message. Since I made the original post I did find I have some spyware that slipped through AVG8 free. I found it with Spybot and got rid if it but the damage is done. Whenever I go to Windows Update I am redirected to the MSN homepage. You can see the redirection in front of your eyes. This insidious thing also prevents me from logging on several update sites such as Paint Shop Pro etc.
The solution will be to reload all my stuff on a new hard drive I had recently ordered from Newegg. Will start Friday.

Put Put...

Try running Panda for that virus..its free version will do wonders...

Then if you have a windows do a repair and that should fix your regestries...... If you have it...

Or..Once you get rid of the problem, try a system restore...

Just a thought..but ya...I understand about the new HDD too....

Paul....

Try this. Get the Opera browser at www.opera.com and load it up, go to MS and get your updates. Redownload IE7 to see if that helps.

Does sound like a virus though. Rotten jokers.. Send them to the chinese prisons!!!!

If IE7 doesn't help, go back to IE6. Or as Bill says, use Opera.

I had the same problem after reinstalling XPsp2 not long ago, couldn't automatically download any updates for SP2. I had to manually select and download them...all 113 of them. Reinstalled them and everything works fine again now. It could have something to do with MS not supporting XP any more...big push on for Vista.

BTW, I'd take Firefox or Opera over IE7 anytime.

Just to keep up to date in case it is of value to the next person with a similar problem. I ran the Windows repair from my Win XP SP-2 disk and it did change things. Now, when I try to go to Win update, it doesn't redirect me to MSN.con, but redirects me to Google! In fact if I try to access updates of any software I have, it redirects me to Google! I downloaded Opera and installed it as the chief honcho browser. Nice little program which I will explore in depth later. Unfortunately, when I click on Win update I still get redirected to Google. This is my last post from this HD as I have already installed a new 320 gig SATA Western Digital in the box and will start loading everything squeaky clean new on it shortly.

Cheers, Paul:woot:

Man Paul,

Sorry this has happened....

I vote that we take all virus creators and jail them in Chinese prisons... Perhaps 5 years there will teach them not to 'terrorize' us anymore...

Once you finish your new install if you update to SP3 you may still not be able to down load updates from MS.

It has some thing to do with a dll that never registers or gets unregistered when you load a fresh new install of XP and update it to SP3.

It happened to me a few months ago.

Ickie has the fix here.

I followed the instructions here and it fixed the problem.
