Just a head-up, I got it today. I had doubts about it because of a possible fps hit, but it is surprisingly very smooth on my older system. Catalina its self is worth the money, a great rendition of the island.

Do they model the smog? :kilroy:

I find the fps interesting, I have their San Fransisco and find it barely usable framerate wise, yet Manhattan and London are OK.

At one time or another I had ManhattenX and VegasX. Ny was a slide show and Vegas was just plain ugly imo. This is interesting but I rarely venture to the area unless its in a default fps freindly aircraft which is rarely. I usually end up flying helis but I am going to wait and see on this one.

I grabbed this on Friday, the models of the buildings are great, and it does make downtown LA look A LOT better.

The textures on the buildings mind you are a little funny, apparently it was described in the Manual about the fact to say cost they were textured using a 45 degree slant angle satellite photos, it did not say that in the marketing copy mind you! lol

However on the whole I think its great, if you fly around the SOCAL area and especially Los Angeles I would say it adds much to the area, plus you get to take off from the LAPD helipad and pretend you are James Farentino or Roy Schneider in Blue Thunder!! lol

A Heads up, it does not come with night textures if that is your thing.

My system is over three years old now also and it handles the scenery pretty well with sliders to the right.

Cheers,

I don't have San Fran X but I saw this post on the Aerosoft site that may be of use to you. Check out post #9 : http://forum.aerosoft.com/index.php?/topic/57630-aerosoft-uscitiesx-los-angeles/

On topic... I have been an LA resident for 22 years (some of which spent in fixed and rotary wing a/c over the basin) and I must say this scenery is very ambitious but amazing.

In the manual (which may be downloaded for free by anyone: http://www.aerosoft2.de/downloads/uscitiesx/Manual-US-Cities-X-Los-Angeles-Engl.pdf) there are some good tips for getting the most out of this scenery.

I am using it with BlueSky photoscenery set at a lower priority and I like the way it fills in the gaps in LA Cities X. Otherwise you would have Aerosoft photoscenery with FSX default in the gaps since LA-Cities X is not completely contiguous given the large geographical spread of the area covered. If you have any questions about coverage, check the Google Earth kmz before purchase. http://www.aerosoft2.de/downloads/uscitiesx/LosAngeles.kmz

Good to hear the positive comments; I still have 1 hour 3 minutes to go on the download!

The only problem I have is I can't find the Casino at Avalon on Catalina. The Catalina airport is very well done. Long Beach looks realistic. I will have to tweak per their instructions to get good frame rates every where. All in all I find it a good investment.

Best, Paul

It does look good, I am near you and I wish Torrance (KTOA) had some more realism but there again where do you stop with these things?

Such a good addition to flying in Los Angeles.

Rest assured the Casino is there right where it's supposed to be. I had a great screenshot of it but I deleted it yesterday.

Yes, after I tweaked according to the manual it is, indeed, there. Like Rob Barendregt is always telling me, "Read the manual, first, Paul".

I loaded it into Prepar3D, but it has some issues. Amazing scenery, especially the heart of LA.

My plane sunk through the pavement at the Avalon airport. When I saw they did Catalina Island, that was the clencher that made me buy it. I hope they get the P3D version running soon. Looks like some great flying ahead in the LA area.

Do they plan to do San Diego next?

I believe they are working on it: http://forum.aerosoft.com/index.php?/topic/53220-us-cities-x-la-topic-closed-product-released/page__st__160

Personally I am hoping for Boston at some point.

Looks awesome. The lack of night textures is an absolute no-go for me. Makes no sense at all unless you only fly during the day...which is something I can't comprehend...

Yep I had that problem too. It is an artifact due to circumventing FSX's requirement to have a perfectly flat runway. Apparently the same thing exists with Aerosoft's Lukla airport.

Here's what the FAQ's in the manual have to say about it:

"Q: How come the spot plane viewpoint is sometimes below ground at Catalina Airport?

A: To make the sloped runway possible we had to create landable 3D model of the airport’s terrain that is slightly above the actual terrain. Although you can land there, FSX’s viewpoint engine doesn’t see this as “actual” ground, so you will be able to watch your aircraft from below."

Not a deal breaker for me. If this is the trade-off, I'd rather have the arched rwy at Catalina so I could get used to the altered sight picture on final.

BTW I'm not a big airport aficionado, but I have Glenn Johnson's KSAN and it looks good to me.

Can anyone confirm that there are no issues when using this with MegaSceneryX SoCal and or MegaSceneryEarth California?

I agree - as much as fsx city lighting could be improved, not having
itat all is just unacceptable

I'm using it with Megascenery SoCal and have seen no issues yet. I've flown around Catalina and over the Hollywood Hills around downtown and out to Torrence so far.

Aerosoft have an American shop. You can choose the option by clicking the US Flag on home page.
I assume your bill will be charged in dollars.

Colin.
